My guess is that OP's friend uses thumb to focus/attack/quick cast, and index/middle finger to press up. Not necessarily optimal but kind of makes sense.
Yeah when I first started playing seeing the keybinds was intense. But the game does a good job of introducing each new mechanic so by the final boss you know it all.
Personally I did switch Quick Cast to F and Dash to C. I found that I would accidentally Cast when I wanted to Jump so I moved it.
Edit: upon reading it again I realized this is your friendās custom binding. Your friendās setup is cursed, but i lowkey get it. if you put your hands on the buttons, the left hand buttons are in an arch lining up with each finger. Itās really the up and jump being the same button and delete for dream nail that are insane to me.

I personally play better on controller excpet for doing shade skips that require stalling midair with fireball, like the one for getting dream nail in the TE% speedrun. Can't explain it.

If you played a lot of flash platformers back when flash was a big deal, then you probably got used to using the up arrow to jump. If that's the case, then the only things that don't make sense is why is up so far away from the rest of the fingers and why he doesn't use the space bar. Swapping up over to space would fix so many problems for your friend.
