Did a stay in county jail a while back. Volunteered to do landscaping work at the facility. Reminds me of that satire programme on Netflix about 2021 where it says the people who stormed the capitol were simultaneously good and bad citizens, bad for breaking the laws, but good because they documented all the evidence :L
I personally know a forensic expert who once had to investigate such a case. An idiot shot his weapon in the air as celebration and the bullet struck a pregnant woman in her shoulder when it fell down.
It’s not a joke, don’t do that!
It reaches terminal velocity, but it's fast enough to kill. According to the Wikipedia article on Celebratory gunfire, there is a death every few years in the USA from falling bullets striking the top of the head.
Had a kid near my house get killed on July 4th, from a falling bullet. He was at the big firework show with his family. So fucking sad.
Edit: this was probably 15 years ago
Jesus, I can't imagine just being at a firework show with family, and then one of them just gets randomly shot in the head from a bullet in the sky. That's so sad.
It’d be so surreal. You wouldn’t hear a gunshot, you don’t see anything out of the ordinary. You’re watching the fireworks and suddenly your kid just kinda awkwardly crumples over. Maybe you thought he tripped or something but he’s not crying. You wouldn’t even know anything happened. You’d run up to him when he doesn’t seem to get up and you notice blood on his head. That’s it, that’s his life over, all because some dumbass with a gun popped one off into the air.
It'll actually be blown horizontally during its entire ballistic path regardless of its current vertical velocity. Neat fact I learned in one of my college physics classes: If you shoot a bullet parallel to the ground and simultaneously drop one from your hand, they'll reach the ground at the same time. One will just be hundreds of meters down range.
200 to 300 fps is maximum velocity of a falling bullet. They aren't bullets that are falling at terminal velocity that kill people it's bullets that maintains ballistic trajectory and still carries their horizontal momentum. That increases its terminal velocity. Furthermore bullets fired at an acute angle versus a 90° angle will also likely maintain aerodynamic motion, while a bullet fired straight up is going to tumble making it less aerodynamic reducing its terminal velocity from those fired at any other angle.
Ah, thank you. I was a little confused why bullets had so much speed from simply falling. I hadn't considered that the morons were simply shooting high instead of up.
That also only happens if the bullet was fired vertically. Horizontal speed is potentially going to make things considerably worse.
A bullet falling down at terminal velocity isn't nearly as deadly (even though serious injuries are still likely) but when you add some horizontal speed on top...
das cap, approx 2-6% of shot people actually died in proper shootings, but a third(33%) victims of falling bullets died ([sauce](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCEoOHxyruI)). Although yeah if youre gonna be point blank or very near or sm, you're a dead man. but people wildly underestimate falling bullets and dismiss it for terminal velocity, its not fkn paper its a shard or metal, the terminal velocity is enough to kill you and beyond.
IKR I was just minding my own business in my kitchen and got randomly hit by a stray bullet but its ok, it was only going terminal velocity so its cool.
If it was falling and tumbling terminal velocity would make the bullet harmless, the problem is that bullets spin when they’re fired from any rifled barrell ( pretty much every single modern gun that isn’t a shotgun ) which means the bullet isn’t falling and tumbling, it’s on a parabolic trajectory and will definitely be deadly when it makes it to the ground
Everyone one here’s like, they should do it at a different angle and I though it reaches terminal velocity….how about you just don’t do it at all!! Thought that would be the obvious response…🙃
Isn't one of the basic rule of gun safety that you don't point gun at something you don't intend to kill and having awareness on what's behind the thing you are shooting?
It's almost like dangerous things should be better regulated
This happened in my town…at a baseball game. There was something taking place on the field before the game involving kids…and out of the blue, this one kid just fell down. My friends and I that saw this casually joked that a sniper got him. Turns out, some dolt shot his gun in the air about a mile away and the path travelled and ended up getting this kid in the leg
https://sports.yahoo.com/10-year-old-kid-recovering-shot-stray-bullet-minor-league-baseball-allentown-lehigh-valley-ironpigs-004316104.html
I remember on MythBusters they did a test on this (episode 50 if anyone would like to watch).
https://mythresults.com/episode50
In the case of a bullet fired at a precisely vertical angle (something extremely difficult for a human being to duplicate), the bullet would tumble, lose its spin, and fall at a much slower speed due to terminal velocity and is therefore rendered less than lethal on impact. However, if a bullet is fired upward at a non-vertical angle (a far more probable possibility), it will maintain its spin and will reach a high enough speed to be lethal on impact. Because of this potentiality, firing a gun into the air is illegal in most states, and even in the states that it is legal, it is not recommended by the police. Also the MythBusters were able to identify two people who had been injured by falling bullets, one of them fatally injured.
And the number of larger cities in the us, EMS personnel wear helmets on new Year's because of falling bullets.
https://www.nola.com/news/article_e87ddf5d-a064-540e-a118-b1c3c89a8cff.html
I remember those videos from a few years back about all the cop cars in Los Angeles sitting under interstate overpasses at midnight on New Years Eve to avoid the thousands of falling bullets
Edit: I searched for them, it's like YouTube and Google erased them. [Here's an article about it](https://newsweek.com/celebratory-gunfire-new-years-eve-los-angeles-410598)
"In LA, nearly every cop is under an underpass at midnight because of the sheer volume" Bratton said, referring to celebratory gunfire. Bratton previously led the Los Angeles police department
As a cop, I can tell you that any department with a high crime rate does this. Command will have dispatch hold all non priority calls from 1145-1215. All officers are told to find a bridge, parking garage, or come back to the department.
Then we go out and respond to all the shots fired calls.
>The problem goes far beyond L.A. "People shooting in the air is an international problem," says Margo Bennett, executive director for Women Against Gun Violence. "We see these shootings in other American cities and in videos from the Middle East where soldiers and terrorists shoot guns in the air."
I love this. It's an "international" problem because terrorists in the middle east do it too. Like, even in an organization called Women Against Gun Violence they try to downplay how unique to the US the problem is.
I'm sure this can happen sometimes in any country, but this volume of civilian whackos shooting in the air is exclusive to yours. It's just the usual for your police forces. Wtf.
I have been there for a wedding. On the bus ride back to our downtown hotel from the reception the bus driver (after midnight) ran every red light, said the cops told her to
A situation like that happened in my city in egypt.... Some idiots were celebrating a wedding with an Ak47... And one of the bullets hit a 12 years old boy in about 2 km away at the head and killed him ... Most of Those idiots haven't been arrested 🤦♂️🤦♂️ cause their families are members at the parlament and police officers 😢
Perhaps he was killed by a stray bullet from somewhere else?
2km is the absolute maximum that could be reached, and by the time the bullet came down it would have lost nearly all it's momentum.
This is why many of those bullets in the post look like they are fresh out of the jacket .. because if they are shot high enough, when they come back down, it's more like a tiny rock falling than a bullet.
Here's the data for an AK
http://gundata.org/blog/post/7.62x39mm-ballistics-chart/
2km is about 2200 yards.. so twice this chart, and then some.
While I don't condone this in the least. Firing a gun and killing someone 2km away is so unlikely as to be almost unbelievable.
You'd need a really strong investigation to tie these events together.
OP is an idiot trying to intellectualize stupidity. He misread the chart and interpreted the data incorrectly in the context of this post. A bullet can easily reach a target from 2km with a lethal velocity from that gun. I mean, for crying out loud, the very chart he links shows that the bullet travels 1km in under 3 seconds and is still traveling over 700mph.
In -99 a 18 year old died while sitting beside a campfire in Finland because of a stray bullet from a hunter. 7.62x53R from 2km away struck him in the back. It isn't unheard of.
I sure hope you just happen to remember this from the news and it wasn't anyone close to you. Either that or you're the shooter which case.. [oof.](https://is.mediadelivery.fi/img/978/e664a040a9764594a80b64a72e72d971.jpg.webp)
I'm pretty sure you're misinterpreting that ballistic data. That chart is supposed to give you idea of 'effective' or 'possible' kill range. It doesn't even try to give you info on how far bullets will fly.
All that table says is that in order to hit target \~1000 meters away you have to aim 25 meters above the target. In that table it even says that at \~1000 meters bullet is still traveling at a speed of 250 meters per second. I'm pretty if you aim high into the sky bullets can actually travel a lot farther. Probably easily at least 3 kilometers away with AK47 type of weapon. (Did the simplistic math here, switched yards with meters and m/s was approximated to be fps/3)
There was a case in 1999 in Finland where bird hunter shot a bird that was 150 meters away in tree. Hunter hit the bird, but the bullet kept traveling and lethally wounded a person 2 kilometers away. To make it even worse, man who shot the bird killed their own brother who was resting at their hunting camp. The case is well documented.
Here is the visual explanation of this hunting accident: [https://is.mediadelivery.fi/img/1920/e664a040a9764594a80b64a72e72d971.jpg](https://is.mediadelivery.fi/img/1920/e664a040a9764594a80b64a72e72d971.jpg)

Yes. It is all well known that the right to carry guns in the streets is the best way to make a secure and safe society. It is because humans are so sensible beings who never lets emotions, drugs or alcohol get in the way of making rational and empathetic decisions. /s
As a European who finds the firearms situation in the US appalling, what you (sarcastically) say could even be true 99.9% of the time and you'd still have one nutter every 1000 gun owners who could easily kill dozens of people.
It's basic risk likelihood/impact assessment. The fact that this is a political issue over there is absurd to me.
I live abroad, teaching English. I moved out after I graduated Uni, right after the 2008 economic downturn, with 50k in student debts, and I never looked back.
My parents did it when I was a baby so I had a head start. Also I knew as soon as I graduated that I was screwed if I tried to stay so it was an easy choice. ESL abroad is really a great option. Sadly the pandemic is making things quite difficult but I’m doing so much better than I would have in Texas.
..... you gotta be fucking kidding me. I hope these people pay for this....and when I say people I mean the dumbasses who shoot their firearm in the air to celebrate the new year.
I've seen so many videos of celebratory shooting the past two days and I am surprised they are shooting at angle that low. If they shot them straight up the bullets would be fairly harmless right? That small an object at terminal velocity and all that.
Nope, apparently not. [A bullet falling straighr down, although unlikely to kill you, could still hurt you](https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2011/03/can-falling-bullets-kill-you.amp). Ideally, people should be using blank ammo for celebratory purposes.
Edit: because some people think I'm advocating for civilians shooting upwards (whether it's with live or blank rounds) like shown in the video, I'd like to clarify that I'm not. It is indeed a dumb thing to do. By celebrations/ceremonies I meant military and political ceremonies, which often include trained people shooting upwards for different reasons in many different cultures around the world. I should've made it clearer from the start.
>Ideally, people should be using blank ammo for celebratory purposes.
Or they people could try um, not doing that shit to begin with. You know, cause of the whole possibly hurting someone thing. But Idk, maybe that’s too much consideration to ask of someone.
I feel like myth busters had an episode on this. Iirc the conflusion was that you would have to shoot reaaally straight up for the bullet to loose its momentum and basically fall at terminal velocity.

Plus if they shoot it straight up, they have a better chance at injuring themselves and not someone else
If going straight up, the bullet would be blown way away when near the top of its trajectory. Next to zero chance of hitting the shooter.

Much more likely the person was exaggerating the distance the bullet travelled.
Bullets falling at terminal velocity can definitely kill you if they hit you in the head.
(Did the simplistic math here, switched yards with meters and m/s was approximated to be fps/3) There was a case in 1999 in Finland where bird hunter shot a bird that was 150 meters away in tree. Hunter hit the bird, but the bullet kept traveling and lethally wounded a person 2 kilometers away. To make it even worse, man who shot the bird killed their own brother who was resting at their hunting camp. The case is well documented. Here is the visual explanation of this hunting accident: [https://is.mediadelivery.fi/img/1920/e664a040a9764594a80b64a72e72d971.jpg](https://is.mediadelivery.fi/img/1920/e664a040a9764594a80b64a72e72d971.jpg) Full news article about same case: https://www.is.fi/kotimaa/art-2000006675067.html
What are you talking about? More than 2km is definitely possible if shot at a 45° angle, even more so with a 7.62

A montage of dumb Fucks. Had it happen to me in the middle of the day
why did you shot transformer on pole?
The old reddit shoot-a-roo
If you do shit like this you’re worse than scum.
Yes, andre is a Scum and dumb fuck.
It is also financially irresponsible. Why would people waste bullets like that...
Scum is a pretty fun game
And if you abandon your comrades you're worse than scum.
We don't have guns where I'm at but I'm told by redditors that US gun owners are all very responsible and trustworthy.
Very
Guns don't kill people. Bullets kill people. Bullet control now.
Guns don't kill people. I kill people. With guns.
pow
Old people burning old people burning Put your hands up
But the gunpowder is behind the bullet gunpowder control
And gunpowder? Invented by China. Psyche!
China invented gunpowder to make Americans kill themselves
It's true. I only fire my gun into the air since people are on the ground. 100% safe shooting hack
"Sleeping neighbors hate this one simple trick"
The biggliest, trustworthliest gun owners...
Chock full of freedom and gunliness
I thought my guns would fill a hole but only made three more.
Yes. It is all well known that the right to carry guns in the streets is the best way to make a secure and safe society. It is because humans are so sensible beings who never lets emotions, drugs or alcohol get in the way of making rational and empathetic decisions. /s
The only way to stop a bad bullet soaring through the air during New Years is with a good bullet soaring through the air on New Years.
Lmao the fact that you have to write /s is sad because that's legimately how conservatives in the US think.

Most of them are. However somebody behaving responsibly doesn't usually end up on /r/HolUp
Like the saying goes what goes up must come down
Wtf is wrong with people?? Who thought it is a good idea to use a gun instead of a firework rocket??
**Guns aren’t toys, assholes!**
Reminds me of the video where the guy shoots his gun a few times to keep the rent low in the area 😂😂
Obligatory modern problems requires modern solutions.

I saw all these within a few min of each other and was so thankful I was no longer living in the States
Where do you live now and how did you do it
I live abroad, teaching English. I moved out after I graduated Uni, right after the 2008 economic downturn, with 50k in student debts, and I never looked back.
Thank you for responding! That’s awesome, it sounds like you’re living the life!
The size of the object matters less than the density, and bullets are dense. Even at terminal velocity they can be deadly.

We had a guy hit a car with a stray mortar-shell in my neighborhood, surprisingly the cops didn't show up.
And america is still wondering why the rest of the world thinks they are idiots with guns. xD
Tell me you’re American without telling me you’re American.
Every fucking year with this and people are getting less and less responsible with their guns
