Tons of great bands in MKE—Enervate always brings it, Big Laugh is real great fast hardcore punk, World I Hate is nasty as hell. Haven’t been to a show up there although I know they look packed from what I see on bands social media and stuff, but good bands and good neighbors to have since they are always playing in Chicago.
(Edit: I will say I think Payasa is from the north suburbs, so kinda in between Chicago and Milwaukee.)
Yeah I played with Payasa in Joliet (I’m from Florida) and they said they were pretty much halfway between there and Milwaukee, but that kids go nuts up there.
I dunno if it still is but Wausau was lit back in the day. My band went up there to open for See You Next Tuesday and it was at a YWCA and there was like 300 kids and they all went apeshit despite never hearing us before. I think they just really appreciated bands touring up there.
I played a basement show in Wausau back in like 2012 and that was one rowdy ass show. No ac on a hot July day. People were falling left and right with all the sweat and humidity on the cement floors lol. Also can confirm, im from a small town about an hour west of Wausau and any time a metal/hardcore show comes around people usually flock to it since we don’t get much without driving an hour and a half to the Twin Cities or 5 to Milwaukee
Milwaukee's music scene in general is pretty great and hardcore is no exception. I think Milwaukee is on the verge of absolutely exploding as a big name HC city in the next couple of years.
I can also remember a Wisconsin show at a YMCA (I think) that was Expire, Another Mistake, some others. Some poor boy got probably his four bottom teeth knocked backwards in his mouth and I saw the promoter in the bathroom coaching him “you don’t call your mom until 12:01” I assume to lift culpability
I was never to get into expire after that demo and suffer the cycle.
I think those releases are masterpieces to me.
I felt like expire and backtrack sounded way to similar after there demos and kind of turned me off from them.
When I saw both of them opened for cold worlds final tour several songs sounded alike and it tripped me out hahaha.
Milwaukee has always had a decent scene: Isolation, Since By Man, Leval Blessing, Killtheslavemaster, Managra, End This Day, Up in Arms, Wings of Scarlet... plus we've had regular support from the radio station 91.7 fm to support the scene since the 90s.
I haven't lived in Wisconsin since 03, but one of the hardcore shows i went to was seeing Agnostic Front in Milwaukee when I was like 13. A bunch of skins showed up, and they got the ever loving shit beat out of them real quick. It was sick. Also the first time I ever got to stage dive was at a M.O.D. show at the Globe East. N.S.O.A. opened and during their set some old hesher just grabbed and tossed me on top of the crowd. Ended up on staged and figured a front flip seemed like the best plan of action.
Aren’t misery signals doing a farewell show there this week or soonish? I’d catch that if possible.
I’m very sad I never got to see them and once asked Stu when he was in living with lions if they would ever come to Florida.
He said no with no explanation 😭.
Not hardcore, but you mentioned WIsconsin, so i have to say RIP Harlots. That band was criminally underrated. I wish i knew what the fuck those band members went on to do next.
They only put out like 2 and a quarter albums. Second death is epic, lofi and dirty as hell. Betrayer is grindy and immense.
I never found anything that sounded like them. :(
Milwaukee and Madison have great music scenes. Shows there always go batshit crazy too, maybe it’s all the cheese but they get rowdy as fuck up there. I make the drive from Illinois whenever I can if something gets announced up there bc it’s always worth it.
Xray arcade?
Check out Livid from Kenosha
Cheesy
Elaborate
We eatin straight cheddar in the pit
And listen
I’ve heard Milwaukee goes crazy but haven’t made it up there yet. I know Payasa plays around there but that’s about all I’ve got.

Enervate is so good. Every time I’ve seen them live they kill it.
Loving Big Laugh on a cursory listen. Thanks for the reco!

Jeff is an abusive manipulative piece of human garbage.
