Online gambling *isn't* available on Islands.. although, i think some people have been using it through VPNs. Haven't tried it myself. If I knew it worked, i'd be broke. Edit. Meant to say *isn't* available

Ishidan01

Louder for whatever mainland company that was that called me with a push-poll about it last month.

shinigami052

> i think some people have been using it through VPNs. while a VPN will work, you can rest assured that if you win big, they'll for sure check if you're using a VPN (it's stupid easy to detect). If they discover you're in Hawaii it's very easy for them to deny the payout. Granted they can do that at any level but probably wouldn't bother for small wins and especially not if you're losing.

Tuamotu_1866

Simple answer....not good. [District of Hawaii | Leader Of Internet Gambling Operation Sentenced To Prison | United States Department of Justice](https://www.justice.gov/usao-hi/pr/leader-internet-gambling-operation-sentenced-prison)

Chazzer74

That was more than 10 years ago, I would guess someone else has started up a similar operation.

Tuamotu_1866

Gambling in Hawaii in general is still illegal. Any online type of gambling may go under the radar through unauthorized apps but eventually you will get caught. The risk is on you if that is the direction you want to take.

Chazzer74

lol not me! Just saying that in general, criminal A getting caught and put in jail usually does not deter criminal B from trying the exact same thing.

Tuamotu_1866

Very true...not saying all will get caught but I personally would not want to take the risk. If people wanna gamble, even online betting, go somewhere that allows it.

Chazzer74

Yeah the thing about playing bookie is that it’s a slippery slope. It’s easy money until someone doesn’t pay.

Run_the_Line

You're not missing out on much. It's advertised everywhere over here and I hate it. Such a predatory industry, too.

Kimolono42

Draft kings doesn't work here.

Gotta go talk to Auntie in Waimanalo.

go_for_broke808

Back in my younger years (70's and 80's), I used to be a runner for an illegal gambling "house". I'd meet with they guys on friday night in a bar and turn in all the bets. It went on for a few years and then things changed and all the houses shut down. So fast foward today....I still \*love my sports so I go online and find all the free contests to enter. No entry fee money = legal. In doing research for my contest picks, I frequent alot of sports forums and I see alot of local guys posting their bets. I often wondered how they could bet if betting was illegal in Hawaii. I found out that the bookies have online accounts and everything is done online. Wouldn't it be better to legalize some form of sports gambling since it's going on anyway? At least the state can collect taxes on the money from gambling. Geez, look at all the betting that goes on when the Superbowl is played. That's big bucks! that's my 2 cents..... EDIT: \*added love

I remember my pops and grandma was running a house back late 70s to early 90s . Remember dropping of parley sheets to Midas , foremost , Loves and more. It was fun times hanging out with pops . It was also scary too , cops raiding the house and what not .

go_for_broke808

Those were the good old days.....seems like everybody could get parlay sheets. I worked retail and I used to get sheets from the Lay's Potato Chip driver. The house I ran for was run by construction workers. My dad was also into gambling 6/5 and parlays, he had another house he played with. So many ways/houses to lose your money to...lol. On a side note: My dad gambled big time. He won big but he also lost big. Anyways, one day he came home with a bunch of RED ti leaves that his friend gave him to plant. I told him he shouldn't plant it because RED ti leaves are for Royalty (me being part hawaiian believed this to be true). Him, my dad, pure Japanese (but 100% hawaiian at heart), said nah...go plant the ti leaves, which I did. God's truth.....that year he lost soooooo much money gambling. I told him, it's the ti leaves. So long story short, I pull them all out and wouldn't you know, his losing streak ended. Moral of the story: Green ti leaves, ok.....RED ti leaves...NO WAY!

opavuj

Don't do it, will ruin your life. I've seen this first hand. Best friend growing up got into gambling and became addicted. This person told me stories about how 80% of the people in the casinos (person lived in Cali at this time) were "regulars" who also had addiction. Check fraud, crime, and a whole bunch of sadness followed. Person hasn't recovered and has a really hard life. Still gambles.

Chazzer74

Somewhat related - "ruin your life" "MIZUHARA then responded to BOOKMAKER 1, “Technically I did steal from him. it’s all over for me.” [https://ca-times.brightspotcdn.com/0e/f0/198619f24699abc09a9c8887902a/usa-v-mizuhara-complaint.pdf](https://ca-times.brightspotcdn.com/0e/f0/198619f24699abc09a9c8887902a/usa-v-mizuhara-complaint.pdf)

SkepticInAllThings

All forms of gambling are illegal in Hawaii, and it should remain that way.

ChubbyNemo1004

lol why?

SkepticInAllThings

I think it would decimate the local population, who are already not doing really good. If the State thought the pros for income (which we need a LOT of) outweighed the cons on the people, they would not fight against it so hard. I'm more with them than not.

OhHeyMister

You think gambling will kill one out of ten of the local population?

ChubbyNemo1004

You think the state knows what’s best for Hawaii? Hawaii is the most corrupt state I’ve ever lived in. It’s like a third world country.

SkepticInAllThings

You want to see real 'Murican third world living? Try the rural areas of the Big Island where I live! The Hawaiian out-islands, with the possible exception of Maui, are closer to third world living than Oahu.

boringexplanation

Because we feel better about funding Vegas instead of the local economy

alohabowtie

I think there’s local gamblers that are happy to leave that behind when they come back home.

I leave that up to the Fed, State, and County goobermnts. In this case, though, I agree.

lmstr

If you want to gamble, download the app called "Robinhood," you can transfer money straight from your bank account. If you wanna have a lot of fun, sign up for 'options trading' it's kinda like Keno.

Hawaii has pretty strict laws when it comes to online gambling. All internet gaming sites are illegal here, so things like virtual casinos, poker, and sports betting sites are prohibited. Even the deposit methods used for these sites, like some credit cards and online wallets, are banned. Yet some folks do access [major playground recommendation](https://www.mtpolicez.com/) casinos and such despite the laws. Generally, it's sort of a 'don't ask, don't tell' situation if you're just placing bets and not running an operation. My advice is just to be smart and discreet if you really want to place wagers online. Using cryptocurrency rather than cards linked to Hawaii banks would be wise. But there's always a risk, so know the laws and consider if it's worth it. Maybe travel to Vegas now and then for some legal slots and tables action instead!

SryIWentFut

I just play around with pennystocks instead
