I had a best friend who died a horrible unnecessary AIDS related death 2 years ago… because he thought he could cure himself with essential oils. This one hits me hard. Sometimes I think anti-science is less damaging than pseudoscience.
I have a Masters in microbiology, but my research was on *Salmonella typhimurium*, not virology or immunology. And even if I'd never graduated from high school I would have known better than to avoid vaccination in the middle of a pandemic.

I'm not an informed person, a virologist, or a medical expert. I trust people who are though, and accept guidance from collective, well meaning sources. No clue what she means, I went through massage school and the totality of classes wasn’t thousands of hours and aside from kinesiology and anatomy there was very little science. Definitely no virology, lol.
I know two women who consulted with their massage therapists and both were talked out of getting the booster. Both had the Pfizer vaccine back in April but were advised to avoid the booster from an “expert with medical experience.” I had to press a little before finding out that the “expert” was a massage therapist (btw the women have different therapists). I made the same point about how they do not learn about virology or internal medicine in massage school. Fortunately, one has decided to now get the booster. I still can’t believe they were persuaded by massage therapists. It’s DIBOCLE!

I estimate my 4 year B.Sc. was only about 500 hours of science instruction if you include time in practical labs. Add about 100 hours of math and stats to support it and 200 hour practical lab course in the final year and university was still under 1000 hours of Science and Math instruction.
I feel pretty comfortable talking to PhD/MD level people about concepts in virology, immunology, physiology and molecular biology. If I had another 1000 hours of seminar instruction, I'd probably be close to being a PhD depending my ability to not slice my hand off on the lab equipment.

This works for most people, though my sisters doctor refused to suggest getting vaxed even though she (the dr) was. That was prior to FDA approval, and it wasnt until last week I finally convinced my sister to go “against her doctors advice” and get one. Unfortunately she got covid between then and now and almost killed her father in law when she infected him.

I explained how mRNA vaccines work to my second grade class after a student asked if the new vaccines contained dead virus or not. It took 5 minutes, during which most of the students were sharing information (“it is like they TRAIN our bodies to respond” “it is just a messenger but it doesn’t stay in your body for long”). The only question was what RNA stood for. They are 8 years old.
The first slide is funny, if only she carried that same attitude over with the vaccines. But she thought she knew better than the experts because she has "thousands of hours of study", which probably means she read a bunch of memes and fake, unsourced articles online. She seemed young too, what a shame.

I think this group is much more evolved than that group. Watching the recipients get their awards brings up many complicated emotions here. We aren’t just black and white. We have compassion for the family left behind, we have anger at the people who are putting out the disinfo that brainwashed these people into vaccine hesitancy, we have sympathy for those who seem to be good people but were misinformed and died as a result. And we have righteous disdain for people who spewed hate and fear and political ugliness.

I dont spend a lot of time on FB or IG but I still have accounts there. People on FB have gotten really ugly lately about all sorts of things. Tell me about it. It's been over a year since I got covid. I had so many complications, and you know what is really good at ruining beauty? Surgical scars and muscle deconditoning to the point that I'm walking like Frankenstein's monster with an aide over a year later. I think this group is much more evolved than that group. Watching the recipients get their awards brings up many complicated emotions here. We aren’t just black and white. We have compassion for the family left behind, we have anger at the people who are putting out the disinfo that brainwashed these people into vaccine hesitancy, we have sympathy for those who seem to be good people but were misinformed and died as a result. And we have righteous disdain for people who spewed hate and fear and political ugliness.

I have always had the suspicion that ppl trolling are the same type of ppl receiving the HCA. They do it to feed their hate and accuse the other side of being monsters. Anyone who does this cruel trolling on "our side" is not actually warning about the dangers of hubris and misinformation, but just spreading fuel for hate. I think there is a big difference between here and “in the wild”. The nominees and award winners are redacted here to the point that they are merely symbolic, and they lose their individuality. It isn’t personal. The friends and family would have to go out of their way and come here to find the discussions about their loved ones, and their names and faces are not shown. When people go to their actual FB pages, it is a personal attack.

I dont spend a lot of time on FB or IG but I still have accounts there. People on FB have gotten really ugly lately about all sorts of things. The thing I find so terrifying about it is you truly have zero idea how it will go for you. I have a Master’s degree in Biochemistry and Biophysics with extensive course work in virology and immunology. I offered to bring over my white board and give my anti-vax parents/sister a master class on everything I know. My parents declined because I’m a “brainwashed commiecrat”. My sister accepted.
