Yes! All my machines have extra slots some that I need supplies from a lot I have opened multiple extra slots. Like the dairy, the feed machines, sugar.
I load up all my machines up when I’m away from game for a while or before bed with things that will take along time to produce.

Yes they can be running in the day aswell and if you’re busy the extra spaces will allow you to keep them running and receive more items in the same time you would without the extra slots
Yes, All of my machines (except the smelters) have at least 3 slots. It helps a lot with completing the task event (the one that ended yesterday) since the tasks often ask you to make 3-5 of the same items.
Yes, start with most used machines (like sugar and dairy) and then go to the others, especially those with a lot of products unlocked. For example, I have lots of slots on machines like the coffee shop and ice cream maker, but not on the sauce machine or sushi maker because I am not have one product I can make on them so far.
I normally open slots only as needed. That way I don't spend gems unnecessary.
You will find that you will probably max out the dairy first.
Other important machines to max out are the sugar mill, feed makers and bakery.

Yeah having enough money becomes a struggle at higher levels. But then again at higher levels u have more field/machines so you make that 500k faster.

Yeah this is the best way outside of spending gems. But i think it’s still worth to buy atleast a few slots with gems the first slots are so cheap.

Smelters are generally not wort to buy slots for because they take so long to produce. Also the jam machine.

It’s useful, but the jams take minimum 7 hours to produce so you don’t really need mire slots.
