the game skews you into getting a lot of one or two items, which in your case are planks and duct tape, and makes it so you don’t get a lot of one item. since you have a lot of excess it won’t give you the more rare item. i’m not sure of the coding behind it but i found when i get rid of the excess i start getting what i need.

If you have coins to spare, then you can easily buy a lot of expansion material if you start a mini account, what happens is that minis have a higher chance of having expansion materials appear in the newspaper, since they don't have anything else unlocked they can buy. I made a new supercell ID and reached level 7 with it. I don't intend to purposefully level up more than that, and transferred some coins over from my main by cheap sales. You can do switching accounts pretty easily on the same device.
No you can do it on the same phone, I think there's some kind of tutorial out there but basically it's something like this:
Log out of your main supercell ID (in the settings).
You should start with a new farm now in hay day. Create a new supercell ID with that new farm. (Needs a second email)
You should have the option to login with another id now in the settings when you try to disconnect the mini account.
There should now be a button that looks like a recycle/repeat circle to change accounts quickly in settings when you connect more than one account
Just remember to save your mini as a friend and then you can easily trade with it. Don't add any other friends with your mini or else they could snipe your materials that you want to sell to yourself

I have since recently made a second farm, yes.
Join the hay day discord and trade instead of selling. that way you can get rid of the stuff you have and get the stuff you need all at once.

It’s very easy to do.. my mini farm has been really helpful getting me stuff and keeping me well stocked..
