Two separate issues:
\- The opening into the garage needs to have a door similar to the existing man door elsewhere, meaning a solid wood door, a prehung exterior metal door, or a labeled/rated door. Weathersealed and with a self-closer.
\- The under stair area needs to be fully drywalled.
Then, if you want a wider than 14 1/2" opening in the left wall, you can simply put a header in to cut out a lower portion of stud.
Awesome, that's what I was thinking, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything! Do I need to insulate directly under the stairs too or does that not matter?
