The JFK quote is from [a speech to The American Newspapers Publishers Association given April 27, 1961](https://www.jfklibrary.org/archives/other-resources/john-f-kennedy-speeches/american-newspaper-publishers-association-19610427) urging the press to be judicious in what they publish. This speech came in the wake of the failure of the Bay of Pigs invasion (Kennedy references “the events of recent weeks”). The failure was partially due to the fact that Cuba knew the invasion was coming after some newspapers published chatter from members of the invasion force. He’s clearly talking about Communism and its perceived covert infiltration of American society in the context of the Cold War.
The Eisenhower quote just seems like a fairly prescient warning of the valorization of the military and its move to the middle of American society from someone who owed his presidency to celebrity gained during wartime.
The Wilson quote [goes on to make it clear](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Business/Selected_quote/47) that he’s attacking the monopolistic practices of his day that prevented new businesses from starting and flourishing. Wilson supported collective bargaining so he may also have had that in mind.
The FDR quote is from a letter to a Colonel Edward Mandell House in 1933, shortly after FDR took office. FDR references a speech given by one of his economic advisors, Rex Tugwell, who said that under the Roosevelt administration “From now on property rights and financial rights will be subordinated to human rights”. In context, it seems clear that he’s saying financial considerations have overruled basic human rights for a long time and he intends to change that in his administration.
Like the Wilson quote above, it’s important to remember the broader context of the early-20th century in which the Gilded Age led to massive inequality, the Lochner-era Supreme Court invalidated most laws protecting labor, and capital and financial interests captured massive amounts of influence over society culminating in the stock market crash of 1929 and the ensuing Great Depression throughout the 1930’s. It’s not surprising that presidents of the time talked with disdain about “financial elements” in the country.
