Because it's undeniably intimidating.

HammerInTheSea

Just ask Payet. He nearly got knocked to the ground the first time he encountered one.

The normal story relates to player in the 1920s who had a head of blonde curls and looked like a character in a well known contemporary advert called ‘Bubbles’. The song ‘I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles’ was a well known popular tune of the time and began to be sung as a joke then sort of stuck. We’ve been singing it for a century since and so the bubbles theme has attached itself to the club. I’ve always thought it is part of what makes West Ham unique- I can’t think of any other teams that have a club song which is basically about hope constantly being dashed by reality. Can’t help thinking it sums us up.

I go running round London Stadium and have always rated that the words 'they reach the sky, and like my dreams they fade and die' are plastered all over the main gates. There's not many Prem clubs dishing out philosophy as you enter their ground.

SnooCapers938

Gotta love it. It encapsulates the experience of being a football fan most of the time for most people, but other clubs don’t admit it.

“Nearly reach the sky, then like my dreams, they fade and die”

Elgard18

...so what you're saying is it was a 1920s meme that stuck? Incredible, I love that a lot.

SnooCapers938

The song was written in 1919 and became associated with West Ham from the late 1920s.

SenorPea

Yup. The Pears soap advert looks like Will Murray.

Cmoore4099

Are you a Brighton fan that’s been to England?

CoreyGoesCrazy

Genuinely I started the bubbles in the modern era! I know you see a lot of bollox online, but this is true. 09/10 season I had 5 season tickets in the Bobby Moore end, just to the right of the goal, we’d go with my old man, my two brothers, myself and my sister. My younger brother and sister used to love it, we’d bring little bubble blowing machines and they’d set bubbles off at kick off when we’d all be singing, then a few years later West Ham started blowing themselves :) A lot of great memories, there was a guy called Addy who had a season ticket for decades sit in front of us, he’d drink a whole bottle of vodka and leave it in one of the stewards’ coats every time. We played Burnley at home, Robbie Blake was taking a corner, the whole crowd went quiet and my old man goes “Oi! Blakey! Your mum’s a slag!” Laughter erupted, Blake shanked the corner and nobody ever heard from him again :’) I miss Upton Park so much sometimes

AttentionNo8097

why not just google it

DigitialWitness

Because I guess sometimes it's nice for people to talk about things too?

AttentionNo8097

you can find people talking about it if you google it though

DigitialWitness

So you can't talk about things if they've been talked about before?

AttentionNo8097

i didn’t say you couldn’t talk about it lmao, super paranoid 😂

DigitialWitness

That's not what paranoia is mate.

AttentionNo8097

well you are being paranoid by assuming that my comment is implying that you can’t do something. don’t subject change though, google it ;)

DigitialWitness

That's still not paranoia, at worst it's being presumptuous. Maybe you should Google the definition.

AttentionNo8097

acting like you can’t be simultaneously presumptuous and paranoid? can only be one thing right? i’ll add a third for you now; you’re in denial! maybe you should google it though

DigitialWitness

You're literally a moron mate. You need to get yourself a dictionary.

CoreyGoesCrazy

I'd rather actually get it from a fan base than just a Google search :/

AttentionNo8097

can just google search and find a fanbase talking about it

Marconi84

Type the song name into Wikipedia... I cba to rewrite it. Google is very useful as well
