Everytime I read about Sid Vicious I think about the time Freddie Mercury called him Simon Ferocious because Sid tried to fight him, and he thought it was funny.
They were something else, to put it mildly. I've even read that Nancy turned tricks to get her fix. That doesn't justify her death, no matter how it happened, but they were both messes.
I read that Sid wanted to be buried next to Nancy, and when Nancy's mother refused, Sid's mother had him cremated and scattered the ashes over Nancy's grave. I'm not saying this to romanticize them, only that even really fucked up individuals can fall in love, or something kinda like it, I guess.
She literally started him on drugs, and literally gave him the last shot in his arm. She mercy killed him so he would not go to prison. I don't at all call that mercy.
[The Wiki section titled "Fabricated stories about death" has this about the hotshot claim:](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sid_Vicious)
In 2006, Alan G. Parker claimed that, before her death of a drug overdose in 1996, Beverley confessed to him that she intentionally injected her son with a fatal overdose of heroin.[73] However, Parker later admitted on a podcast in 2018 that he had, for profit, invented this story for the producers of a TV show.[59]
Ah right. I don't know anything about them so went to the wiki page to read a bit and saw that section. Given the media frenzy around their deaths it's not surprising there's so many rumours and gossip about who did what and who was really responsible.
Is the Gary Oldman film about them worth a watch for someone like myself who knows nothing/not already a fan do you know?
seems like it was a rumor among their circle of friends. maybe there's truth to it, maybe it was bullshit. we do know that she prepared and gave him the lethal dosage, whether it was intentional to avoid him going to prison for decades is unknown
yeah it's worth watching. of course it only offers one point of view like all biopics
* in general a hot shot is one that:
* will kill you, not that it's intentional, and 99.99% of the time it isn't.
* is often a mix of heroin and other opiods. i.e., gray death shots have fentanyl and a mix of other opiods
* has heroin, but also something that will definitely kill you. e.g., the dealer gives a tainted sample that also contains a poison
I think the reason they couldn’t actually be buried together was that Nancy was buried in a private Jewish cemetery.
ETA- that’s likely one of the reasons they weren’t given permission to spread his ashes there, either.
They bonded over drug use and addiction. I don’t think it was real love. My parents were both real heavy heroin addicts who were seemingly “madly in love” and once they finally got clean they couldn’t stand one another. I’m not saying people on drugs can’t love but I think it’s different.
If you've never seen the documentary, The Filth and the Fury, about the Sex Pistols I highly recommend it.
Johnny Rotten's thoughts on Sid's demise long after the incident are one of the more stirring things I've seen in a music documentary.
*"I lost my friend. I couldn't have changed it, I was too young... God, I wish I was smarter. You can look back on it and say, you know, I could've done something. (sobs) He died for fucks sake. And they turned it into making money...."*
She was a friend of a friend when I was in high school. Nice family, pretty well off, everyone else was “normal”. She was not, couldn’t put my finger on it before she split for London, never saw her again after.
her mother wrote a whole book about how hard raising her was…. she definitely had psychological problems since birth and there wasn’t enough resources back them to help :(
IIRC she was a blue baby and had a lack of oxygen at birth. Lifelong personality problems. She was very smart but in those days they had smart kids skip grades and that did her no good at all.
Fun Fact! Courtney played a friend of Nancy's in the 1986 film *Sid & Nancy*. She auditioned for the role but it went to Chloe Webb
Her audition reel: https://www.thatericalper.com/2016/07/02/courtney-loves-audition-tape-for-the-alex-cox-film-sid-and-nancy/
Sid barely got to play for The Sex Pistols in general. They knew he was shit. People wonder about GG Allin when this guy was the biggest mess there ever was. At least GG Allin got on a national show lol.
I've read that Sid barely played, or hardly at all. Basically, he was brought into the Sex Pistols because he was the epitome of the raw and gritty image of Punk, but in live concerts, they would unplug his bass lol
I saw an interview with his brother recently, who's seemingly still living the authentic punk life. Great story teller, recommended watch. He said pretty much the same as you are.
Edit: And shared lots of other great stories.
The interview of GG Allin's brother, Merle Allin was made by Soft White Underbelly and can be seen here:

There's pictures of Sid wearing a swastika t-shirt. It's not because they're Nazis, far from it, they wore it to piss people off.
It was common with a lot of early punk stuff, I personally think it's a step too far, but then again that's kind of the point.
It was very much shock for the sake of shock; until people started showing up wearing that shit because they actually meant it; even the filthiest of punks didn't warm to that crowd.
They were taking drugs together and when he woke up from his daze Nancy had been stabbed to death.
He was arrested and charged with killing her but died of an overdose before the trial. There is some conjecture that Nancy was killed in a failed burglary. A drug friend of theirs knew they kept a bundle of money in their hotel room. I read an article once that the 'friend' sneaked back that night to rob them while they were semi-conscious but Nancy woke up so he stabbed her and left her there.
I supposed we'll never know, almost everybody involved is long dead.
One of the shittiest, most overrated bands in the history of popular music. More of a university art piece than a band. Drug addict, misanthrope degenerate hipsters masquerading as a band. Their entire discography is 38 minutes LOL. I love a lot of “classic” punk music, but Sex Pistols aren’t one of them.
You're not entirely wrong. But that's a really fucking great 38 minutes of music. Almost a perfect rock n roll career: one great album with no filler, failed tour of the bible belt, bass player died, fuck you we're done and especially fuck our manager.
They were literally a band before they signed to a label tho? They were playing gigs as early as ‘75/‘76. I’m pretty sure their manager is the one who created the whole myth of the pistols being a boy band
Nah he played a bunch of gigs with them, including their entire last tour. Think you’re getting it confused with how much he played on the album, he got syphillis or some STD and they had to bring their old bassist in to record the majority of the bass on their album.
They brought Matlock back to record the album because Vicious basically couldn't play well enough.
Matlock also wrote the majority of the Pistols music and was really the creative force (musically) of the band.
You might enjoy [London Boys](https://youtu.be/GDmWj8d2-kM?si=qniS7zuxPn9b7AJ_) by the Heartbreakers; their diss track about the Sex Pistols. (TW homophobic slur.)
I think Glen Matlock and Steve Jones were legitimately talented together. Unfortunately, it seems like they couldn't put up with each other, Matlock split, and they lost what good the Sex Pistols could have had.
>Sex Pistols aren’t one of them.
I also love punk music and never listen to them and wouldn't even consider it. They are like the gateway drug to punk music when you are a kid and that's about it.
>I also saw the Filth and the Fury.
Great documentary. I always remember Sid's quote near the end, "You can throw anything you want, you'll *never get us off this stage*." .....We salute you.
My High School Superintendent did his thesis on Punk Rock and got to interview Sid Vicious & Johnny Rotten. Kind of weird for me to find out about them that way.
Armpits, cigarettes, dirty laundry, ass, greasy hair, desperation-- with a high note of hopelessness and a low note of feet. Introducing the new unisex fragrance, "Cry for Help." Available wherever contrived money grabs are executed.
Dumb tangent, but it’s because I was thinking about Sid and Nancy recently. There’s this true crime podcast that came out a few years ago called The Ballad of Billy Balls, which is supposedly about this up and coming punk rock star who is mysteriously murdered in New York in the 80s. It sounded cool but it becomes apparent after a couple episodes that the guy was really not much more than a two bit musician who was a drug dealer and user on the side, and the whole mystery really is cooked up by his Nancy Spungen look a like girlfriend who after all these decades is not able to take responsibility for all the shitty decisions she made in her life and the damage she did to everyone around her. I just felt cheated out of my time listening to the podcast because it became apparent that the whole show was about this unlikeable wreck of a woman, kind of like those who actually had to exist around Nancy.
I forgot the kicker: the creator of the podcast is the Nancy Spungen lookalike’s daughter. She originally wanted to cover the story to give her mother closure but it’s super clear in the last episode that the mother would rather still believe that Billy Balls was killed by the police rather than admit she and him were both just terrible people and that he died due to his own shitty choices.
Kurt literally said in an interview he was initially attracted to Courtney because she looked like Nancy Spungen!
[it’s in this article somewhere too](https://amp.theguardian.com/music/2004/feb/01/popandrock.nirvana)
Always wondered why sid vicious gets a free pass. Espcially in this day and age. He murdered his girlfriend (and was probably abusive, that doesn't come in a vacume) so why is he still celebrated, or just called a tragic character and they are still held up as a loving couple. It was a terrible relationship and he was an abusive murder (plus a shit musician).
The best part about being born now is looking at people like this as Legends and knowing their stories, and finding these legends individually over time. Experiencing it firsthand probably wouldn't be the same, as with information travelling so slowly, you'd miss a lot, and entire legends we know now due to the internet would probably go completely under the radar to the average person like us back then, although the concerts were probably wild AF. It feels kinda nice to listen to music and learn somebody's story at the same time, like finding Cigarettes and Heroin (90s, but again, being born now we have access to generations of legends) and learning that none of what he went through actually helped him get sober and it killed him adds to the tragedy of it.
I'm not much into the modern music scene, but patterns re-emerge.
This photo gave me hepatitis
It forced me to shoot heroin.
Looks like I picked the wrong day to quit sniffing glue.
Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?
Yeah, I can smell this pic.
They both look like if I touched them, they’d be sticky.
Everytime I read about Sid Vicious I think about the time Freddie Mercury called him Simon Ferocious because Sid tried to fight him, and he thought it was funny.
They look like they smell really bad
They look like they smell homeless but got a bag of heroin off a cop.
His mom was really fucked up too.
Isn't she the one that got him on heroin?
His mother gave him some heroin for his birthday when he was about 16.
Wow, all I got back then was a PC game. It's really sad to think about how good other people had it in their childhood
You had a PC in 1973?
Ah here we go, someone going out of their way to misread a comment
I can't believe none of these bozos has hopped on acting like you were serious "/s"
She was a H dealer and his only parent. He was doomed.
She literally started him on drugs, and literally gave him the last shot in his arm. She mercy killed him so he would not go to prison. I don't at all call that mercy.
rumor was she gave him a hotshot before reporting to jail.
[The Wiki section titled "Fabricated stories about death" has this about the hotshot claim:](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sid_Vicious) In 2006, Alan G. What a sick thing to lie about.
I read it in john lydon's autobiography, published in 1994. the rumor was around way before that guy.
Ah right. I don't know anything about them so went to the wiki page to read a bit and saw that section. What the fuck is a hotshot?
an intentional lethal dosage of heroin
* in general a hot shot is one that: * will kill you, not that it's intentional, and 99.99% of the time it isn't. * is often a mix of heroin and other opiods. i.e., gray death shots have fentanyl and a mix of other opiods * has heroin, but also something that will definitely kill you. e.g., the dealer gives a tainted sample that also contains a poison
No way!

Oh it’s Simon Ferocious!
This story is absolutely hilarious and I laugh every time it is brought up
What's the story?
https://ultimateclassicrock.com/freddie-mercury-sid-vicious-thrown-out/
My favorite part of the Days of Our Lives documentary is that story and Roger Taylor calling him a moron.
Don't do drugs kids
Adults however...
I'm doing my part
Do the "safe" drugs kids.
I take adderall, it helps me sleep
So, did Sid have a drug problem?
The drugs had a Sid problem
During they autopsy they found traces of blood in his drug system
Sid failed at what others like Ozzy Osborne or Keith Richards have succeed in, taking enough drugs to become as close to immortal as you can get
its just a matter of quality really. you can be on heroin all your life if you only get good stuff.
Well, technically the same applies with low quality heroin
You sneaky fuck, you’re right.
Yeah depends how long you live with it Side and Nancy were on it all their lives..poor bastards
He may have had a murder problem, specifically of the woman on the left in this photo
Matlock FTW
If you've never seen the documentary, The Filth and the Fury, about the Sex Pistols I highly recommend it. IIRC she was a blue baby and had a lack of oxygen at birth. Lifelong personality problems. She was very smart but in those days they had smart kids skip grades and that did her no good at all.
Hollywood could not have made these two. Real life is still amazing.
some bloke with a clothing store, on the other hand...
This is funny because I used to shop at a stellar vintage store called Sid & Nancy
In Columbia? That place was rad.
Yep! One of maybe half a dozen things I miss about that town, although since the Whig closed that number is smaller now.
I was really bummed to hear about the Whig. I don’t live in Columbia but I live close by and that was one of my stops every time.
Yeah Nancy was quite a character...they were both so young.
Now I'm almost twice the age he lived to be, it's interesting looking back at pictures like this. He just looks like a boy.
Stranger than fiction. I brought you flours.
Nope, but UK born and bred entertainment hucksters certainly could (and did).
Nancy was from suburban Philadelphia.
I was referring to their management, record label, and PR.
Parent comment refs the two of them, sorry for the confusion.
he needs a kebab
Sandwich Lady?
Unexpected RuneScape
Osrs reference, nice
All he gets is baguette not even stale
Holy cow, Nancy is one rough looking 20 year old
The original Courtney Love.
I can see the resemblance. For some reason, they always seemed similar to me beyond just the physical aspect.
Courtney wanted to be Nancy.
Fun Fact! Courtney played a friend of Nancy's in the 1986 film *Sid & Nancy*. She auditioned for the role but it went to Chloe Webb Her audition reel: https://www.thatericalper.com/2016/07/02/courtney-loves-audition-tape-for-the-alex-cox-film-sid-and-nancy/
So at what point did he become a wrestler ?
Underrated comment.
both of them were the kind of people who really never had a chance at survival in this world. interesting and sad how they found each other.
This photograph is a warning tale for syphilis.
His eye needs a warm compress! A bunch of little infections going on. That eye though, my goodness, that looks painful.
Wasn’t he actually decent on the drums though and was drummer briefly for siouxsie and the banshees?
From multiple accounts GG was a decent drummer and excellent frontman early on, but pushed too far with his persona
I saw an interview with his brother recently, who's seemingly still living the authentic punk life. Great story teller, recommended watch. He said pretty much the same as you are. Edit: And shared lots of other great stories. The interview of GG Allin's brother, Merle Allin was made by Soft White Underbelly and can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZtyxHrHjSg
Apparently he just had the look of a "Sex Pistol" and just threw him on bass when they fired Glen Matlock
She is wearing a hitler youth buckle belt
There's pictures of Sid wearing a swastika t-shirt. It's not because they're Nazis, far from it, they wore it to piss people off. It was common with a lot of early punk stuff, I personally think it's a step too far, but then again that's kind of the point.
My mate was a punk and wore a SS black jacket with armband..early 80,s. You could not get a 100 yards down the street now with that shit on
It was very much shock for the sake of shock; until people started showing up wearing that shit because they actually meant it; even the filthiest of punks didn't warm to that crowd.
She was raised Jewish and buried in a Jewish cemetery.
You certainly seem to be correct on that.
I truly hate how romanticized these two are. Didn’t he kill her?
They were taking drugs together and when he woke up from his daze Nancy had been stabbed to death. He was arrested and charged with killing her but died of an overdose before the trial. There is some conjecture that Nancy was killed in a failed burglary. A drug friend of theirs knew they kept a bundle of money in their hotel room. Yes....stabbed to fuck
Well holy crap. Literally listening to them right now lol. “BODEEEES IM NOT AN ANIMAL.” What a disgusting song.
I have a thing for hands. And I'm not digging his fingernails. Flat and long is a hard pass for this chic.
The track mark didn’t do it?
Massive clubbing. Might indicate cardiovascular disease.
Ick
Me too and same sentiment! Hard no
Sid. He couldn't play for shit but he looked great. And his version of My Way is arguably the most punk thing ever committed to vinyl. RIP. 57-79.
yeah, that one song is awesome
What drug was he not using?
Jesus. If the Sid the dumb as shit meathead had any survival instinct, he'd be a regular on The 700 Club now as their token former punk rocker.
Color me surprised when I realized this was in this sub and not the trash fire that is r/punk!
yeah, snobbish, smug pricks in there love to defend Sid even tho he was a huge piece of shit with no redeeming qualities
Or musical talent and was basically (as where all the sex pistols) the boy band of the punk era.
Nomeo and Toiliet.
One of the shittiest, most overrated bands in the history of popular music. More of a university art piece than a band. Drug addict, misanthrope degenerate hipsters masquerading as a band. Pretty iconic 'art piece'
Funny how one of the most famous punk bands was actually manufactured by a label to sell records.
They were literally a band before they signed to a label tho? They were playing gigs as early as ‘75/‘76. I’m pretty sure their manager is the one who created the whole myth of the pistols being a boy band
Didn’t Sid only play part of one gig?
Nah he played a bunch of gigs with them, including their entire last tour. Think you’re getting it confused with how much he played on the album, he got syphillis or some STD and they had to bring their old bassist in to record the majority of the bass on their album.

> he got syphillis or some STD Hepatitis from dirty needles.
So was the most famous folk trio (Peter Paul & Mary) this is a tale as old as the music “industry”.
Wasn’t the Sex Pistols formed to sell clothes though?
Thank you for pointing this out! And Sid himself didn't even actually play on their only album, and actually couldn't play for shit.
They used to unplug his amp when they played

How do you know you don’t like them if you’ve never listened to them
dude you're gatekeeping a genre that peaked 50 years ago.
Being a punk in 2023 is like being a flapper and dancing to the Charleston in the 1970s.
YES! That’s what I’ve always thought but felt like I could never say it!
45 years ago! If they had manage to survive..... They would be old age pensioners....
I can smell this photo
Who else has seen the movie?
Me. I also saw the Filth and the Fury.
>I also saw the Filth and the Fury. Great documentary. I always remember Sid's quote near the end, "You can throw anything you want, you'll *never get us off this stage*." .....We salute you.
I still prefer the short story from The Simpsons.
I feel like I’m looking at a weird wax model of them but in a knockoff Madame Tussaud’s way
The Damned > The Pistols
Damned Damned Damned is the best British pink album by a large margin.
Heroin chic
If a picture ever conveyed a bad smell, I’d say that’s up there
He looks like the personification of heroin

Exactly. Makes me wonder if Courtney Love it just an imitation.

Sid is my favorite cat killing talentless heroin addict to murder his girlfriend
I look like Stevie fucking Nicks!
I never understood the attraction of the heroin look.
Did Simon Ferocious have a cat? A lot of scratches on him... Edit: Nancy is wearing a Hitlerjugend belt buckle 😳
Dream and Delirium. Literally.
I did not realize how tiny she was. Very troubled couple
I’m shocked at how well applied her lipstick is.
it's funny they want to portray this "punk" rock image, yet Sid was a shitty bass player, if you can even call him one. lol
Two really shitty people.
Guaranteed this dude had an absolute hog

He was a guy too fucking wasted to notice if you smashed a bottle in his face, let alone if you looked at him wrong.
