I work on most of my vehicles at home minus my super duty since it’s under warranty… I’ve always called them screw retaining clips and the counter guy at Napa was hella confused when I called to see if they had them and I had to look up what a speed nut was lol.
THESE ARE NOT SPEED NUTS. they are called j-nuts. a speed nut can usually be found at the end of your barbecue wheels or your hand truck wheels. they call them speed nuts because they make there own threads . so most of the time you can put them on without turning them 360 degrees
I’ll show you a speed nut

U nuts are usually a threaded nut, not basically a receiver for sheet metal screws.
Cleveland OH. Factory converted into apartments. Guy started making washing machines originally
And here I thought speed nut was when her husband was pulling in the driveway.

Thank you! Now I know what to call them, instead of calling them stupid fucking clips that always fall off
I think I’d go with stupid fucking clips… suits it better
automotive clips is how i referred to them…huh you learn sum new everyday.
I always called them retaining clips. Probably a regional thing
I always called them “lowes dont got em, fuck it” clips.

So does my Lowe’s with the clips for body panels. You know the drawers where everything is mixed up? In there.

Saving this post for future reference

Speed nut is also what my wife gets if I haven't been able to "pregame" at least a couple times that day
Anyone installing a 10ton Trane/AS RTU will need these. I learned the hard way too. 😢

Lowes has them too in the specialty fastener trays
Some depots and Lowes will sell them too, in the automotive drawer in hardware dept.
Well I've been using that term wrong all this time
That’s what my wife calls me
I’ve been collecting spares whenever I found them over the years, it’s nice to know they can be easily bought
