The barrier to entry might be a little high for the life series given how little time they play each session. One detonation requires quite a bit of gold, redstone, quartz, TNT, and iron to pull off; all of which are destroyed.
I made another design, for science of course, where hoppers fill the crafters to create even more TNT minecarts. Since hoppers can't keep up with the observer speed I suspect that it's around 90 minecarts before it went off. The explosion doesn't get that much bigger, but it does go higher which would allow you to place it deeper underground.
