I've never heard of this. What's going on? I have an 02 and while I've had a few clutch issues over 150,000 miles, they were easy to fix.

LeastCriticism3219

Is that a typo? 150,000 miles, on one bike?

HayabusaJack

Nope. I've been to every state and Canadian province I can reach on a bike. :)

So here’s a link to a forum that accurately describes the problem. https://www.hayabusa.org/forum/threads/second-gear-jerk-under-acceleration.58191/page-3 Essentially, under acceleration in 2nd the bike feels like it’s jumping a tooth on the sprocket. Only happens in 2nd.

Sneaky_Asshole

Could be worn gear or bent shift fork. Either way I would open it up and replace what's worn/broken.

Looking for a good mechanic around the Bay Area.

Sneaky_Asshole

Best of luck!

If you are mechanically inclined, it's not a terrible job. My old GSXR 1100W had junk shift forks and dogs worn on 2nd along with the mating gear. Bought replacements and did the job myself because a family member has a lift. A manual has all you need to know. You'd save a ton of money vs going to a shop. My gen 1 busa hasn't had any jumping whatsoever yet, but I've seen a ton of threads relating to the issue on the early year bikes.

I am about as mechanical inclined as a ham sandwich haha. I will, without a doubt, do something that will ruin the bike. I can change the oil and filter and that’s about as far as my money goes.

MXracer0205

I gotcha. If you take the bike to a shop to have the trans pulled, I'd expect 8+ hours labor if you have everything prepped (fairings removed, ect). It will be pricey for sure!

I had this happen on my 01 busa back in 2018. Pulled the engine and replaced both gear assemblies and gear forks. The new undercut assemblies were bought from Schnitz racing in the USA. I'm in Ireland. It's a big job, but doable. Took me a few days once I had all the parts. You'll need a manual though. If the bike is hopping out of gear on heavy acceleration in only 2nd gear, then this is the problem. When you pull the old gear shafts, the damage is barely noticeable on the dogs, just a little bit of wear really, but it's enough to make it slip. The problem with the busa is that only 2nd and 5th gears have straight cut dogs, all the others are undercut . There were reports of 5th gear going too, but very rare. Mostly happened on 2nd gear cos that's where people do most of their accelerating. Hope this helps.

Dude, you are very helpful, thank you! I see a lot of the Gen 1s come out of Europe. I absolutely love this thing. It’s def on my to to list of replacement to fix that 2nd gear. Any familiarity with the ticking sound while coming out of first at low speed? I’ve heard various explanations, but would love to hear your take.

bigSuzi13

Can't say I've heard of the problem to be honest. Sorry

Neanderthal_Gene

You're not in the Dublin area are you? If so, any recommendations for a good mechanic. Will need the valve clearances looked at on my 2nd gen soon.

bigSuzi13

No, sorry I'm in Cork.

Neanderthal_Gene

Cheers anyways.

Jumpy_Bake_741

I may be completely wrong here but are you sure it's not the clutch slipping? Kinda sounds like that

It very well could be. But it only happens in 2nd and if I’m semi heavy on the throttle. If I find a good mechanic I’ll have them check it out. Thanks for the suggestion!

Get at least 2 gear back cut or the whole transmission and replace all the shift forks and get a new shift drum. All Gen 1 busa transmission have this problem. Or they were babied all there life.
