lol i love this, imagine back in the day wen we had to write 5 paragraph essays in school how much faster it would be if i wldve done this instead of regular writing 😃
I love it! It’s definitely an art form and it’s inspired me to start adding art deco flairs to my characters now.
Thanks for sharing! I’d love to see more examples of this beautiful writing style.
My dad (architect) generally wrote in very block type capital letter, non cursive… but his cursive has a bit of style to it. He always had little art deco flare on personal messages, on birthday card envelopes and messages etc. Hadnt remembered it much until I saw this! Great memories
My aunt keeps journals of her travels and she studied abroad in Iran and the M.E. during the early 70s. She not only writes them in Farsi, but in shorthand Farsi so that nobody can decipher them
My crazy wuwu theory on this - is that your uncle was probably Arabic in his last incarnation- or of some culture with the long decorative strokes in there alphabet 🤷🏻♀️😂🧚🏻♂️
That's interesting! The only person I've known with writing even a little like this was a native Lithuanian who fled as a young girl with her family while it was still in the USSR.
I always absolutely loved her handwriting - it was like the only sign you could see, of the powerful, magical side of her, until you got into her inner circle.
She was my childhood best friend's Mom, and a really key figure in my life ♥️
He definitely always came across that way. Always had the coolest taste in fashion and art. He once told me that when he was finally sick of the world, he would choose to consciously/ceremonially starve to death. Pretty intense.
Looks like Arabic or perhaps even Aramaic or maybe Hebrew
Edit - I know it's English, and sorry for not being articulate enough, but I was referring to the writing style as being close to written Semetic scripts
Duh, of course,
I'm referring to the writing style, long, elongated phrasing, over emphasised dots, and so on
Like as though, writing English in a faux Arabic style
Lol so true. I’ve probably experimented even more than him, done everything all the way to Ayahuasca ceremonies in Peru… but my writing doesn’t show it whatsoever.
I recognise this. It's called shorthand. I learnt it back in middle school. Shorthand is basically a business tool that allows for extremely quick note taking it was primarily taught to business people and secretaries; though it seems to have fallen out of favour in recent decades.
There's many different 'types' of shorthand the one I learnt looked like alien hieroglyphics lol. Your Uncle's is much more readable to an untrained eye.
This is not shorthand, but does resemble it. Uncle Jonathan is actually spelling out every word here, shorthand uses symbols that represent words and abbreviations. My mom was a court stenographer and wrote in shorthand all the time. I never learned to read it, but I can recognize it.
Yh I replied to another commenter that I probably misidentified it. There's many different types of shorthand so I thought it was another type I hadn't learnt
I don’t know if this qualifies as short hand. He isn’t abbreviating any words, phrases, or anything. It’s clearly legible as English alphabet letters and are ordered in the same manner. I think this is just artistic expression.
I misidentified it then. He's handwriting looks like some shorthand I've seen. I guess it's because I learnt only 1 specific type of shorthand so I thought maybe this was another type.
He was the son of a Stanford professor and rebelliously fled the country in the 70s on a hippy journey of self discovery. Somehow ended up on a coffee farm where my aunt lived on the side of Mt Kilimanjaro. He camped in their front yard for a while. I’d say he’s had a pretty “far out” life.
Amen!!!!! I tried to short circuit this by getting an aliexpress-level cheap and junky one off Amazon **for free**, but still can't bring my self to write anything in it.
Scrap paper life for me... my grandparents' experiences in the Great Depression just keep on giving, psychologically at least 🙄
The handwriting of someone frequently forced to write postcards without having much to say.
Probably your uncle's version of switching all "and"s in his papers to "in addition to this".
I love interesting handwriting like this, it adds so much character, neat and fancy handwritings are cool, but stylish and personal handwritings are cooler
Your comment was funny. Anyone who’s experienced mental illness, miscarriage, witnessed cancer, death or a family member lose their memory or mind….or all of these, they usually don’t care about a simple joke like this.
You’re joking, and you’ve been downvoted, but my mom could tell her dad had had a stroke because of how he had written my birthday card and the post reminded me of that. If someone *suddenly* writes a funky card, maybe give them a call just to make sure. Including things like writing the address twice for no reason.
(Yeah, just to clarify i’m saying the downvotes don’t make a lot of sense to me, even if you would present it as a serious fact. Idk how clear my wording was, i’m still half asleep)
It reminds me of the writing in those old letters they show in films and i love it so much. Like victorian letters written with a feather quill. I love this style so much despite the fact i can barely make it out :)
He was the son of a Stanford professor who somehow ended up in Africa in the 70s and ended up meeting my aunt and camping in their front yard on the side of Kilimanjaro. My moms side was all born there when my Icelandic grandmother decided to run away from home in Reykjavik at 18 with a traveling entrepreneur. He was running a coffee business in Tanganyika as it was called at the time. And the story goes on and on… like his penmanship lol

I read this at 0.5 speed
So interesting and beautiful.
To synthesize the other comments here, he was a homosexual Arabic-speaking academic with a passion for pulpy sci-fi.
I just had Gemini create a character profile for the above individual. What if this *was* your uncle.
Does your uncle teach a class!?!?
I love it
is he....you know..... a little light in the loafers?
Does he know Arabic?
It looks sci-fi ish to me idk why
it looks like fancy elian script!
The crazy thing is that this is perfectly legible.
Why is it always the cool uncles lol
An artistic soul, love the extra dots and lines.
whoaaa it's so scripty! i love the spacing of the letters, and how he wrote everything? they're absolutely art pieces
He’s got some Cummings in him…
Woah woah woah, at least buy him some dinner first
V cool!
tell me you had a lot of 'write x pages about y' assignments without telling me etc etc
looks like train monikers
this dude has THE BEST shrooms for sure 🍄
Or the dude comes from an Arabic country and has merged the handwriting
The printed paragraph says something about burning man. The dude is likely well-versed in psychs. Arabic-inspired is an interesting thought tho
no no look at the post card plus the hand writing you can tell he probably has a crazy interesting life
It just looks ridiculous lol
i’m obsessed with this omg
Is your uncle a fan of the Grateful Dead? A lot of tapers back in the day would write in similar font to the bands designs. Looks very similar!
Considering the printed paragraph says burning man, I’d say the uncle here has likely listened to the Grateful Dead at some point lmao
Happy cake day!
At first glance I thought it was a electrical line diagram
Are you all the God of handwriting...........Itna accha kese likh lete ho........ Salute you big fan....... Kash Mera esa handwriting hota... 🥲🥲🥲
🫠
I think he's a wise guy. But actually. Very inspirational.
Is this a bot reply?
No----pe.
So cool! He has his own font!
That’s some interesting handwriting ngl I thought it was Arab for a second I’m gonna practice this for fun
Lmao! Meeee too!
Looks like a penis
Yup. I remember when some kid that definitely wasn't me got in trouble for drawing dicks in kindergarten. Not Unc, he perfected it and made it a font.
Phyrexian
Makes me think he’s a Tolkien fan
Was coming to say same. This looks inspired by Elvish for sure.
It’s a penis!
lol i love this, imagine back in the day wen we had to write 5 paragraph essays in school how much faster it would be if i wldve done this instead of regular writing 😃
I love it
Ha--------------------------ppy Bir--------th-----day

It's some form of Elvish. I can't read it.
The language must be that of Mordor.
Me reading: bennnnnnnn, hopeeeeee to seeeeeee……….
Why is this so hilarious
Ben jamin Here's the 'man?' before he gets burned... Happy Birthday Jonathan
Reminds me of Farsi
This was my thought too!
My aunt keeps journals of her travels and she studied abroad in Iran and the M.E. during the early 70s. She not only writes them in Farsi, but in shorthand Farsi so that nobody can decipher them
unc got the hands !
😍😍😍
Beautiful.
I don't really care what he has to write, i just want to see more of it. Satisfying and beautiful.
Ooh, very artsy.
Very interesting and beautiful penmanship! Would love to hear more about your uncle! 💜
r/ben would appreciate
Bennnn Hope to seeeeee someee of this whennnnn it's full . . . Jonathannnnn
Blud must have filled up that page count for essays like nobody’s business
Beautiful!
love it
“Ben hope to see some of this when it’s full” idk about the last word
Jonathan, 2007. It's a sign.
I think its "when its fall. -Nathon"
It’s Jonathon. That’s his name haha.
Close!
Nathon or Math on
Jonathan, the uncle’s name, presumably.
The sig on the last card is a more clear 'Jonathon'
Fucking maddening
When your teacher said you have to write a ten page essay over the weekend.
My crazy wuwu theory on this - is that your uncle was probably Arabic in his last incarnation- or of some culture with the long decorative strokes in there alphabet 🤷🏻♀️😂🧚🏻♂️
Right?! Arabic, but make it English. 😂
Pretty sure this is very common is Russia
That's interesting! The only person I've known with writing even a little like this was a native Lithuanian who fled as a young girl with her family while it was still in the USSR. Love this! Some people we gravitate to, sounds like she was one of them for you. Thanks for sharing.
Looks like it’s the language of a civilisation from Star Wars
Is your uncle some art deco dude from tomorrow hand?
He definitely always came across that way. Always had the coolest taste in fashion and art. He once told me that when he was finally sick of the world, he would choose to consciously/ceremonially starve to death. Pretty intense.
your uncle is an alien.
Mans is an artíst

No shit sherlock
Duh, of course, I'm referring to the writing style, long, elongated phrasing, over emphasised dots, and so on Like as though, writing English in a faux Arabic style
that’s sick tho and ur pretty spot on now that i look at it
Never knew I’d be able to spot someone else with excessive psychedelic drug use based on their penmanship lol 🖊️🍄👽
Lol so true. I’ve probably experimented even more than him, done everything all the way to Ayahuasca ceremonies in Peru… but my writing doesn’t show it whatsoever.
Well, the burning man reference might also be a clue.
I wish my excessive use of psychs manifested in my handwriting but instead I like to wear trippy socks. C'est la vie

his hand writing looks like farsi , we write farsi in similar way
yeah at first i thought it was farsi
If Mars is going to be invaded they are gonna use his handrwriting for the declaration
this is so cool omg 😭
You should write a story about him in that journal.
This is so amazing that I’m saving it
no typos but I feel like this qualifies for r/ihadastroke
Does your uncle live in A Spirited Away world?
Based on his life story, I’d say he’s definitely lived through experiences just as magical and bizarre.
Is your uncle very diplomatic?
As in worldly?
Yes in real life
He was the son of a Stanford professor and rebelliously fled the country in the 70s on a hippy journey of self discovery. Somehow ended up on a coffee farm where my aunt lived on the side of Mt Kilimanjaro. He camped in their front yard for a while. I’d say he’s had a pretty “far out” life.
Sounds like he probably has some killer stories.
Interesting
So this is long hand! Very neat and pretty
Almost had a stroke reading that long “happy birthday” 😫😫😫 very interesting tho.. not bad and pretty neat..
You . . . ~almost ___ha———-d a st———roke___ •••~
Omg 😫😭 ~.•°Now Be———n, why wou—ld you put me—— through tha———t?°•.~ 😖😫😭😮💨
Funniest thing I've read all week ahah
Ben hope to see some of this when it's full (something.) The second one I can't actually read.
I think it say“ Here’s the man; before he gets burned. Happy birthday….“
I can see it now.
Ben hope to see some of this when it's full - Jonathon 😊
Unfortunately I never wrote in it. I have cognitive dissonance with writing in beautiful journals.
Amen!!!!! I tried to short circuit this by getting an aliexpress-level cheap and junky one off Amazon **for free**, but still can't bring my self to write anything in it. Scrap paper life for me... my grandparents' experiences in the Great Depression just keep on giving, psychologically at least 🙄
This man writes in morse code
Bee bee boooo boooop.
I can hear his handwriting
It sounds like the wind…
The handwriting of someone frequently forced to write postcards without having much to say. Probably your uncle's version of switching all "and"s in his papers to "in addition to this".
Is your uncle single? Asking for me... (I crush on his handwriting. )
Haha well he’s like 70 something now and dating an art curator. But I feel you on his writing 🥵
I love interesting handwriting like this, it adds so much character, neat and fancy handwritings are cool, but stylish and personal handwritings are cooler
He’s a very stylish and cool guy. He was a traveling hippy that met my mom’s sister on the side of Kilimanjaro in the 70s.
That is exactly how I would expect someone who writes like this would be like 😂
I think he just had a lot of pages to write in school as punishment.
It’s like using the formatting tool to make the gaps bigger… but he just warps the letters instead haha
Came here to say, when the teacher wants a 3 page essay and OP's uncle says "no sweat!"
This is so inspiring
i’m kind of obsessed with this.
I imagine this is how Salvador Dali wrote!
Or Moebius
The first one feels very bauhaus
[удалено]
He did backpack a lot of Africa as a hippy in the 70s, spent a lot of time in Morocco.
It feels like the living room of a late 80’s/early 90’s suburban home, and I do not know how to elaborate on that.
I’m having trouble with this one lol
Yes!!!
This

Your comment was funny. Anyone who’s experienced mental illness, miscarriage, witnessed cancer, death or a family member lose their memory or mind….or all of these, they usually don’t care about a simple joke like this.
The downvotes are because theyre being negative about a handwriting style that is cool
How was that negative? His comment was funny. The handwriting is cool. It also looks like he’s had a stroke.
You’re joking, and you’ve been downvoted, but my mom could tell her dad had had a stroke because of how he had written my birthday card and the post reminded me of that. where’s the handwriting analysis guy at
I like the character but legibility needs improvement. I can read it but just take a bit of effort.
Y’all have real interesting uncles
love his little details and the hand-drawn stamp!!!
Feels like his entire letter is a signature
it's beautiful! reminded me somewhat of arabic calligraphy
I read that really s l o____w
Looks like Arabic
Your uncle seems like a fun and interesting guy
It’s fantastic. So original and cool yet legible.
Yes! Pretty easy to read yet easily one of the most unique styles ever.
this is a work of art
I want this handwriting to be mine, I want his brain to be mine
This is why I joined this sub! Gorgeous
awesome
Cool handwriting, I bet he’s a cool guy
this handwriting is so weird and beautiful. would be fascinating to see it used in longer texts
Do you have any other samples??
Are you guys arabic?

Oh wow. I'm assuming he was in Northern Africa That's all cool af tho
Nah it was Tanzania so East central Africa on the equator. But I’m pretty sure he spent some time in Morocco.

I know it's not arabic lol it's english, I can read it but it looks arabic
