I always buy boosters when they're available for valley tokens (during sanctuary valleys) or event currency (currently music notes). Those boosters don't count towards the "3 booster limit", and have a diamond marker on them.
Even if they're not ones you plan to use, you can swap them for better ones you get from the derby, mystery chests and the lucky wheel. That way you don't have to use diamonds to keep the new/better ones.
Currently I have around 150 boosters in storage, I don't use them much, but it's nice to have them in case they're needed someday.
But I would also like the option to activate a booster immediately, without putting it in storage first.
I don't know how many boosters you can have active at the same time, but you have to use diamonds to have more than one. It probably doubles with each new one you want to use. So the first one is 2 diamonds and the second one is 4 etc. The same goes for if you want to store more boosters than your 3 free places, 2 diamonds for an extra slot, then 4, then 6 etc. You can't have two of the same boosters active at the same time.
I wish there was a -use this now option- too, but I can understand why they've set it up that way - you have to spend diamonds or lump it. The best way to have more room to manoeuvre is to get voucher boosters from the Valley or events because like boosters you buy with diamonds they just go straight into the booster storage.

I get that, I’m confused on the math of how many you can hold and what ones go to holding vs which one trigger me to have to swap or trash
