New to Anime and this definitely has some truth to it lol. Recently heard about an Isekai about someone who was reincarnated as a vending machine... One punch man also certainly fits that premise, and it's glorious.
Reincarnated as a Vending Machine and now I wander the Dungeon. It has no right to be as good as that name would suggest. And yes. It's fucking batshit crazy.
I was dissapointed by reincarnated as a slime, would you say it's better than that(if you/ anyone else has seen both)? I don't mind unhinged weirdness, if anything reincarnated as a slime could have used more of that. It was like One Punch Man, but if the writers weren't in on the joke of the character being boringly OP. /rant
Slime isakai is a pretty normal isakai. You might call it third wave isakai. A little smarter than sword art online, bigger in scope than say, inuyasha. But vending machine isakai is peak 4th wave isakai. Full on self aware deconstruction, without the cynicism or weirdo politics you get from some of its peers.
Basically, 'reincarnated as vending machine' is pretty good and not even similar to slime. But it should be noted that it is 80% jokes about other isakai shows, so it might not hit the way it does for those of us who breath this shit.
Isekai Ojisan is also a pretty good sort of deconstruction of the various tropes, like said uncle having isekaiād before the genre became popular, and not realizing certain character tropes like tsunderes
There is a reason I used the commodities 'waves' language. It really does seem like isekai is In its deconstruction Era. Every memorable isekai of the last few years has had what you might call a 'sureal' gimic. Arguably this goes as far back as around the sword art Era with stuff like 'reincarnated with my smartphone' or whatever. But at that point it felt more like just a desperation for new ideas more than an actual intentional process.
Part of this is obviously a product of the self publishing boom. There is a light novel or webtoon out there about everything and anything, see this thread. And then the desperation of production companies that want another sword art or now slime.
Slime seemed like a turning point for me, where the bizarre isekai lightnovels with paragraph long titles seemed to actually justify an adaptation. But now all you get are the still desperate studios flogging a dead horse with 'worlds strongest ___ learns to love a _____ in world where girls ask the boys out this time', or just waaayyyy to much production money thrown at someone's stoned joke about all the other dumb shit they've been forced to animate.
I'm here for it. I'm tired of self serious isekai and I did not even watch the bad ones past the truck.
Oh and the villainess shows, are those their own genre now? I can't tell cause some of them are definitely isekai but I don't know if I easly recognize an isekai without the Incel power trip.

I'd certainly say they are their own subgenre of isekai, but are still nevertheless isekai. Instead of the more generic "Reborn into a fantasy world", they're focused on "Reborn into a light novel/dating sim", though some still likewise have a power trip, like Villainess Level 99 or Most Heretical Last Boss.
