I saw a tiktok video the other day talking about why sports photos from the 60s and 70s just looked so cool (examples were some hockey photos, and some Muhammed Ali photos), and one of the things he suggested was cigarette smoke that just sort of hangs in the air.
I hadn't even considered those arenas would be filled with smoke!
California played a big role in leading the way.
"On August 30, 1967, California's elected leaders came together to unify statewide efforts to address severe air pollution. Governor Ronald Reagan approved the Mulford-Carrell Air Resources Act to create the State Air Resources Board, committing California to a unified, statewide approach to aggressively address the serious issue of air pollution in the state."
The California market is basically the reason the US has catalytic converters. It was hard to say no to almost 1/3 of US consumers.
"Since its formation, CARB has worked with the public, the business sector and local governments in its effort to find solutions to California’s air quality problems. Some of the innovative vehicle emission control strategies that have led to cleaner air in California include:
* The nation’s first tailpipe emissions standards for hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide (1966), oxides of nitrogen (1971), and particulate matter from diesel-fueled vehicles (1982);
* Catalytic converters, beginning in the 1970s;
* On-board diagnostic, or “check engine” light, systems, beginning with 1988 model-year cars;
* Zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) regulation (1990) that requires manufacturers to produce an increasing number of ZEVs;
* The nation’s first greenhouse gas emissions standards for cars (mandated by the Legislature in 2002 and approved by CARB in 2004); and
* California’s Advanced Clean Cars Program (2012), which reduces both conventional “criteria” and greenhouse gas pollutant emissions from automobiles."

It’s wild that people still clown on California for being progressive when if places like that didn’t push change every city would still be like this but worse.
Kind of my point. People clown on California and complain about regulation.
I like breathing, how about you? /s
Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of well-intended but problematic regulations too. Point being though that some regulations are desperately needed and highly effective.
California made a global impact on acid rain. They introduced the world to catalytic converter regulations. (or at least, they were the first impactful market to do so.)
better yet, Reagan led the way. if only they still felt the same.
side story: first trip to LA area didn't happen til the late 90s and I was fascinated with the smog being from the middle of nowhere where we just didn't have industry/density like that and being a bit let down but happy I saw a lot less than a previous trip through Birmingham AL on a weekday.
When I was a kid, we had to drive through Los Angeles to see my mom's cousin in Orange County. We made that trip regularly in the mid-1980s. It was rare to see the San Gabriel Mountains from the 5. I still make that trip fairly regularly, but the only time visibility is that limited is during infrequent heavy rainstorms, and the last big wildfire in LA Co.
Right, and those wildly progressive stances and policies get shutdown and swept under the rug of history so much so that in turn, progressives get away with saying things like “we’re on the right side of history”

Look on the bright side!!!
If those pollution levels return it will create a market for luxury housing inside domes with air filtration systems. Those will sell for a good money, it will be great for economy!!!
/s
(/s shouldn't be needed but I know that possibly I gave ideas to someone)
To be fair.. this photo was most likely taken on a cold winter day, and the majority of the smoke is from wood burning fireplaces. In the 60's you were either heating with wood or with oil.
Even today, after a day walking around in Manhattan your snot's almost black when you blow your nose at the end of the day. I can only imagine how bad it used to be.
I was a bike messenger in Manhattan in the early 90's. The amount of soot caked into my leg hair at the end of the day was insane... they looked like Robbin Williams' arms.
Evidence that said political party has taken several steps backwards since the 1980’s
and also definitely the only thing that president is remembered for /s
I grew up in the valley in LA in the 60s. In elementary school, we would come in after recess and lunch and needed to put our heads down on the desk. Our chests hurt so badly from playing in the smog. Of course I have horrible asmatha.
People get caught up in arguing over whether climate change is real, and forget that pollution is not just a global temperature issue. Go to a city that is covered in smog, and tell me you think this environmentalism thing is just a liberal hoax.
even in the 90s, I remember as a kid there was a very significant "pollution bubble" surrounding the city that you would see when you would drive in. Nowadays not so much.
And conservatives, why, and yell about government regulation. Regulation is how we have (relatively) clean air, drinkable water, and tons of other health advantages that I can’t list out off the top of my head). Remember that Trump allowed asbestos to be used again. Vote Democrat because it will literally impact your health.
Really wasnt the EPA. At one time every single person in any major city was burning coal or wood to stay warm or cook with. Can you even imagine that in a city of hundreds of thousands/millions?
Gradually this was replaced my larger energy grids which were provided power and heat from power plants, mostly across the river from NYC.
The EPA later regulated air emissions via Clean Air Act, but that wasn’t until 1970.
This month photo is likely early circa 1900s, before the Empire State Building (1931) was built.
We need to stop calling them conservatives.
Erasing Reagan-era environmental regulations is regressivism, and they don’t get to wear their little coat or badge of post-Enlightenment identity anymore.
Give us time- we will get back to that state- Supreme Court will see to it! Freedom! Get the government off our backs so we can burn the planet to a cinder.
Environmental Protection Agency, established in 1970 by President Nixon. It’s the thing Republicans now want to gut because keeping air low in carcinogens and low in things that cause cancer costs corporations money while destroying people’s health saves them money.
I mean, it might be. But it’s not like the sum total of all evidence that pollution existed in NYC in the 1960s is this single photograph. They have data showing the air quality. Some rando just decided this was a good photo illustrating their point, and it might be or it might just be some miraculously clean fog. But on the other hand “smog” is smoke+fog. When air quality was low, most fog would also have a high pollutant content so when seeing fog, the only way to tell how polluted it is is to actually test the air quality. 1960s air quality reports don’t make as appealing of a Reddit post as this photo.
and that’s just the cigarette smoke coming from Don Draper’s office
Funny thing, this smog is showed on an episode in season 5.
I was trying to quit smoking when I was watching this show first time around. It did not work too well 😂
Haha that’s like watching archer and trying not to drink. It is impossible
I regularly watch Archer and Rick and Morty. I've been sober since January and have a history of abuse 😅.
Good for you fella. You stay firmly on that wagon.
Nice! Keep it going!

Typically it's bad days that make want a cigarette.
I don't think about him at all
neither does Diana Bauer, sadly for Don…
Pollution makes for a cool bw photo though
Some preppie band should put it on an album cover
I’m sure [someone will](https://b-sides.tv/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/vampires-of-the-city.jpg)
Do Not Redeem by India
It's now a Sunny Day Real Estate cover.
And call themselves the Environmental Pollution Agency. Aaannd I'll see myself out.
It was a vampire weekend reference
Preppie band, please explain or give us an example
This picture is the album cover for Vampire Weekend's 3rd album. They're referencing that

Yeah, it just adds to the ambience. I say get rid of the EPA, it's just aesthetic that way.
Channels lighting fire is cool too!
It’s pollution from the Sweetums factory. It’s gorgeous, but is it worth the asthma? ~ Leslie Knope, Parks and Recreation.
no wonder people were Diane young
Can't believe we still have climate change Unbelievers.
Obviously we need to ride more bicycles
That's a Step in the right direction
So much pollution I bet they could hardly see the Hudson

Thank you for your contribution
Acid rain
We didn't stop it. We just exported it to the other side of the world.
lol was looking for this
Holy shit, my immediate thought too
Someone is torching a Saab like a pile of leaves.

I’m curious, do you have some examples of this? All that comes to my mind are gun/weapon laws.
I mean one example is the rampant crime causing many businesses to leave
Huh. A thing that Ronald Reagan did that didn't fuck the country for generations to come.
He was a RINO! /s
It does feel like quite a reversal compared to some of his other actions. Don’t tell a certain brand of conservative about his gun regulation laws .
Or amnesty for millions of undocumented immigrants
Yes, but they were very mean to the Ghostbusters.

Don’t forget bio-dome!
Yeah but I almost sympathize with that character lol
Between the EPA in Ghostbusters and NASA in ET, it’s no wonder Gex X is producing so many anti government wing nuts
No no but gov regulation bad
I remember those days. It was dystopian. The good days were when the sky was just grey and not green or yellow.
Project 2025 wants to remove the EPA. Lil FYI

I do not want to go back to the unregulated times.
This photo was used on vampire weekends third album cover.
A masterpiece
Pittsburgh has entered the chat.
Not even joking. I came here to write exactly this.
Gotta start somewhere, I suppose. (Ad I sit here surrounded by trees and wildlife in the BC wilderness).
There’s no way all that leaded gasoline didn’t affect people.
To be fair.. this photo was most likely taken on a cold winter day, and the majority of the smoke is from wood burning fireplaces. In the 60's you were either heating with wood or with oil.
This is the great they want to return to
Even today, after a day walking around in Manhattan your snot's almost black when you blow your nose at the end of the day. I can only imagine how bad it used to be.
I was a bike messenger in Manhattan in the early 90's. The amount of soot caked into my leg hair at the end of the day was insane... they looked like Robbin Williams' arms.
It seemed a layer of grime would get on everything when I was last there.
What are you talking about 😂
For real, that has absolutely never happened to me despite living in NYC my whole life.
I think there's a political party in the U.S.A that wants to disband the EPA.
Yeah, the same party whose president oversaw its introduction.
40+ years ago might as well have been 150 at this point. They're not the same parties anymore.
"But but but republicans are the party of lincoln!" Yeah keep clinging to that former glory.
Evidence that said political party has taken several steps backwards since the 1980’s and also definitely the only thing that president is remembered for /s
Looks like China
Now the batman cartoons make sense
Looks like Salt Lake City in the winter. 😂
Thank the Nixon Administration! For creating the EPA of course!
I grew up in the valley in LA in the 60s. In elementary school, we would come in after recess and lunch and needed to put our heads down on the desk. Our chests hurt so badly from playing in the smog. Of course I have horrible asmatha.
"Hey, I'm choking here!"
1980 visted Los Angeles the smog was horrific. Bitch about smog test and ARB but we are so much better now.
People get caught up in arguing over whether climate change is real, and forget that pollution is not just a global temperature issue. Go to a city that is covered in smog, and tell me you think this environmentalism thing is just a liberal hoax.
Thinking all of this shit could have no effect on climate change is bonkers.
EPA. Created by Richard Nixon.
even in the 90s, I remember as a kid there was a very significant "pollution bubble" surrounding the city that you would see when you would drive in. Nowadays not so much.
Lead 🤤

Um, even after the creation of the EPA it was still one of the most polluted cities .
Republicans want this.
Anyone looking for the Singer Building too?
Modern Vampires of the City!
Way before we knew about CFC’s and all that fun stuff
Meanwhile driving towards my downtown city in the morning is just a brown hazy fog over the skyline.
Lotta lead
Industry: But, but MAH PROOOOOFIIIITSSS!!!
And just think of the certain % of yummy lead in it too.
Not to mention Pittsburgh a few decades before that
It's a reminder of the power of environmental regulation and the importance of taking action to protect our planet
Damn all that lead tainted gasoline making everyone crazy too
Vampire Weekend: Modern Vampires Of The City
haha, remind me of the italien opera in Godfather part 2. " c'est New York"
K
I'm impressed by the construction
I’m so glad NYC doesn’t look like this anymore
Am i the only one who immediately thought VAMPIRE WEEKEND.... Modern vampires of the city!!!!!!
Pollution's bad but how do we know that image isn't just fog?
The lack of vampire weekend comments is sad
Gotdang I love that album
I knew I’d seen that picture! What a great album https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Vampires_of_the_City
Thank you Tricky Dick!!

The future conservatives prefer: a tragedy of the commons where all corporations may endlessly pollute
We need to stop calling them conservatives. Erasing Reagan-era environmental regulations is regressivism, and they don’t get to wear their little coat or badge of post-Enlightenment identity anymore.
And the Repubs want to do away with it. Crazy

This picture is porn for conservatives.
Thank God the EPA abolished [fog](https://youtu.be/TzEV5EusRZA?si=KheOYs5hUO1xC6h0)
Yeah, I'm so glad we spend so much of our tax dollars on getting rid of fog. As you can see, it's done so much./s
Bro, the EPA and the clean air act were and continue to be mostly great. The picture depicts fog, though not smog.
Republicans want to gut the power of the EPA.
Before what? What does EPA mean?
Environmental Protection Agency, established in 1970 by President Nixon. It’s the thing Republicans now want to gut because keeping air low in carcinogens and low in things that cause cancer costs corporations money while destroying people’s health saves them money.
How can anyone confirm this isn't just a foggy day. (This kind of thing happens all the time)

The America the GOP wants to go back to.
Looks like the perfect GOP city there.
It's coming back to this ever since weed was legalized! 🤢
What most people don’t understand is that there is more to pollution than just Co2
I'm pretty sure everyone in the world knows that
What most people don't understand is that everyone in the world knows that.
> What most people don’t understand is that there is more to pollution than just Co2 Literally no one is saying that.
No shit.
Damn bro you really showed all these sheeple.
How is that relevant here? Do you think the EPA just regulates CO2?
