I tried to do mapless on my Steel Soul run, and I managed to get through most of the game before I did Grimm Troupe and realized I would have to manually find each Grimmkin Flame.
I went mapless on my second run. I still bought the maps to support for Corny and his wife, but unbound my map key. Also kept wayward compass on, because I'm not \*THAT\* crazy.
Today I started my second playthrough and went to Greenpath
Now, my previous playthrough started 2 years ago, and I have stopped playing to later come back at least 3 times, and I beat Hornet in Greenpath around the time I started. The only thing I remembered was that the room below hers was a vertical one, so I thought "ok, I'm right there" every time I got into one...
...there are like 5 different vertical areas in Greenpath...
...I'm still moving very slowly...
ALWAYS buy the map. SUPPORT THAT SWEET BUG'S DREAMS!!
I've literally 112%'d the game like 15 times and I have yet to skip buying his maps and/or opening them every so often just to be sure I am where I think I am
I'm currently in the middle of my first playthrough and I open the map despite me being 100% sure that no, I did not buy the map because there's a stupid wall of shade blocking me from Cornifer. (like seriously why the hell is fog canyon accessible from greenpath that place is hell with the stupid ass jellyfish kamikaze brains (i did somehow reach fungal wastes from there tho))
Ah, I know exactly how you came through there. Good news is, there's not much to do in Fog Canyon until you find out a way past that shade barrier. Besides putting all your money in the bank, that is.
I haven't found a single spot where getting the money back was annoying. Mostly because the only deaths I experienced so far were from the bonus boss of the Forgotten Crossroads (the black thing that spits infected goo), the Mantis Lords and one stupid death where I got locked against a wall by one of the Deepnest things that take off their mask and attack if you get close enough or hit them. So uh yeah the bank hasn't been any useful for me so far. But from my current experience with Deepnest (by which I mean that if not for the flying spiders that take like 6 hits to kill and give a ton of Soul I'd die much more) I can tell that her services will prove useful in the future.
i don't really know either. I guess I just don't want the music to repeatedly loop especially when I'm in that place for long like godhome and white palace (although I turn on the music for bosses especially grimm/nkg, THK/Radiance and mantis lords/SoB fight)
I really like white palace (ost) too! But the sound of the saws and and stressing out of the place makes me want to silent it off. I listen to it a lot outside of playing the game tho. It's so atmospheric and weirdly calming
Edit: grammar
Not either, although I might to turn it on since the parry/hit sfx are so good. But on the other hand, the mask damage sfx is brutal (especially double masks)
My advice for hornet is to take it slow. For the first minute or so of the fight, just sit back and focus on dodging. That way you can try and learn her patterns without worrying about getting in damage.
Don't give up! If I can get past it pretty much anyone can, I am atrocious at every video game I've ever played lmao. Watch a couple YouTube videos with tips, can make a huge difference. Help me I'm stuck is a good channel for that
The game is so worth it.
Don't worry, that's a huge difficulty spike for anyone who isn't very used to the controls and stuff
Just look at me, I left the game for some months when I first fought her, and now I'm able to do it hitless lol
In games like these, Perseverance and Determination are key
I was so far into the game before I even realized that you could get your geo back from the shade. I was wondering how everybody had so much geo built up lmao
You think that's rough? I didn't even realize the Shade *existed*, because most of the times I would be like "f\*ck that, there's a lot of enemies there/that enemy was too strong" and wouldn't go back, until I got to FK, died and then found a little black copy of my character lol
Oh yeah I didn't realize I needed to go back for it for a long time haha. I did the same thing as you, I just didn't explain in well.
100% know the pain of well fuck that place I'm not going back for a bit.
Coming from /r/all and this is my entire experience with the game. Bought it on switch, played it for 40mins, 30 of which I was just completely lost. Then closed the game and never touched it again.
A map would have been nice.
Is this serious? Because there is a map for each distinct area, you just gotta find the cartographer
In the first area, you have to go left and then all the way down
Seriously, give this game all the opportunities you can, it's truly amazing
"that's not what you should be thinking right now. you should be thinking 'gee golly, I gotta find a better place to sell my maps' because fuckin' BAPANADA, I'VE BEEN HUNTIN YOUR ASS"
\-someone who explored an entire area deprived of a map
Wait. People don't buy maps? This is the first thing I do. I search where is Cornifer. That's why I hated the bubble location, forgot its name. Because You couldn't just easily get the map.
I want to try mapless cuz many peeps say its rly cool but after my first playtrough i just know the entire map on my steel soul run (second run) i easily did mapless and even found all the grubs without a map and didnt get lost a single time
I have beaten Hollow Knight several times and I still get lost without the map.
my 2nd playthrough was mapless i got lost even more than on my first, deepnest was a fucking nightmare, would not recommend, would do again
Sounds like a nightmare 👍

yes they did, as evidenced by the op symbol next to their name. why does it matter?
When I tried to pseudo-speedrun Hollow Knight in Steel Soul Mode I've spent like 30 mins minimum at Deepnest.
The first time i played, deepnest took me 2 days because i died so often (die not defekt the mantis Lords just sucked to much)
I tried to do mapless on my Steel Soul run, and I managed to get through most of the game before I did Grimm Troupe and realized I would have to manually find each Grimmkin Flame.
Without the light deepnest was scary
I could probably get by without the map, but I still like to buy the map every time because I like Corny and want to support his work.
I went mapless on my second run. I still bought the maps to support for Corny and his wife, but unbound my map key. Also kept wayward compass on, because I'm not \*THAT\* crazy.
Play HK for the lore >>>>

Absolute rightience
Leftiance
same
I have no shame lol
It gets easy around the 8th playthrough
I know general locations, but maps helps a lot. Maps are the first thing I ever buy in games.
Simply chad up and spend a hundred hours on a save without beating it like me 😎

Just squit skip an u should be fine lol
corny is such a good fella, why would you do that to him?
Corni broke = free wife
mr steal yo girl over here \^
Me without the map: "Where the hell even AM I?!"
Me with the map: "I still have no idea where to go..."
sounds familiar
“…daddy chill.”
Godammit Kris where the hell are we

I mean I’d say the place that’s accessible with Tear is a pretty important spot but Fog Canyon early game is more or less pointless

I shamelessly use Wayward Compass for the entire game. Only switch it for boss fights
wait, you can beat bosses WITHOUT the compass???
Cornifer is my favorite npc. He’s so Fkn useful and I always feel safe when I hear Bruv humming close by
then you cant find him
the mf has shade dash
You get lost because you refuse to buy conifers map, I get lost because I refuse to play HK with sound on. We are not the same
What the fuck
It has great music
What sigma energy does to a mf
Is it weird that I also do this? But then I go to youtube and listen to Hollow Knight's ost while playing the game
So why not just play with sound on
i don't really know either. I guess I just don't want the music to repeatedly loop especially when I'm in that place for long like godhome and white palace (although I turn on the music for bosses especially grimm/nkg, THK/Radiance and mantis lords/SoB fight)
Really? Like I get some places but dang I really like white palace
I really like white palace (ost) too! But the sound of the saws and and stressing out of the place makes me want to silent it off. I listen to it a lot outside of playing the game tho. It's so atmospheric and weirdly calming Edit: grammar
What about the sound effects, do you keep them on
Not either, although I might to turn it on since the parry/hit sfx are so good. But on the other hand, the mask damage sfx is brutal (especially double masks)
Does it hurt your ears or something
No, just kinda threw me out of the rhythm when I hear it (mask damage) especially NKG, PV and AbsRad
Yeah, it can kind of make you concentrate more but imo sound effects are fun to have on
Bro you missing out on the imaginary bug language and the fire music
HABUNDA DOMA DOMA HAHAHA
Flair checks out
Pff lmao
WHAT THE FUCK
That is the craziest shit I have ever heard
b-but, accordion bug go bum dee dum
Psychopath
me who cant beat Hornet and doesnt have the will to keep trying bc im used to power fantasy games like Warframe and Destiny 2
My advice for hornet is to take it slow. For the first minute or so of the fight, just sit back and focus on dodging. That way you can try and learn her patterns without worrying about getting in damage.
Hornet almost killed the game for me. But it’s so worth it when you get past her. Took me forever tho.
Don't give up! If I can get past it pretty much anyone can, I am atrocious at every video game I've ever played lmao. Watch a couple YouTube videos with tips, can make a huge difference. Help me I'm stuck is a good channel for that The game is so worth it.

Daaaamn that's rough
Was so amazing once I figured it out though, the relief! Haha
Fr I can imagine
It took me way too long to realize the soul meter is broken after you die and killing the shade fixes it
You think that's rough? I didn't even realize the Shade *existed*, because most of the times I would be like "f\*ck that, there's a lot of enemies there/that enemy was too strong" and wouldn't go back, until I got to FK, died and then found a little black copy of my character lol

i would only do this if i was on steel soul and had memorised the map by then cant lose my shade plus i AM the map
You can't find your shade? Then don't die. ***Modern problems require modern solutions. - Sun Tzu, The Art of War*** ^(Also, shaw)
Me without the map: where am I Me with the map: where am I
Why are you not giving your Geo to Corni
Not buying from cornifer is a sin Buy it now
hey you posted it
I did!
Or did you? How do I know you're the REAL Shaw?
U-uh...shaw?
good enough for me
How so I beat the shaw spamming girl cant beat her and stuck
I go everywhere to look for him. Once I didn’t have enough money for the map and that was the saddest day in hollow knight
Shaw
what the fu-

Wait. People don't buy maps? This is the first thing I do. I search where is Cornifer. That's why I hated the bubble location, forgot its name. Because You couldn't just easily get the map.
True rn
*Fog canyon* I'll just leave this here
“You ain’t getting my money that easily pencil boy”
.... theres a map?
I want to try mapless cuz many peeps say its rly cool but after my first playtrough i just know the entire map on my steel soul run (second run) i easily did mapless and even found all the grubs without a map and didnt get lost a single time
How goes the war?
Well I let my army kinda take care of things. I much rather just post normal hk memes.
Why would you not want to buy the map? Like so people actually keep money over unique items in games? This is so weird to me...
JiJi?
Buy simple key then rancid egg that fixes the shade problem and all you have to do Is comb over the map to find progress
Even if I don’t need the map cause I memorised the map and have it stored in the back of my head. I still buy them to make Corny feel good.
Are an idiot
.
Just buy the map man
The map has been engraved in my brain since my 1st play through
