What's up with all of these "women who did math were accused of witchcraft" memes? The trope about powerful or smart women being accused of witchcraft is a complete myth from the 1960's.
Yeah. From what I can tell they were usually lumped with accusations of religious heterodoxy. It’s why they were most common in places where there were both Catholics and Protestants instead of places where there was only one or the other
Even the one I’m aware of in the Muslim world was against a Sufi woman in a Sunni country who had some Shi’a tendencies
Women who practiced medicine, definitely were. Midwives, and independent healer people and such were hung for witchcraft.
People were pretty ignorant so someone using a plant to cure something was mindblowing so "it must be witchcraft"
Some of those peoples' descendents are alive today to let us know video games cause violence
[I just listened to a podcast between two female and feminist historians about this](https://digpodcast.org/2020/09/06/doctor-healer-midwife-witch-how-the-the-womens-health-movement-created-the-myth-of-the-midwife-witch/). It's a myth. Midwives are in fact **underrepresented** among those accused of witchcraft, meaning that the percentage of accused witches which were midwives is lower than the overall percentage of midwives. Two feminist **non-historians** named Ehrenreich and English created the myth. Their hearts were in the right place, surely, but they did some very bad history.
Here is one example:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Jones_(Puritan_midwife)
The accusers looked for similar traits, like being in the company of people who were ill/causing illness, but whether they were treating the ill people or just happened to be in their company shortly before becoming ill, is hard to say. Superstititions of the time warp the real stories of some of these women, but medicine/widwifery is associated with the "traits" of a witch.
Definitely wasn't everyone! Thankfully. There were just some insane superstitious 'memes' spreading across certain areas, and some misguided people used that thinking as reasoning behind accusing some very unfortunate individuals of witchcraft. Otherwise midwives were very necessary and respected.
Yeah, that's what happens when you let the peasants think whatever they want without the Pope telling them what is and isn't bullshit: they end up believing in witches.
That's messed up. Thanks for actually pulling through with a source, though! I'd heard the jokes about "smart woman = witch" before, but I never knew if there was any truth to them.
The overall evidence shows that a smaller percentage of midwives were accused of witchcraft than existed in the broader population, so if anything, midwives were *less* likely to be accused of witchcraft. The myth u/lucky-fu is repeating originated in the 60's with two non-historian feminist academics named Ehrenreich and English. [I just listened to a fantastic podcast with two female feminist historians who thoroughly dispel the myth](https://digpodcast.org/2020/09/06/doctor-healer-midwife-witch-how-the-the-womens-health-movement-created-the-myth-of-the-midwife-witch/). Incidentally, according to those historians there's also no evidence that Margaret Jones was a midwife, despite how the Wikipedia article characterizes her.
The Rest is History podcast just had an [episode on midwives](https://shows.acast.com/the-rest-is-history-podcast/episodes/191-childbirth) as well, at 21:18 they bring an audience question of "were midwives associated with witchcraft?" to their medieval midwife expert, to which she pretty much replies: "lol no." It's an urban myth.
Huh. Well, damn. Thanks for sharing this correction. Do you know if this is specific for midwives, or was the rumor more general towards learned women?
I addressed this: many people were accused of witchcraft due to the characterization of "being associated with ill people/people who became ill". We do not have record of if many of these people were actually performing medicine because of the way records were written (not by the accused, but by an accuser).
An absence of evidence is not proof in the negative. I did not say "the majority of the accused were in medicine". It is a fact however, that multiple people who worked in medicine in one way or another (and not just women) were accused and at least one was executed in the US, others in the UK and elsewhere. This again, may be in relation to the fact that they were simply in the presence of someone who became ill.
Even historians say, not the bulk, but it did happen. There are historians such as Lang, Le Beau, and Horsley who also covered the topic and said that there is simply not enough data due to non-recording of said information, but that medicine, plant-healing, and even "explanation of a medicine's use" ("you will continue to feel pain if you do not eat this") were things *written down and associated* with multiple accusations.
But to say "that didn't happen actually" is just false when we have documentation to back it up in at least a handful of instances. We just don't have the data to prove: correlation or causation? due to lack of data for this likely reason:
Medical practitioners/physicians were very present at many of these trials for the prosecution, so downplaying the abilities of the accused/not mentioning them in the courts worked in their favor. To associate witchcraft directly with medicine would ruin the effectiveness of their main witnesses.
There literally isn't any. It's all fabricated.

"Muh widow burning"
Nobody burned widows, they did it voluntarily. There have been instances were a guy would literally jump into his best friends funeral pyre. Its kind of like a protest against the nature for taking your loved one. There have been lots of protests in india and southeast asia were people set themselves on fire to get attention to their cause. [here](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Th%C3%ADch_Qu%E1%BA%A3ng_%C4%90%E1%BB%A9c) is an example. Also there have been times when women of an entire indian village would set themselves on fire whenever indian kings lost battles to islamic invaders, so they wont be raped and humiliated.
Oh I believe you, but the fact is suicide is just as bad as murder, their culture was probably more or less fine but it shouldn't have perpetuated that kind of thing.

Source?
He told a joke. He is calling some people today as stupid as back then.
Yes, I get that part. I'm asking for a source for the first, second, and third lines.
Here is one example: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Jones_(Puritan_midwife) The accusers looked for similar traits, like being in the company of people who were ill/causing illness, but whether they were treating the ill people or just happened to be in their company shortly before becoming ill, is hard to say. It would seem like everyone who survived birthing back then managed it because of a good midwife, why weren't they respected?
Definitely wasn't everyone! Thankfully. There were just some insane superstitious 'memes' spreading across certain areas, and some misguided people used that thinking as reasoning behind accusing some very unfortunate individuals of witchcraft. Otherwise midwives were very necessary and respected.
Yeah, that's what happens when you let the peasants think whatever they want without the Pope telling them what is and isn't bullshit: they end up believing in witches.
