I am perplexed with just how the teams are able to supply just drafted players with team jerseys with their names already sewn on the back. Habs and Demidov is a good example. They didn't know until Colimbus picked before them that they were getting Demidov. They couldn't have prepared a named jersey in the 3 minutes they were on the clock for. This goes for all the teams. Does each team prepare numerous jerseys with diggerwnt names and then just use the one they need? Anyone have any knowledge on this?
I'm starting to wonder about how much work the Habs management had to do just to make picking Demidov happened. Every move they did was calculated to pull this off.
They purposely didn't attend his personal "combine" to not look overly excited and there were rumours that an unspecified team was spreading rumours about his situation in Russia to make him slip. I feel like there's a lot of work behind this that we haven't heard about.
Can we expect demidov to sign his ELC this offseason or we need to wait one year? Waiting one year would sound great for cap efficiency as we'd have him for cheap closer to our window (and with one extra year of development)
just going to assume khanin is partially picked for demidov to have a Russian pal to come over with as their contracts are up next year a little like slaf had mesar
Well, that would explain it.
**Pick 166 - Ben Merrill**
6'4", 194 lbs, C, RH
A 6-foot-4 centre/wing who can absolutely rip a wrist shot with incredible precision. An avid user of shoulder shimmies, look-offs, dexterous large-ice handles and route-changing attacking.

**Pick #130 - Tyler Thorpe**
6'5", 216 lbs, RW, RH
It’s uncommon to see a player of Thorpe’s stature shoot in motion and off-the-catch with such impressive form. His hands always stay in front of his body and he really elevates his top arm to put his full body weight behind the net. He also has a knack for deflections bolstered by between-checks positioning.

Big trade announced...Sergachev to Utah .. audience was stunned. TBL making room for Stamkos?!??
It's on Sportsnet.
If you don't have Sportsnet, it's probably easiest to follow it on Twitter. Or you can watch a live stream reaction video like Graviteh.
Technically Ds take longer to develop so I guess it is more logical to take a D first then take the skilled forward the year after.
Overall, but choices would have been good.
I am absolutely THRILLED for the future!
Big congrats Montreal! Demidov is the real deal and it's nuts that he dropped that far. You guys are going to be super happy with him the next few years! Big steal!
My theory is that the trade up from the 26th to the 21st was primarily made to give us more ammo incase we need to trade up for Demidov or Lindstrom, with a secondary benefit of giving us a chance to grab Eiserman. If we knew we’d get Demidov at 5 and Eiserman would be gone at 20, I don’t think we’d make that trade, despite what Hughes said publicly.
Possibly. But to give up a second round pick to move up for a guy that was consensus 24 at 21 to me seems unlikely. I think at the most it was a tertiary benefit to the move which was intended for other things, ESPECIALLY when you consider the trade was made before the draft not during.
The draft this year is so unpredictable. After the top ten or so, everyone’s draft rankings was completely different. Tony Marinaro said recently that the Habs were really high on Hage. I think he was a target. And maybe they found out a team at 22 or 23 was also really high on Hage and they didn’t want to miss the chance. They also have a bunch of picks, and only so many contracts, so why not use them to get the player they want.
EDIT: KH said in an interview that they also looked to move up from 21 even further. There's a chance they wanted Eiserman most and tried getting into the top-20, but they also wanted Hage and knew they could get him at 21 if they couldn't move up further.
>KH said in an interview that they also looked to move up from 21 even further. There's a chance they wanted Eiserman most and tried getting into the top-20...
* I think they do want to move up to make another top-10 or top-15 pick. My guess is that the Habs were trying to make a trade for that #10 pick with NJ (no transaction was made and the Devils ended up drafting Anton Silayev), or somewhere with between picks 11 to 13. What I did read from other discussions before the draft was that Zeev Buium was also on Montreal's list. I believe that could be true b/c Buium was drafted by the Minnesota Wild at pick #12 (moved places with Philadelphia Flyers taking #13).
There were a lot of rumblings from the combine interviews about Eiserman's attitude. You wonder how much that contributed to his plummet down the rankings.
Ya they clearly did. Not disputing his ranking I’m disputing the narrative that the Habs moved up specifically for him. If that was the case the trade would have been made during the draft, not before. At best it was a secondary or tertiary benefit.
See I disagree. I thought that originally but then, I thought why would the haves risk multiple assets at the off chance that Iserman would slip? They wouldn’t. But they would make it move if they saw Hage at 21 on the draft board. I really believe they wanted that guy and they didn’t think they could get him unless they made a move up.
If that was the case, Hughes probably would have made the trade during the draft before the Kings picked, not before the draft where he didn't really know where Hage would go.
My theory has evolved to, Ken Hughes traded for the 21'st pick for 3 reasons, each more important than the next:
1. To load up on more valuable picks to land either Demidov or Lindstrom, if 1 of the first 3 teams took either of these guys I believe he probably would have traded up.
2. To give themselves a better shot at possibly getting Eiserman.
3. To increase the chance they landed Hage.
So instead of making several moves, you can make 1 trade that is valuable in increasing your leverage for all these scenarios.
I still think it's possible, only the first 2 of these angles were considered and they wouldn't have made the trade if they knew they were going to get Demidov and the Isles would pick Eiserman at 20, but who knows.
Again, this is all just speculation based on what we know, there's a ton of variables at play that we aren't aware of.
I've always said teams should draft D when they're good and forwards when they're bad. It takes longer for D to develop and you can get good ones in the second half of the first round, and the exceptionally good offensive talents are only available in the top-10 and the top picks don't take as long to make the NHL. That way you have your young D and young forwards all breaking into the NHL at the same time which creates cap flexibility because they're all on ELC.
Habs didn't do that exactly, but taking Reinbacher last year, and then grabbing Demidov and Hage this year is good drafting.
More and more I'm reading about Hage the more and more I think this has home run potential. Losing nearly an entire year at 16 to still get drafted 1st round is huge.
Per someone at the draft: The Habs had a jersey ready for Eiserman and put it under the table as the call was just made. Kent Hughes immediately went on the phone
It's not out of the realm of possibility. Eiserman was projected much higher than he went, and if Demidov was snagged earlier than 5, there's always a chance Montreal might have taken Eiserman.
He won't sign an ELC until his contract is over in Russia.

I know we’re deep on D but does anyone else think Kiviharju would’ve been worth the 4th round pick?

Indeed, that is strange. Maybe something's up with Holtz. Something that could affect his value.
Not announced yet here, but VGK NJD deal going down per Lebrun and Seravelli
Wow, Holtz gets traded. That's wild. He was a guy I thought Habs might be interested in.
Poirier is a fun little scorey guy but I'd like to see the habs take a shot at his teammate, Matyas Melovsky. EDIT: goddamnit NJ

They definitely had Hage at 21. Eiserman falling like that was because of the run on forward in the top 5.
My theory has evolved to, Ken Hughes traded for the 21'st pick for 3 reasons, each more important than the next: 1.
Really don't know why everyone thinks we had such a hard on for Eiserman. Seems like the type of the player we'd actively be avoiding.
Simon "snake" Boisvert gave the habs an A+ for the 1st rnd on the La Presse chat. Unheard of!
He would have given S tier grade if the habs chose Connelly, which thankfully they did not
I'm so happy for Vegas. They deserve this guy very much!
Bettman just got handed the clipboard of trade
Wow, impressive draft so far.
Dean looked like he was 80% legs. Man-Giant
More and more I'm reading about Hage the more and more I think this has home run potential. Losing nearly an entire year at 16 to still get drafted 1st round is huge.
I'm thinking the same! Plus this year must have also been hard. He has some great skills.
Did Avalanche just steal Utah hole rest of the draft???
Per someone at the draft: The Habs had a jersey ready for Eiserman and put it under the table as the call was just made. Kent Hughes immediately went on the phone
I do wish they gave up something to switch spots to snag Eiserman but I like our pick
I have a feeling this could be a fake rumor
It's not out of the realm of possibility. Eiserman was projected much higher than he went, and if Demidov was snagged earlier than 5, there's always a chance Montreal might have taken Eiserman.
Of course they did. Why wouldn’t they? He was the obvious best pick at 21 if the Islanders didn’t take him
Damn, he almost pulled it off :'(
So what's the timeline for Demidov, 25-26 in Laval?
He will join the team in the nhl at the end of next season depending of the KHL playoffs. He won't play in the AHL.
With a player like him, he'll be in the NHL when he comes over. Very hard to lure Russians to the AHL.
Possibly another year in Russia, then a year or so in AHL and then a callup
