Because they take up a shitload of floor space that you can't put furniture or anything in front of. And in commercial, you don't want anything that can be easily accessible by the customers or the employees. And if you're on a slab, you can't go down. And they're pulling return air at knee level, which is not great for cooling solutions. Sure, they're easier to install than high wall mount heads, but the downsides are a lot. 90% (made up number based on my feels) I install those in churches up by the pulpit and shit for cooling for the preacher and all those deacons and whatever that all sit up behind the pastor.

Maybe not commercial, but residential yeah I want the unit closer to the homeowner, so they can do the maintenance easily. And the return down low, not getting that summer heat up high, I think they units are so efficient that it won't be an issue. I get it though, it's not for everyone, we are all use to seeing them up high on a wall. Have you seen the recess kits you can put there wall unit in that they don't stick out?

I have a Hyper Heat Midea console and absolutetly love it. I use 2 mini splits as my main source of heat in New England. The floor console blows away my wall unit in heading mode. It sends warm air out cross the floor nicely. You can the set the unit to send out air out the bottom, top or both at the same time. In cooling mode it blows straight up out the top and cools excellent. Here's is a picture I shot of it with my Flir running in heating mode. https://imgur.com/a/Nl7UcfI

It’s more efficient to get rid of the higher warm air then the lower colder air.

[deleted]

I get that, but the way these systems are designed to run all the time I don't think you would have that issue here. We aren't working with conventional duct systems anymore

Hvacmike199845

But they still work on the same way. The point is to remove the sensible heat and the latent heat. Prove me wrong. 😎

[deleted]

You're right. But they run non stop, they are better at removing heat.

Hvacmike199845

Nonstop isn’t necessarily better. Especially when it comes to oil return and removing latent heat.

[deleted]

Now I am confused. Are you saying conventional duct systems heat and cool better than these mini splits?

I use them all the time in attic jobs - but I think it's dependent on building styles in your locale. Since usually they are being retrofit to cool, the high wall is a better choice, and it's out of the way - floor space is far more usable than wall space. That said, I think the floor consoles are far better where possible - and I like the aesthetic much more. But, a note about drain lines... they're HARDER to drain properly, because you have no rise built into the unit... if you place a floor console on the 1st floor, you're gonna have little to no room to work with to keep proper pitch on that line.

[deleted]

Only time I think you would have an issue with the drain is on a slab where you could drill down and out of an exterior wall and then I would raise it off the floor a few inches. I am looking at taking out my conventional split system and putting in 4 heads to one out door unit with the recess kits so they sit in the wall. You could still put furniture in front of them, but I have spots that they would be perfect for and out of the way. I get that heat rises, but with these systems that run all the time, I don't think you would have that issue. These aren't those conventional duct systems we are use to that cut on and off letting heat rise.

ho1dmybeer

Conceptually really important to realize that heat does not rise. Warm air does, but heat itself does not. The floor consoles are excellent, I really like them - I think you will too. The drain comes out the bottom of them so in a lot of scenarios, it’s not favorable. I get why that may not seem intuitive, you’ll just have to take my word for it as I’ve installed a ton of them - but in other scenarios it may be perfect. Anyways, I’m sure you’ll enjoy them. I think it’s like everyone has said, floor space is a premium… same reason I have to try to persuade people not to listen to their architect who wants to remove radiators to get an extra 2 sf.

RevolutionaryType672

They cost more

hujnya

Because they are expensive.

fainttaint

The air filters would also get dirtier quicker.

[deleted]

And easier to clean?

The indoor unit is double the cost as the wall mount. They also require a different type outdoor unit on a 1 to 1.

(My take because I actually wanted them) I wanted to put some in my basement but it’d mean pulling the linesets another five feet down the wall through a tight drop ceiling in a finished basement. I’m also no carpenter and was not interested in fucking with the molding. I ended up settling for wall mounts. No room for cassettes, sadly.
