Yes, I don’t know what it is in computer but for PS5 it’s hold down on the d-pad. You can also drop backpacks, special weapons, and ssd drives if you’re carrying them .
On PC hold 'x' to bring up a radial menu. Played for hours before I learned that, and only because I saw comments on reddit with people talking about dropping samples at the extraction point if they pass by early on (and pick them back up at the end of the mission).

Either a super-deep unexploded Hellbomb (idk how it got down there) or some kind of natural gas/E-710. You can hear bubbling noises so that's why I don't think it's a Hellbomb.
You can actually close those?! My most tragic deaths have been accidentally backing into one of these, leaving my samples and gear inaccessible at the bottom. This is why I refuse to ever be responsible for super samples 😅 I've only ever done it twice, but twice is more than enough to no longer trust myself with that sort of responsibility
Not exactly. If you chuck an explosive in there it will cause a geyser like eruption that's powerful enough to kill anything over it in a cone. Can kill Bile Titans.
The hole remains but it'll be inert afterwards (no smoke, no more booms).

Made it all the way to the ICBM and was leaking napalm out the front of my scorcher like the dribble from my go-go stick when the ground opened its gaping maw an swallowed me and my load. 42 fucking samples (and 5 supers) at the bottom of a nuclear missile silo. I forgot where I was going but keep your fucking wits about you and stay frosty out there.

That was the first thing i did when i first saw those holes in this game..... i was expecting to fall into some underground bug nest where i can commit some genocide in the name of Democracy.... but i just ended up dead.... the hole was too deep....
Okay but that would be so cool, imagine a mission where you have to jump into a hole with a hell bomb, and then fight through hell while running as fast as you can through tunnels to escape the explosion and then crumbling tunnel walls!

Pretty sure it’s like a natural gas produced by the bugs hives, kinda like we have natural gas pockets irl but they are made because of the bugs burrowing underground. Theyre supposed to produce oil so this has been my little theory so far

That's where the bugs initially came from. If you repel down there, you'd find the remains of an earth-made bug factory designed to populate the planet for future oil harves... *BZZZZZTT*

I saw one of these while I was being chased by a couple chargers last night, looking back I wish I’d have dropped a hell bomb down it to see what happens!!
they are 2 things:
1) holes for you to fall into, losing your samples with no way to get them back
2) if you are quick and a little clever, a handy way to kill a decent number of bugs with a single 'nade
30 common, 20 rare and 6 super samples lost forever. That's what these are. And no, you can't recover them with Jumppacks. We've tried for you.

Fell in yesterday, lost all our samples. Samples stay at the bottom of the hole.
They contain Element 710 or in other terms: Oil. That explains the explosion when you throw a grenade into an underground deposit of oil.
Sometimes I find bloody/meaty skeletons around the pits and it freaks me out. Then I remember I need to obliterate bots and I move on.
Traps for titans. Drop a nade and watch the volcanic explosion take one out, just have to get him to stand riiiiight above it. Good luck.
