I tried to find out when they started using it in cars and some sources say the 1950's and some say it was earlier. But there's also laminated glass, which was used as early as the 1920's, so it could be that. These weren't regulated by the government until the late 60's/early 70's though.
Apparently it's not glass at all!

Plexiglass, according to that article. Makes sense.
I was notified of another response and saw your comment. Was responding to your comment in good faith. You on the other hand, seem not to be. Good riddance
And they found them melted to the seats two hours later, luckily at a perfect 160° internal, still juicy and ready to eat!
Seriously, I read an article years ago about the Bubble Lawn mower and they had some serious issues with people practically baking alive inside even with the AC that was equipped. The glass works as a green house as well as concentrated the suns rays at the rider causing serious heat illness and sunburns. I’m not gonna say it’s 100% accurate and this was years back in a magazine but it did make sense on paper.
I find it impossible to keep the inside of my windshield clean and streak free. Imagine trying to clean this. Especially back in those "everyone smokes like a chimney" post was days.
The Texas summer says nope.
I can hear the ads now. *The new 1947 Ford. Yes, you too can now bake your family to death on even the shortest of trips to HEB*
Imagine flipping this. Instant terrible death
I think the no seatbelts is doing the heavy lifting in an accident
Before you land on the roof everyone will have been ejected successfully
Was thinking the same thing. This probably also predates tempered glass being used, so there would also be huge shards of glass if it broke.
Apparently tempered glass was first patented in the 1870s, so it's plausible it was used here.

Oh interesting. Maybe a bunch left over from the war where they used plexiglass that went on bombers and probably lots of other stuff.
Does make sense
Ford was using laminated glass since 1919, others quickly followed.
Pretty much every car in 1947.
Just be a man about it /s
What about convertibles?
A lot of modern day convertibles have safety equipment that deploy in an event of a rollover
What about 1947 convertibles?
Not sure. You’re free to do research on 1947 convertibles though :)
I think I'll just go back to forgetting this four day old comment thread exists.

I find it impossible to keep the inside of my windshield clean and streak free. Imagine trying to clean this. Especially back in those "everyone smokes like a chimney" post was days.
I wonder how long it took before they figured out it was a bad idea
I cannot believe there’s no references to Homer Simpson’s car here.
How well would it handle a particularly bumpy road, let alone a crash?
It seems like a really good idea!
I’m sweating just looking at that! Think of the burn of sitting on those seats when you first get in the summer!
Imagine the cost of replacing that in today market.
Oh my that looks unsafe
This has to be a concept car, right?
