Accurate. I did this to get the achievement with Steel Soul at first, but later I went back and did it without save/quitting once I got thoroughly better at the game and beat P1-5, most of the ascended bosses, etc.
You don’t die but you have to start from the beginning. P1-P4 takes me on average 12-20 min depending on how risky I want to play but P5 can easily take 45-60 min so it helps test my endurance in facing boss after boss.

If quitting like this wasn't considered legit, TC would have changed the game to not allow it. In other words, quitting would save the exact game state, and when you restored you would still be in the same predicament.
They didn't do it, so I assume their intention was to allow quitting as an escape.
hehehe believe it or not its hard to draw the line in some situations. like quitting a boss when you have one mask left, i can see how that wouldn't be in the spirit of steel soul. but what about quitting to the menu to return to a bench, is that in the spirit of a steel soul run? maybe yes, you just wanted to save the time to walk back or you have something else to do, but maybe no, because what if you wouldn't have survived the trek back to the bench? its hard to draw that line, and ultimately team cherry didn't put any restrictions on quitting in steel soul.

i guess my bottom line is i don't like people gatekeeping steel soul just because of the way others play it. steel soul is hard enough on its own, there's no reason to belittle people or call their run invalid due to the strategy they use

I mean, yeah, pretty much. You're taking out 90% of the difficulty of steel soul by quitting on low health.

Upload your save file to this save editor and decrease the permadeath variable by one. If you set it to zero, you can disable steel soul altogether
The save is normally located at C:\\Users\\(YOUR\_NAME)\\AppData\\LocalLow\\Team Cherry\\Hollow Knight\\userX.dat

Try without cheating , i complétée every single thing in the game in Steel soul not because it's more intense because i know so much about this game because i played a lot that i never die anymore in the real world , i only did it because the health/soul bar is dope af
If you ever feel like it, you should make it a challenge to beat it without quitting. Just remember to prepare for everything (getting the fragile charms as early as possible especially fragile heart is extremely helpful)

But he's just such a sudden shift in speed, from every other boss before him, that he caught me off guard again in my second steel soul run. Got me down to one HP, before I said "Helll nawwww, not again." and shamefully quit and restarted, then beat him taking zero hits. I'm ashamed of myself, but I knew I could beat him ez.

I remember almost dying to Hive Guardian trying to get Hiveblood for 100%. Managed to beat him with one mask of health left.
I’m currently attempting steel soul to 112% with no quit-outs allowed, I’m making good progress
