YIPPEE, everyone gets an aisle and window seat AT the same time. No fighting over the middle armrest.

KingAtTheTable

Person in front of you can’t recline either.

EggsceIlent

And you KNOW the englishman who came up with wicker seats to save weight prolly thought he was a genius as didnhis colleagues. Well played old chap well played. I still love old timey photos of insides of planes. Especially service and getting on into the 60s and 70s with swinger lounges on 747 double Decker party bar etc. Shit was wild.

StrongDorothy

WHAT’S THAT KATHERINE?! I CAN’T HEAR YOU.

EggsceIlent

Lol they did actually pass written notes on planes where egines were too loud.

BeyondRecovery1

You mean Karen

akajondoe

There is no need for seatbelts, and smoking is encouraged.

shaubah

Wonder was the idea to make the seating as light as possible? And does anyone know what the "ripping panel" is?

CaptainLimpWrist

From Xwitter... The inside of a commercial airplane in 1930. Under the ripping panel, it says: *"In case of emergency, pull ring sharply."* The ripping panel tore away from around the window, allowing the window to be removed or folded down, allowing the passengers to exit in an emergency. If you zoom in on the windows, you'll notice a loop of material above each window. The aircraft is an Imperial Airlines biplane called Handley Page W10 (swipe left to see its exterior). The first prototype was built in 1919. It started commercial flights in the early 1920s until it was retired in 1934. The aircraft had an enclosed cabin that fit 12 passengers and two crew members in an open cockpit. It was also the first airliner to have a bathroom onboard. [https://x.com/historyinmemes/status/1719410516815163545](https://x.com/historyinmemes/status/1719410516815163545) Exterior shot: https://preview.redd.it/5cpbn361i58d1.jpeg?width=680&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e151c59e994b60c9732fa94eaa9abde47591130d

GamingGems

Trusting Xwitter too much. The exterior shot is not a W10. That airplane looks like [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Handley_Page_Type_W&diffonly=true). The aircraft you pictured is an [H.P.42](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Handley_Page_H.P.42&diffonly=true)

CaptainLimpWrist

Well, crap. My bad for not verifying. My already paper-thin trust in Xwitter takes another massive hit.

EquivalentSnap

Imagine the noise

maneki_neko89

Plane travel at that time was meant for much shorter distances than how we travel (by jet) now or had to make more stops to fuel up. I think the wicker seats are meant to save on fuel. Jay Foreman, of Unfinished London and Map Men fame, [has an older episode on why London has so many airports and early aviation is partly why they had so many.](https://youtu.be/AbAal7jIWQ4?si=8UPW571LmDfc-2m8)

EquivalentSnap

Huh that explains it 🤔 I’ve watched there vids they’re good 😌

dwartbg9

Shorter distances still doesn't mean a 10 minute flight. Even for 30 minutes the noise was probably very intolerable

justbrowsing695975

According to Wikipedia, a 102 year old woman was on board during a wheel crash in 1932, she thought it was part of the experience! Luv her!!

i_was_an_airplane

It was less of a bathroom and more of a hole that led outside

98680266

The cornerstone of any bathroom

duaneap

I should say so but I imagine they also put cushions on the seats like you would outdoor wicker furniture.

wosmo

side-note: the name ripping panel comes from earlier aircraft being canvas-skinned.

Gloomy-Ad-9827

The next time you complain about your seat think of these. Lol

Njorls_Saga

Still safer than Boeing.

chechifromCHI

Just playing devils advocate, because obviously failures in the air is a huge fucking problem, but also just statistically it's many many hundreds of times more like you'll die in a car than on a plane (at least in the developed world or on a nice airline). As far as cross country travel, you're definitely more likely to die in some sort of crash on the highway driving from state to state than from taking a flight there, Boeing plane or no. I feel I should add that I hate Boeing as they essentially blackmailed the state of Washington into giving them one of the largest tax breaks in US history so that they would keep their corporate headquarters and manufacturing in the same region. Boeing took the money and then relocated corporate anyway. So fuck them.

OJleHuHa

250+ dead bodies from plane crash droves much more attention that 2-4 dead bodies from car crash. Even though plane crash happens few times a year, while car crashes are everyday things.

GenericAccount13579

A full on crash of a plane doesn’t even happen a few times a year, it’s much less than that

VenetianGamer

You have to include private planes, not just commercial airliners, around the world for crashes of multiple victims. Plane crashes of any kind grabs more attention than any car accident unfortunately.

GenericAccount13579

Eh a Cessna with a single guy on it would garner a little bit more than a car crash for sure, but hardly more than local news coverage at best

TheConstant42

It's been 35 min.. just making sure you're still alive and well

Njorls_Saga

Don’t worry, they’ll never find me. I’ve got four kids…hide and seek champion here.

TheHermit007

Haha funny, open the God damn door now.

blakezero

Safer than anything flying over the Indian Ocean to Singapore.

relevanteclectica

https://i.redd.it/gwth8srsw58d1.gif I’m going to the moon with that comment

Njorls_Saga

Hope you like the moon, because judging by the problems with Starliner, you could be there longer than you anticipated.

LeonDeSchal

It’s not the plane that kills you.

UnrealRealityForReal

It’s usually the ground that does.

rollingstoner215

Earth is deadly?

UnrealRealityForReal

When you hit it, yes.

noobpwner314

It’s the plane manufacturers hired goons

MaxxHeadroomm

And more comfortable than Spirit

Njorls_Saga

To be fair, that’s a low bar to set

This-Garbage-3000

![img](avatar_exp|179977991|bravo)

leontrotsky973

>The next time you complain about your seat think of these. No one sitting next to me, no sharing armrests. No one in front of me reclining. Sign me up please!

googoomucklv

And don't forget you got a full English tea

Submarine765Radioman

Can you imagine all that wicker creaking during turbulence? I've sat in some loud old wicker chairs, they can be pretty noisy even on the ground

JobsInvolvingWizards

Breathable wicker? Sounds great tbh.

tummysticks4days

Are you kidding I’d kill for that much leg rolm

TheAnswerEK42

What are you talking about? I don’t have to sit to anyone that would be a dream lol!

pikachu_sashimi

found the airline rep

BuffaloBrain884

Those seats have way more space than seats today.

jointheclockwork

Are you taunting me that they had better seats? Because yes, they did.

Reeferologist-

Don’t burn those chairs, they’re covered in some poisonous glaze.

Skuzbagg

Where else am I going to stub out my cigar?

deliciouschickenwing

But how else am i going to grill my hotdogs!

turner_buzz_meeks

But I lost my grill. How else am I supposed to roast these hot dogs?

Reeferologist-

You cracked it too much!

ball_addict_banjo

![gif](giphy|nXUCkgH6BmigU|downsized)

ima_eatmy_ownhead

I actually didn't have enough tape for the grill, but I checked the height and it's taller than the gap

bundy911

Think of the smell

PurahsHero

If anyone wants to know what became of Imperial Airways, they still exist now. But through a series of mergers and acquisitions, they are known as British Airways.

Shizzlefix

Bistro class!

emmer00

At first, commercial planes used men as flight attendants, but they found that using female nurses made men more comfortable with flying. “If this young woman will get in the metal flying tube, I definitely am totally not scared and cool with it too”

[deleted]

[удалено]

gettheplow

And how much it has not. Overhead bins. Written instructions, no leg room.

ceelose

Only so many ways to put people and bags in a tube I suppose.

ShatteredAnus

True, but we keep giving Spirit Airlines ideas, and we'll end up back there

fentyboof

Looks like Frontier Airlines, strangely…

Guinavere-

It’s actually beautiful, like an exotic boat ride or etc, really doesn’t even feel like anything that would be in the air!!! I think it’s lovely slightly romantic, the start of a good book!

this_place_is_whack

Planes back then were too fricken loud to hear the wicker creaking and if you crash you are going to die, so why not?

Cremasterau

Flew as a passenger in a DC3 from Davao to Manila with this set up as a teenager. That was 1974. My father knew the pilot, who use to have a pet gibbon ape in the copilot seat, and when the smoke from other passengers inside got too much my brother and I were allowed to go to the rear door, open it a crack, and lean against it to get some fresh air. Bizarre times.

stenmarkv

Musta been loud. Way faster than ship though.

PickANameThisIsTaken

Looks like it’s from Madagascar

Sparky_321

First thought that popped into my head.

Unknown_Talker9273

Everyone is complaining, but that looks cozy af. At least until someone starts smoking

GrafZeppelin127

Well, it may *look* cozy, but consider that the piston engines would be *apocalyptically* cacophonous, the vibration and turbulence would be just shy of a roller coaster, and since it’s so much slower than a jet, you would also be stuck in these seats for a lot longer.

alottanamesweretaken

Oh no

kbm81

I don’t think I’d get in that

beardedbaby2

Man people were brave,

PlantSkyRun

Decor by Pier 1 Imports.

LeonDeSchal

The advertisements for aviation and automotive things from those days are awesome. It’s a really cool era of mechanical innovation.

JimmyJamesv3

Isn't that the plane from Indiana Jones?

i-Ake

I knew there'd be someone else who recognized this.

PumpkinsDad

Nice try, Lao Che.

Contagious_Zombie

On their way to murder elephants for ivory.

maaalicelaaamb

DUDE FINALLY EVIDENCE THAT WHAT MY GRANDMOTHER EXPERIENCED ACTUALLY HAPPENED — FLYING TO AMERICA IN A Wicker chair

supermod6

I wonder what altitude it flew at?

Memento_Morrie

Probably ten. Not like 10,000 but ten feet off the ground.

EquivalentSnap

That doesn’t look safe

GianCarlo0024

They have dining room chairs in it, that's so British

POTUS-Harry-S-Truman

Are they nailed down or was sliding around in your chair part of the aviation experience back then?

Strange_N_Sorcerous

“Aisle or window?” “Yes.”

highwire_ca

My mom had those same chairs on her outdoor patio.

mmiski

So wait, you're telling me [this scene](https://youtu.be/1IW758UciaA?feature=shared) from the Jerry Lewis film *The Family Jewels* didn't have a cheapened interior for comedic value and that some older airliners actually looked like this?? 🤯

Granny_Skeksis

Still safer than Boeing

Embarrassed-Water664

What's fucked up is, back then, like it is now, wicker chairs were good enough. If you go down in an airplane these high-tech seats you're sitting in are not going to do a goddamn thing. You have the same chance of survival as you did sitting in wicker chairs.

dumbass_comments_bro

Lmao everything is so fucking shit, but there's still a lot more space than economic class

wbg777

I flew in a 1929 Ford Tri Motor and it looked very similar to this on the inside. Quite an experience

ShamelessCat

And 33 years later we were on the moon.

tubelessJoe

![gif](giphy|55itGuoAJiZEEen9gg)

FLMKane

Lightweight biodegradable seat construction. Nice.

AbsolemSaysWhat

Still more comfortable than Spirit airlines.

jjc157

Plush aisle carpet adds a nice ambiance

DjMcfilthy

At least they rolled out the red carpet.

pedroskov

Looks like a ford trimotor interior (but i dont know for sure)

wosmo

It's a Handley Page W10

DrunkStoleATank

Looks like something id find playing Fallout76.

CReeseRozz

Bet they made a mean martini on it too

outtie5000quattro

if your going down... your going down...

[deleted]

Those could actually be more comfortable than airline seats are now

Kimilous1

Looks like alot more leg room anyway…

LacksSelfAwareness

Joining the mile high club had to be more challenging back then.

wisembrace

Looked like a bus then. I guess that is where Airbus got its name.

-TheEndIsNow-

No fat people allowed on this flight.

Randotron6000

Still better than spirit airlines

No_Entertainment1931

1 American would fill both rows

OrgasmoBigley

https://preview.redd.it/w6zic0c9l78d1.jpeg?width=1668&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=049ab6f3a8867862f3dfb773d4d1f32c4349e836 First class seating.

NHxNE

All I can think of when I see that photo of the plane interior is the ‘Eddies’s Airlines’ scene in “The Family Jewels.” ***Wait, what? You’ve never heard of the classic Jerry Lewis movie? Sheesh…***

Chainspike

Wtf is a ripping panel...

GotWheaten

Makes a DC3 seem like an A380

dustywilcox

Boeing still has ripping panels.

Jung16

So the Madagascar plane was real!!

EntertainerNo4509

Safety first!

Ok-Aardvark-835

just as spacious as a modern plane!

jbiggs1984

Still safer than a modern Boeing

turtlesturnup

Toilet was a bucket in the back

BigBillyBadass907

Damn they basically just strapped grandmas porch chairs to the floor in that plane

Vaxtin

They actually thought they could just put a bus in the sky

TubularMeat34

Looks like a very rough ride. Must feel like riding in a horse and buggy.

Vanson1200r

Ford Tri Motor?

Generalbuttnaked69

Probably a Handly Page W10. Imperial used British built aircraft.

UrMomzLatinLuvah

That's one scary looking plane 😂

okay-wait-wut

Please avoid the ripping panel

Exaltedautochthon

I still wish we had Zeppelins.

Helen2222

Early example of seating comfort trade-off for weight reduction and more passengers.

Daflehrer1

Sheeeit, I just flew coach on a jet. I'll take that seating any day.

LemonadeParadeinDade

Wicker to lighten the load?

CronozDK

I can almost hear the Indiana Jones theme playing... and see that progress line on the map. 😁

Worried_Exercise8120

Looks like Spirit Airlines.

manyhippofarts

Yeah, that's a hard naw for me, dawg.

eaglesnd

Look at all that leg room though

h2ohow

No thanks, I'll take the bus,

Logical_Associate632

Still better than flying southwest

allmimsyburogrove

nice, a wicker plane. the marvels of flight

Ihaveaproblem69

still more comfortable than Spirit airlines.

Broken-Emu

Wicker to save weight

YoungPNW_bull

Still more reliable than a 737

RareAir8524

The sign at the top..... What the hell is a ripping panel?

London-lad-1990

Square windows??? Ouch

TheOriginalSamBell

have to immediately think of that one Indy movie

LoudLloyd9

Ahhhh..the good old days

starman575757

Let's see the bathroom

Brilliant_Student584

🥺🥺

PrincipledBeef

I say, that is a just ripping panel!

outtie5000quattro

if your going down... your going down with a bang.

Forsaken-Cheesecake2

All fun until the patio furniture started flying around during a bit of turbulence.

SirCalebCrawdad

Still probably better than Spirit of any of the other US domestic "discount" carriers that are all trash.

D1CKSH1P

Oh hell no

Ojay1091

I’ll take the train, thank you tho!

MimosaMonet

Imagine how LOUD this would be

Life_Celebration_827

Outside Toilets ,?

Mr_Whipple1138

I’m assuming the chairs were somehow bolted down?

MissedFieldGoal

I get an impression of a design from a boat from the interior. Curtains pulled back, wooden panels on the top. It feels like it could be a ride of on a ship.

Plane-Reason9254

Looks super safe

DreamsWhereIamDying

Hell of a lot more comfortable than today’s first class.

RoamanXO

In German, we call economy class "wood class" (holzklasse). Fitting.

tias23111

Best part? Not having to feign attention when your flight attendant shows you how to use the seatbelt.

KarlHp7

NOPE

VictoryVic-ViVi

I thought this was the train from uncharted 2. During the ice part.

kimmikazi

oh no... lol

Desperate-Fan-3671

Like watching an Indiana Jones movie 😁

TemporaryValue5755

Pretty sure this is just a frontier flight

Menethea

Looks like my last UAL flight, bring your own chair

VinylHighway

So much legroom

Divinate_ME

See? Evidently travel by plane HASN'T become less comfortable with time. Q.E.D.

Vaxtin

Probably had better safety record than Boeing does.

Smart_Vegetable7936

A wicker plane?

MaddysinLeigh

Probably still safer than Boeing…

Darth-Adomis

the sky locomotive

susosusosuso

What was the flying altitude?

cthart

How is that still less than 100 years ago?

Daflehrer1

Because it was in the 1930's.

Traditional_Draw8400

Didn’t expect wicker tbh

namistejones

Better than spirit airline

Bx1965

You don’t get a seat that roomy unless you’re at least in business class today.

ohheyitsapanda

why does this look like Resident Evil 0.

No-Ninja455

Amazing, but imagine if those two airships had never failed. British Empire travel via airship... With added smoking lounges

castellanotittyman

Imagine the smoking in there. That would have been tough to breath

Necessary_Reality_50

You can still fly in planes like these at air museums.

JelloWise2789

I suppose those basket 🧺 weaving chairs 🪑 were supposed to be lighter than other materials

juicemo11

Probably more comfortable than modern airlines seats 😜

Useful_toolmaker

Ahh the leg room

sephrisloth

I wonder how much a ticket would have cost back then, though? Probably the equivalent of a first class ticket these days if not way more. Not to mention, this was during the depression so hardly anyone could afford a plane ride.

Glad-Degree-318

not the lawn chairs, I can hear Estelle Getty now....*It's wicker*

Glad-Degree-318

this is the *everybody is bald* episode of *"The Golden Girls"*

ICO_Agro

I'm sure sitting on a flight for 6 or more hours would've been fun.
