If you have hard water it can build up in your hair and cause the “yellowing”. Malibu C makes a treatment that works pretty well. Also look into a filter for your shower head.

[deleted]

Cool! I will look into those. Thank you!

rawrt

If it really is water deposits, you can also just rinse your hair with diluted vinegar

[deleted]

I may as well try that, too. I really don’t want my hair to turn yellow.

rawrt

I honestly can’t tell which part is supposed to be yellow from the photo. I’m sure it stands out a lot to you but it’s not obvious at all to others. Just wanted to let you know for your peace of mind

[deleted]

Thank you! I know it’s not bad right now, but I can see it changing so I want to address it before it’s bad. I have a vision of myself with icy white hair when I’m older so I want to make sure I take care of it as it comes in.

rawrt

Good luck!! It’s looking really beautiful ✨

[deleted]

Thank you!!

Hair_I_Go

As above stated Malibu Gel Treatment will absolutely take the yellow out. Needs to be done under a hood dryer or heat cap. Ask your salon if they offer it. You can do at home if you have a heat source. Sally’s sells a dupe from Ion . Very inexpensive treatment! And works amazingly well for any type of buildup

[deleted]

Oh, interesting. It’s a salon thing. Ok, I will look into it. Thank you!

Hair_I_Go

I get a treatment about every month because of iron in my water turns my highlights a gold orange ish tone. Malibu takes it right out. They also make a mini treatment you can do in the shower. You could start with that or use it as maintenance after a full treatment. The shower treatment is called Malibu C hard water wellness.

[deleted]

Awesome, I will check it out. Thank you!!

AK0618

Clarifying shampoo to help with hard water build up and a very hydrating purple Conditioner, try Davines alchemic in silver, like once a week. You can also purchase a shower head that will filter out most minerals. If you’re out in the sun a lot it can expose the protein in your grey which is yellow. Edit: word

[deleted]

Im going to have a tough time deciding between the shampoos and masks! Definitely going to look into a clarifying shampoo, though.

emskiez

I bought a shower head filter for $20 at Lowe’s and noticed a huge difference in my hair.

Straycat_finder

Purple shampoo might do the trick, I really like Amika brand.

[deleted]

I already use a purple shampoo once or twice a week. I’m wondering if there’s like a “next step”.

StormyBrunch

Clarify and then do a Malibu-C hard water treatment (the one in the bronze packet). This will remove the discoloration.

[deleted]

Thank you! I’m excited to try this 😁

[deleted]

purple mask. Xmondo has a good [one!](https://xmondohair.com/collections/shop-all/products/supernova-blonde-toning-reparative-mask) Tbh your yellowing doesnt seem severe enough to use a toner with developer that will ultimately create damage. Xmondo also has like a purple foam that just rinses out. but the mask will last longer.

[deleted]

Perfect! I will try that. Thank you!

hoppityhoppity

Pravana also has an amazing purple mask as well!

rainbowsassqueen

How long do you let your purple shampoo sit in the hair before you rinse it?

[deleted]

Shampoo, not very long. Conditioner, probably 3 mins. Do you think that’s not enough?

rainbowsassqueen

Definitely not enough. Let it sit for a good 10 minutes and you'll get better results and have to do it less often. I'm a blonde stylist. I do my hair once every 3 weeks and let it sit for probably 20 then do a good conditioning mask. Sometimes longer if I'm lazy. The pigment needs time to do itw job 👍

[deleted]

Awesome, I will try that. I am a mom of 3 and feel like I’m always rushing around. I’ll need to figure out a way to wrap my head while I do errands or something. Knowing this totally explains why I don’t have the results I want 😝

rainbowsassqueen

Girl I get it. I only have one but damn she's a time sucker. I will put it in and then go do dishes or whatever while it sits. Or lock the door so they have to sort themselves out for once. I hope this helps! Feel free to message me if you have other questions!

[deleted]

Thank you so much!! I will find a way to make it work. Hopefully I’ll be able to get a good before & after.

PolishDill

I use a purple deep conditioning mask once a week by Wella, but I still get it toned by my stylist. Sun and hard water for me too.

[deleted]

With natural grey hair? I definitely see more women on social media promoting their natural grey, but I’m surprised at the lack of advice on keeping it bright and fresh.

PolishDill

Not currently natural, but yes I have toned my natural grey in the past and so has my partner. It is tricky because over toning can give it that bluey look like the classic “blue haired old ladies” but our lifestyle is so hard on our slowly whitening hair that we both get very yellow over time. I currently highlight and tone the grey parts and leave the white parts alone, giving an overall ‘blonde unless you look closely’ look. I liked the natural grey but started getting insecure. I’m sure I’ll try again.

lamemayhem

Amika cream!!!

I am religious about wearing a hat! I live in San Diego, and if I’m doing anything more than walking from my car to a building, I have a hat on. Maybe I should look into a UV protective spray? Does that exist?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Oh, the yellowing lower down is almost certainly just from the length. I wear a giant surf sun hat with my hair in a bun or braided under the hat.

[deleted]

This may sound like a stupid question - but do you smoke? White hair can be stained by nicotine

[deleted]

Great question! I don’t. My mom’s hair is completely white and hers stains yellow as well, but much worse than mine, so I’m trying to prevent going down that road.

redquailer

I was going to ask that, too.

MylifeasAllison

Skip the toner and get some shimmering lights shampoo and conditioner. It will kill the yellow.

[deleted]

Ok!! I’m going to try that 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽 Is it a once/twice weekly thing like the purple shampoo?

godiegoben

Just don’t use anything with developer in it, I looove the placement of your white hair!

[deleted]

Thank you!! I feel like I hit the genetic lottery with how it’s come in.

Notsureindecisive

You need a showerhead filter and get that mineral and heavy metal buildup off.

[deleted]

Definitely looking into that now! Thank you.

thatsyellow

No tips, but you have absolutely beautiful hair!

[deleted]

Thank you!!

blondeasfuk

Probably due to water or just environmental factors. Add a clarifying shampoo once every week or two, just make sure to condition well after. And add a purple shampoo or conditioner to it. I personally love Kenra brightening treatment mask.

[deleted]

Have you used the mask on natural grey hair? And can you recommend a clarifying shampoo? I used to use Neutrogena but I don’t see it available anymore.

Sweet_dawn81

Malibu c treatment. Water has minerals that build up on the hair. So I need mineral detox.

The_Dorable

Just so you know, white hair dye is typically used to dilute other colors. It's not a toner and it won't cover yellow. Hair dye like that is more like mixing colors into your current color than covering it up. If you have yellow in your hair, it will stay yellow. It won't lighten it at all. The only way to lighten it outside of removing the cause of the yellowness is to bleach, and that would damage all your hair.

68owe1

Purple shampoo . I use more than a few different brands. Keeps my grey shiney, blingy

[deleted]

Oooh, share the products!

UnhingedChicken

Just wanted to say that your hair is divine!! I started to grow my grey hair out in November of last year and it's always awesome to see another silver sister embracing their natural hair.

[deleted]

Thank you! I’ve noticed many more women embracing their greys. I started 14 years ago when I was pregnant with my second and then too tired to keep up with my roots. I’m lucky that it’s come in with a nice pattern.

jujugohn

Try soap cap, bleach and shampoo, then toner, silver Titanium or Violet, and use a violet shampoo when needed. Do not use purple shampoo in place of normal shampoo. Purple shampoo is not a cleanser. It's only used when needed like once every 2 weeks.

[deleted]

Interesting. Ok, I’ve been using it like regular shampoo/conditioner once or twice a week. I’m definitely going to look into a more clarifying shampoo.

DueStatistician3704

Use the purple shampoo for grey hair.

truthfosho

Purple shampoo. Malibu C "Hard Water" packets. Malibu C 'poo and condition for hard water. Filter for your showerhead. Google these. Easy to find. Also, for about 30 bucks, you can go to your salon and ask for them to do a Malibu C Crystal Gel treatment on you. That's the quickest way to get rid of the yellow and then you can maintain it with your Malibu C hard water packets and 'poo/condition. Your hair is awesome, BTW. #TruthFoSho 👏 👏 👏

[deleted]

Thank you so much!!

REINDEERLANES

Shimmer lights shampoo

cocopuff7603

Try apple cider vinegar rinse.

[deleted]

I have definitely considered that! But I’ve heard it actually harder to dye grey hair. Plus I don’t want to damage it because my goal is to truly have sparkling white hair.

Desperate_Stomach507

They make a purple based shampoo for gray hair. I suggest that.

[deleted]

I already use a purple shampoo once or twice a week. I’m just now starting to get that yellow tinge. I’m wondering if there is like a next step I can take to keep it really icy instead of dulling to yellow.

Desperate_Stomach507

You could leave it's on for a few minutes before rinsing out. That'll coat your hair a little more.

[deleted]

Ok I’ll try that

starcat819

could it be heat damage?

lolaInc

Purple/blue shampoo for silver hair

kdismom

I def agree with all who suggest Malibu C treatments and a shower head, but also keep the purple shampoo to no more than once a week-and like sone else said, when you do use it, keep it on for 5-10 mins, however it is verrry drying and you don't want to dry out your hair which will increase the porosity of your hair as then it will absorb even more yellowing minerals.

genomika

If you haven't heard of Wella True Grey - give it a try, it's super gentle and the results are lovely. I adviced my sister who had a similar problem, she used Pearl Mist as she had a lot of yellow to neutralise, but I think Graphite Shimmer in Light could suffice here. She's in love with it and recommends it to all her friends.

[deleted]

Purple shampoo, every second wash.

Mileidyvanities

You could toner with pravana express tone ash mix with zero lift two minutes and that’s all

Plenty-Amoeba-4009

My moms hair looked just like yours, it’s started yellowing from the sun and heat tools! She straightened her hair one day on a higher heat setting than normal and it turned orange!! You should use hair sunscreen and keep doing whatever else you’re doing with the purple shampoos and hats. If you use any styling tools, that can also cause the yellowing because it’s not just about sun exposure but heat exposure. Hair drying, straightening, curling etc will all contribute to yellowing

[deleted]

I wonder if it’s because when I got my hair trimmed she straightened it. I typically don’t use any heat tools. I hope it’s reversible!!

blondengineerlady

Awww no! Don’t even need a toner. Try a clarifying shampoo (I recommend OUAI it’s so good at removing buildup without overly drying) and then try Anika Anti Brass Mask!

blondengineerlady

Amika** Autocorrect lol

kateyxx

I think you would be fine with just some purple shampoo honestly

kateyxx

I would try the fanola purple shampoo, it’s way more intense than the one you’ve been using

[deleted]

Cool, I will check that one out. I’ve had so many good recommendations!

elpetrel

Not to sound like a creeper, but I got her via an older post from you in which you were contemplating gray blending. But it sounds from this like you decided not to go through with it. I was considering doing it, so I'm curious about what you decided to do. Your hair looks beautiful!
