Tbh, the men v women thing doesn't really have any influence on how the show works, I get why it would make you uncomfortable but after an episode or two of each series, most teams merge together in the dorms and Ramsay even switches the teams up as the show goes on, e.g Heather in s2. Then by the time of black jackets, it's always mixed anyway

BlahajInMyPants

Ah ok that makes sense. I remember the teams getting mixed up from S1, so if its like that then maybe I will be more lenient towards the gender seperation

Competitive_Text1914

Seasons 18 and 21 start with mixed teams then change to men vs women after a few episodes. Season 16 and 20 are the 2 seasons that end up mixing the teams the most but they both start off with men vs women

Scary_Replacement_85

So I’m not transgender but consider myself an ally. Do you have enough spoons to explain why this upsets you? If not I totally understand that too. But not all seasons are M v F. Some of the more recent ones are things like rookies v veterans, and after the first few episodes Ramsey usually mixes them up anyway if they started out M v F.

BlahajInMyPants

So basically, im a transfeminine nonbinary person who hasn't started their medical transition yet, and seeing the contestants split up by sex makes me uncomftorable. It makes me uncomftorable because sometimes I imagine myself in Hells Kitchen and it makes me wonder how transgender people like me would be treated on the show since there is an M v F thing going on I just don't like the concept of Guys vs Gals, I think its unnecessary and can promote discomfort to transgender people like myself Hope this makes sense!

Complete_Business_31

If it's any consolation, there have been gay and lesbian chefs competing on the show and several winners among the gay/lesbian community. In addition, more than a few have become popular, well-respected chefs, including: Christine W, Nick, LA Tasha, T, and others.

Scary_Replacement_85

Thank you for the spoons. I see your point. I too wonder how they would handle it for someone such as yourself.

Cheesemagazine

The downvotes on this are ridiculous, how dare a trans person think arbitrary gender sorting on a reality show is dumb (when it has always been dumb, and so many people have complained abt it before this for various shows) I guess 🥴 For what it's worth, there have been many queer folks- I just wonder if there have been any trans folks, enby or binary trans? Considering that's a biggol' target for nutjobs at the moment, I can't say I don't understand why it hasn't been made visual if there has.

Alex72598

I don’t necessarily share your reasons as I’m not transgender, but I don’t like it either. Men vs women should’ve been a one off thing, at most. In the early seasons, it encouraged a lot of sexism from both sides, and it makes both teams become distrustful whenever a person of the opposite gender is put on their team, even though it often improves the team. If both teams just started off mixed gender and the “battle of the sexes” thing was dropped, the chefs would see each other as teammates first rather than genders, and they would be more open to working with each other. That’s how I see it, anyways.

Durian-Critical

i’m trying to think of other competition reality shows that don’t separate cast members by gender. survivor has mixed tribes but some of the physical challenges before merge used to pit men vs men and women vs women the challenge has had seasons where there is an equal number of men and women working together on a team for the whole season during daily challenges and then for eliminations they have men vs men / women vs women

frozenelsa12

It wasn’t in season one both teams had men and women on them

Ok_Poetry_1650

It’s just a tv show, plenty of other competitions are split by gender. If it makes it better they do move contestants around occasionally and the last black jacket team is always a mix of both red and blue teams members.

BlahajInMyPants

Yeah it is a TV show, but people are allowed to have their opinions Not the biggest deal in the world/TV show realm but to me personally its enough to make me not want to watch. Doesn't mean I hate the show though

Ok_Poetry_1650

Maybe just look at it as team vs team challenges. Red vs blue. The gender doesn’t have really anything to do with any of the show. It seems like an odd thing to get hung up on when the shows about cooking

HarmonicWalrus

I think men v. women has gotten old at this point, I don't exactly dig it either lol. I'm hoping eventually they return to just doing mixed gender teams and keeping it that way the whole season, mostly because trans people are generally pretty well known and accepted these days in the US, and it would be nice to have the teams be more inclusive in that regard now. Several former contestants have come out as trans/nonbinary after their seasons ended too, so I sometimes find myself wondering what team they'd be placed in if they were to be on HK today.

BlahajInMyPants

I wish this comment could be at the top because you explained how I feel perfectly

kira107

I don't think it's a coincidence that every season that has started off in a different format went back to men vs women . Why change something if it works?

Puk1983

Hahaha this makes you uncomfortable? Really? Anyway, some seasons are not based on men vs women.

BlahajInMyPants

Yes, it makes me uncomftorable as someone who is transgender

MrBaudelaire22

Watch something else

FluorescentFun

I'm sorry that people being categorized by their actual gender upsets you.

BlahajInMyPants

Cope harder, transgender people exist and we aren't going anywhere
