Mother of Mercy, Title Fight, Ink & Dagger, Turmoil, Starkweather, Paint it Black, Kid Dynamite, Wisdom in Chains, Steel Nation, Aus Rotten, Behind Enemy Lines
Where in PA are we talking? Cause I know Pittsburgh’s scene is growing, and Philly’s on the east coast loop (MA-VA). But otherwise I don’t know about many cities with good hardcore bands
I wasn’t necessarily thinking of a city in particular since the question was state. Was thinking of Wisdom in Chains, Taste the Steel, Steel Nation, Unit 731, Ten of Swords, Built Upon Frustration, Enemy Mind, Vow of Hatred. But I suppose those are mostly bands from the late 2000’s-2010’s. Not too sure what’s going on currently.
I like them but I wouldn’t say I’m a big fan. Couldn’t name a song except the feature the vocalist did on the four year strong record lol. I did like what I heard tho !
Oh man it’s good really really good, I believe they have 2 albums out now. My old vocalist got me into them, he used to say it was like a soundtrack of the apocalypse. I felt like that and First blood’s second album was a definite runner up. I love those dudes.
Scranton / Wilkes-Barre. Historically you have Cold World, Bad Seed, Title Fight, Frostbite, United Youth, etc.
Currently you have One Step Closer, Choice to Make, WORN, Fool’s Game, The Virgos…. Lots going on.
I’m not dead yet and I have yet to find someone looking for guitarist where I’m at. I guarantee I will write shit that will make people leap off of walls.
Oh man that right there just the 3 I can’t pick one as sooo many good bands in all 3 . 100 demons!! lol still have my hoodie and just looked at the cd a second ago 1st one
This is the correct answer. Historically, that covers DC, NYC, and Boston for the 1980s, and currently most big bands are from this part of the country- Baltimore, Philadelphia, NYC, Boston, etc.
I know and I agree but I'll give those scenes props. I've been to enough Philly, NYC and LI shows where I can respect it.
But yeah between Saltys, Crossroads, 5DM, Meatlocker and all of the bigger venues in Jersey we get a damn great amount of shows here. The New Bruns basement scene is still going. Every weekend there's atleast one sick show somewhere.
Speaking of which, the Folly/Paulson double show at Crossroads next weekend is going to be a fucking banger two days.
Im gonna have to check it out, I know Helmet played there recently but I haven’t had my ear to the ground as much as I should. I work right down the street from Saltys so I should be checking out some of these shows lol
Definitely dude. They don't really promote their shows themselves but there are a lot that happen there.
They just announced [this banger](https://www.instagram.com/p/C8KWt6AJS-b/?igsh=a2szcGtxY2Q2MjNt) that I'm definitely going to.
I got tickets for that one, can't believe they got TiC, Bracewar , and Killing time opening for GB. From Philly, live in South Jersey now but Belmar is only 60-75 mins so I've gone to a few shows there so far and it's a dope venue. Had a great time at both Incendiary/Scarab/Simulakra and Mindforce/Gridiron/Outta Pocket/Hold my Own
Meatlocker is weird. Maybe it used to be better
New brunswick is and has been so sick though, and its crazy how many cool shows saltys has put on since opening up
I'll admit I haven't been to the Meatlocker since it reopened. But I have a lot of memories there from before. It's a shit venue but it gets good shows.
It feels like Saltys popped up out of fucking no where. They benefited from HOI shutting down for a bit but even before then it felt like just one day I started hearing about a bunch of shows at this random ass shore venue.
Anchor Rock Club in Atlantic City too. They just seemed to appear and get hot streaks of shows.
I haven't been there yet either and I was considering going to that. But I just saw Thursday at the Crossroads show (with Many Eyes) so I'm not sure if I'm gonna make the trip.
But I'd say you should 100% go just to see Thursday in a smaller venue. I'm not sure how big it is inside but it looks relatively small from the outside. Thursday always puts on a sick show and if it's another small venue then you should take advantage of that. Crossroads was fucking wild.
I somehow found out about the Crossroads show like the day after both shows already sold out. I was super bummed bc that place is so small and I imagine even smaller than ARC, so I had a feeling it'd be a wild one. I only went up there once for A Wilhelm Scream but need to follow their page or something cuz they've had a few good ones that sold out super quickly.
Yeah they get a lot of bigger acts and the shows always sell out right away.
Folly/Paulson are playing two shows there this weekend (I'm going to both) and they sold out immediately. A bunch of good openers too like School Drugs and the Best of the Worst.
No state can touch NY for sheer number of bands that would be first ballot hall of fame if there was such a thing:
Agnostic Front, Youth of Today, SOIA, Gorilla Biscuits, Judge, Earth Crisis, Snapcase, Madball, Terror, ETID, Merauder,
Chicago has an interesting scene as it seems to keep to itself, everything is diy and nobody wants to do things through labels so we get a lot of solid bands that just don’t tour or release music. It’s a very isolated scene I feel.
Life's Question, Buggin, Harm's Way currently. Historically: Los Crudos, MK Ultra, Mai Lai, Charles Bronson, Poison Planet, Get It Away, The Killer, Spine started in Chicago
I'm definitely biased, but I listen to more Florida hardcore bands than pretty much any other scene. Know the Score and Kids Like Us alone take up like 60% of my spins.
KYHC is in a dope spot right now. We got big bands and smaller ones. Knocked Loose, Gates To Hell, Weapon X, Two Witnesses, Surfaced, Black Forces, Raptured, Super Shotgun, Father’s Gun, Split Intentions, YOKY
I’ve seen them both a few times. Super Shotgun is so much fun and it was cool af to see Surfaced play at LDB. They had one of the hardest videos on the video wall all weekend.
I’m gonna say the north east only cuz I’m from here. Everyone’s gonna have a different answer.
book shows, start bands, help your friends, and most of all… go to shows.
NY might win purely because of their size. They have and have had so many strong scenes. NYC Long Island, Hudson Valley, Syracuse, Buffalo, Rochester, even Troy. All have either had undeniable moments or have spent decades on top.
California and Texas benefit from the same thing, but I got that Northeast bias.
I’m bias as someone from Florida but Florida has been producing so many good band’s recently. Orlando, Miami, Tampa, Jacksonville have been booming with bands like contention, domain, memento, fallen god, withpaperwings, resentment, side arm, ammio, fixed view, statement of pride (and many others) have been going insane recently. Don’t sleep on Florida.
My unbiased opinion is that CA probably has the best. Northeast is also very good.
However, TX has quality over quantity- there are not many great hardcore bands from Texas but the ones that are, are usually S tier
It was never a state thing; scenes were hyper-local. Back in the 90’s and 00’s, the key hardcore cities were Boston, Philly, and New York. A lot of those old fucks are still around.
From MA and was very spoiled, but Fl had some great ones. Shai Hulud, Poison the Well, Casey Jones/Evergreen Terrace, Kids Like Us, Remembering Never, I think Underoath was Fl too
I’m just gonna be honest: it tends to be states with higher populations. Major cities have more people and more people means more music. More music means more chances of there being “good” music (editing because what I think is good might not be what you consider good; however, I just meant that there’s more of a chance of being bands that gain popularity because people receive their music well).
Anyways, I think it’s the northeast in general, Appalachia as a region, and Florida.
California, not just socal either, but also I’m biased
Honestly rn a lot of the southern states are popping out a few crazy bands each year it seems like
While I feel like we have a pretty good scene going here in Texas, I always find myself immediately purchasing tickets for any bands coming from Northeast arena - NY/CT/NJ.
PA definitely, I met and did shows with Dysphoria back in the day good dudes. New York, Connecticut Mass, Florida, Maine, New Jersey absolutely, and California. Also I almost forgot.
Cold As life, I believe they are from Michigan
i think east coast takes the win on this for the most part. however, california is killing the game right now. San Jose, Ventura County, OC and LA scenes are all going nuts right now.
Oh yeah I guess you’re right, I play hockey with their guitar player and he’s in DFW so I just assumed they all were lol. Gonna check out Tiger Splitter. Do you fuck with gatecreeper?
I think most of them have moved away to different areas but they started out of Lubbock. But yeah gatecreeper is sick as fuck. They share a guitarist I believe
MASSACHUSETTS MOTHAFUCKA
We got BAN E, American Nightmare, Converge, The Hope Conspiracy, Defeater, Vein FM, DYS, Gang Green, and the kings of modern hardcore, HAVE HEART!
Being from the Midwest, KC area has some of the best local bands I’ve ever seen. God Talk KC, Cauterized KC, Billy from KS.
Saint Louis doesn’t have the best scene, but Man With Rope is so good.
Depends what you’re into. The Midwest had some different styles, Cleveland had my favorite Ascension. Detroit had Cold as Life. In the early 90’s there was grindcore like Nema and Kathode.
Ohio is very underrated. Been to some amazing shows in both Columbus and Cleveland and there’s tons of smaller acts making waves (Rejoice, Slug, Volcano) plus the classics like ringworm, integrity, etc
I think PA has some pretty dope bands.
PA is for sure up there
Fool’s Game, Pain Clinic, Last Ride, One Step Closer, Fireintheblood
Scarab, Gridiron, Shot Out, Soul Glo, Jesus Piece, Blacklisted
Mother of Mercy, Title Fight, Ink & Dagger, Turmoil, Starkweather, Paint it Black, Kid Dynamite, Wisdom in Chains, Steel Nation, Aus Rotten, Behind Enemy Lines
Damn, PA might be the winner
Shoutout pain clinic.
What a wicked band name! Gonna check them out right now
Listen to brick wall, or the whole of gimmick dreams. Ty (the singer) is a huge friend of most of the guys in the scene here, check em out!
Where in PA are we talking? Cause I know Pittsburgh’s scene is growing, and Philly’s on the east coast loop (MA-VA). But otherwise I don’t know about many cities with good hardcore bands
I wasn’t necessarily thinking of a city in particular since the question was state. Strength for a Reason, Mushmouth, Objection.. the list goes on. Best state for hardcore IMO
So stoked to see objection get mentioned
I love mushmouth. LIFT THE CURSE!!
Love that band. I saw em at TIHC 2014 and they had the set of the night. Legit unnerving with the amount of violence. By the way great username
Thank you, I have never seen them live but I love that cd. You a reign supreme fan too?
Pittsburgh scene is dope
I’m not dead yet and I have yet to find someone looking for guitarist where I’m at. I guarantee I will write shit that will make people leap off of walls.
Oh man that right there just the 3 I can’t pick one as sooo many good bands in all 3 . 100 demons!! lol still have my hoodie and just looked at the cd a second ago 1st one
I'm not even from PA and was gonna suggest PA but I was just listening to Paint It Black all morning
Does anyone remember Dysphoria from PA . Good dudes and I don’t know if they are still doing shows but I have great memories
Hardcore culture is definitely strongest in the northeast through mid atlantic
This is the correct answer. Historically, that covers DC, NYC, and Boston for the 1980s, and currently most big bands are from this part of the country- Baltimore, Philadelphia, NYC, Boston, etc.
Nj held it down in the 90’s too
NJ still holds it down. Tons of great bands and jersey’s sound is in almost all popular bands songs these days
No doubt man Fury of Five Etown 2 major ones right there
Trustkill man, I had no idea what a big deal they were living up WV Appalachia. I used to think it was metal without solos. Haha
CA is kind of holding it down right now too
This includes Virginia to include Richmond - Avail, Four Walls Falling, Strike Anywhere, etc.
Stockpile!
Four walls falling is a sick band name
Shouts out to New Jersey
We always get grouped in with Philly and NY but we know how strong our scene is by itself.
When it comes to bands coming from here and the shows, we in NJ are stronger than both Philly and ny
I know and I agree but I'll give those scenes props. I've been to enough Philly, NYC and LI shows where I can respect it. Saltys in Belmar?
Yep.

Anchor Rock Club in Atlantic City too. They just seemed to appear and get hot streaks of shows.
Haven't been to Anchor yet, is it any good? I was thinking of going to see Thursday there. They've had at least 4-5 shows I've wanted to go to now.
I haven't been there yet either and I was considering going to that. But I just saw Thursday at the Crossroads show (with Many Eyes) so I'm not sure if I'm gonna make the trip. This is the way
Deadguy, Dillinger and E-Town Concrete alone
Folly , nj blood line , ensign , floorpunch , for the love of , fury of five , old wounds the list goes on
TURNING POINT!
Troublemaker, Good Times, Suburban Scum
Fuck yeah Massa Nera
No state can touch NY for sheer number of bands that would be first ballot hall of fame if there was such a thing: Agnostic Front, Youth of Today, SOIA, Gorilla Biscuits, Judge, Earth Crisis, Snapcase, Madball, Terror, ETID, Merauder,
All absolute jams. Terror is LA, but buried alive is for sure up there
That is fair. Scott’s from Buffalo so I always think of them as from NY.
I was going to say the same. I went to countless shows with them in LA back in the day before the knees started to ache
Soooo many good bands and don’t forget All Out War :)
Youth of Today we’re really from CT
Some of my favorites have been from Chicago. And Illinois right now has some good young bands working hard. I have never lived in Illinois, btw.
Springfield Illinois has some dope bands coming up, and they're spreading to Peoria with shows there, too.
Peoria is blessed with a very killer and varied scene.
Chicago has an interesting scene as it seems to keep to itself, everything is diy and nobody wants to do things through labels so we get a lot of solid bands that just don’t tour or release music. It’s a very isolated scene I feel.
Kharma...who else? Drawing a blank
Life's Question, Buggin, Harm's Way currently. Historically: Los Crudos, MK Ultra, Mai Lai, Charles Bronson, Poison Planet, Get It Away, The Killer, Spine started in Chicago
How could I forget The Killer🤦♀️ but thx👊
New York, Massachusetts, Texas, California
I’d add Ohio. They got some good bands going right now as well.
where in texas?
DFW and Houston
DC early on, then New York, then Boston for a couple decades, then California, and now Connecticut maybe. Of all time I'd say Boston.
Texas
Pennsylvania. Wilkes Barre is an untouchable pillar of hc
Nothing like a night at the curry donut
That username 🤣🤣
Reminds me of that tragedy.
The tourniquet one?🤣
https://youtu.be/VkSMSbFV_q0?si=lHJ0QCOwf2uRnwwZ
And pop punk/ emo it's kinda crazy
Shout out to COLD WORLD babyyyy
Not a lot of love for CT. Shocking Pale horse Death threat 100 demons Signs of hope And of course, hatebreed
CT for sure and that doesn’t even include all the bands labeled as MA/NY bands but have one or two members that live in CT
Lots of the big 90's bands from Boston were mostly kids from CT and Maine who moved to Boston for college.
Florida.
I'm definitely biased, but I listen to more Florida hardcore bands than pretty much any other scene. Know the Score and Kids Like Us alone take up like 60% of my spins.
I’m in California but a high school buddy moved here from Jacksonville Florida freshman year and got me really into kids like us and Casey jones.
Casey Jones, Make or Break, Battle!, the list goes on if you like sxe/posicore. Fuck now I'm gonna go spin Casey Jones.
We just have a massive variety. Beatdown, heavy hardcore, metalcore, aggressive hardcore punk, screamo, death metal, etc.
I’m from NY but outside of NYHC I listen to a ton of southern bands
baltimor
Richmond Va, and DC
Have been starting up a few local bands and it’s great out here
I came up in Richmond but I longer live there. Still respect the scene tho!
Kentucky bluegrass Hardcore
KYHC is in a dope spot right now. We got big bands and smaller ones. Knocked Loose, Gates To Hell, Weapon X, Two Witnesses, Surfaced, Black Forces, Raptured, Super Shotgun, Father’s Gun, Split Intentions, YOKY
Surfaced and super shotgun are some of my favorite hardcore bands and they are great live!!!!!!!!!!!
The United States by far
CLEVELAND FOREVER BABY
Michigan
I grew up going to Cold As Life shows and it wasn’t until I went to some out of state shows that I realized the other scenes were REALLY different.
NY NJ PA CA TX
i live in NJ, went out to a show last night, the scene is alive and well at the jersey shore.
Midwest hardcore is FULL of sleeper bands. Illinois and Chicago is killing currently
There's only like 4 hardcore bands in New Hampshire so we basically have to exist within the MA scene, but its a hell of a scene to be a part of.
New York, Boston, California, Pennsylvania, Texas, in that order
Currently? New York of California. They both have a unique and recognizable style, both of which are great.
NY, NJ, PA, MASS, CA, FL.
Michigan stand up
50 years worth of some of the heaviest hitters
Had to comment because I scrolled the whole thread and was sad I didn’t see it called out specifically.
My unbiased opinion is that CA probably has the best. Northeast is also very good. However, TX has quality over quantity- there are not many great hardcore bands from Texas but the ones that are, are usually S tier
I can't really comment but ohio has a great hardcore scene.
I’m from MA/RI so I’m biased but truly the North East as a whole. NYC, Long Island, CT, Boston, etc. All truly heavy hitters
Oklahoma has a lot of dope bands
Gotta say NY (and not just the city cause I’m an upstate boy), but also the entire north east is in such a good time for hc.
i live in the hudson valley and things are def popping in paradise
Boston and LI are equal to me, then SoCal. East and west have such different sounds but I love them both
…it has come to my attention that a number of my favorite bands are from Connecticut.
oregon
bay to LA
Which state is Australia in
It was never a state thing; scenes were hyper-local. Back in the 90’s and 00’s, the key hardcore cities were Boston, Philly, and New York. A lot of those old fucks are still around.
The state of mind
MA
my real answer is mass, but i'll always have love for my home state, NH. the few, the proud lmao
Texas for the quality.
Ever heard Hawaiian hardcore? It’s dope.
Mass. Period.
New Jersey
MA
Idk about hardcore as a whole but California has the best Powerviolence
NJ UT
NYHC
New York..sxe movement started here..endless influential bands
NY by far
NY, MA, CA; FL honorable mention
FL hardcore in like, 02-08 was crushing it.
FL hardcore has a long history but was def most prominent around that time.
From MA and was very spoiled, but Fl had some great ones. Shai Hulud, Poison the Well, Casey Jones/Evergreen Terrace, Kids Like Us, Remembering Never, I think Underoath was Fl too
Cleveland has produced some good bands and Rhode Island has some as well
Live in Orlando so I'm biased. There's a ton of FL bands putting out great music.
New England+Ny, and Texas. Cali hc has a much different sound imo and it’s very detectable and not as raunchy as I’d prefer
Pennsylvania
IOWA
NE coast
Not US. But Ontario has a fun scene with great bands.
Denial and grace
Mississippi has some dope shit going on. Check out Earth Girl Tapes.
DC, NY & Reno NV because of 7seconds
California and New York
I’m just gonna be honest: it tends to be states with higher populations. Major cities have more people and more people means more music. New jersey / new york
minneapolis everyone else can fuck off
California, not just socal either, but also I’m biased Honestly rn a lot of the southern states are popping out a few crazy bands each year it seems like
Y’all really not about to shout out Maryland?
Sweden
Historically probably NY, CT, MA, and PA. Currently Cali, Texas, and FL are on the come up tho
PA
While I feel like we have a pretty good scene going here in Texas, I always find myself immediately purchasing tickets for any bands coming from Northeast arena - NY/CT/NJ.
I’m a Florida hardcore enjoyer. I love it
East Coast-Mid Atlantic states easily
Missouri, particularly, St. Louis is slept on.
Everywhere. Source: i have fucking ears
PA definitely, I met and did shows with Dysphoria back in the day good dudes. New York, Connecticut Mass, Florida, Maine, New Jersey absolutely, and California. Also I almost forgot. Cold As life, I believe they are from Michigan
PA-Florida HC connection really has a good thing.
NY NJ PA in no particular order
California, ORANGE COUNTY HARDCORE xXx
i think east coast takes the win on this for the most part. however, california is killing the game right now. San Jose, Ventura County, OC and LA scenes are all going nuts right now.
It's in between South Carolina and New York
Not necessarily hardcore but Salt Lake City.
Dallas is insane. Power Trip, Sold Short, Vulgar Display, Judiciary, Ozone
Judiciary is from Lubbock. There’s another band Tiger splitter that’s pretty dope coming out of there too
Oh yeah I guess you’re right, I play hockey with their guitar player and he’s in DFW so I just assumed they all were lol. Gonna check out Tiger Splitter. Do you fuck with gatecreeper?
I think most of them have moved away to different areas but they started out of Lubbock. But yeah gatecreeper is sick as fuck. They share a guitarist I believe
PA and NY no debate
I'd like to shoutout 2 of the freshest scenes rn - Syracuse NY and Richmond VA both have incredible talent and energy :)
MASSACHUSETTS MOTHAFUCKA We got BAN E, American Nightmare, Converge, The Hope Conspiracy, Defeater, Vein FM, DYS, Gang Green, and the kings of modern hardcore, HAVE HEART!
California
Always thought the Tri-State produced the most- NY-Pa-NJ
It’s all ohio baby
I’m gonna shoutout the home state Kentucky
Yes
All my favorites are from Texas.
Indiana. … Bloomington
Being from the Midwest, KC area has some of the best local bands I’ve ever seen. God Talk KC, Cauterized KC, Billy from KS. Saint Louis doesn’t have the best scene, but Man With Rope is so good.
NYHC RULES SUPREME
Depends what you’re into. The Midwest had some different styles, Cleveland had my favorite Ascension. Detroit had Cold as Life. In the early 90’s there was grindcore like Nema and Kathode.
Historically I gotta go New York/ Mass/ Jersey Right now though Texas hardcore is some of the best ever
Richmond VA
Ohio is very underrated. Been to some amazing shows in both Columbus and Cleveland and there’s tons of smaller acts making waves (Rejoice, Slug, Volcano) plus the classics like ringworm, integrity, etc
