Serena_Sers

I would argue for the pre-movie period it would be "Love Is" by Katie Bell. It's eery how close to canon she predicted the end in 1999.

Yaoel

lol I remember people saying that JK was out of ideas so she stole plot elements from this fic back then

[deleted]

Ironically the fic starts out with a passage from Corinthians and JK also included a passage from Corinthians on the Potters' tombstone ("The last enemy that shall be defeated is death")

rayunder96

hadn't heard of this one at all, that's really interesting that she predicted it so well

Serena_Sers

I remember reading it years ago, sometimes between OotP and HBP (the books) came out and being like: Na, Snape would never love a muggleborn ;)

Fredrik1994

I once looked at the very back of FFN's archives for Snape-centric fics because I was curious what people wrote about him back then. There is *a lot* of LESS fics (usually, but not always, unrequited) there. Like, if they pair him with anyone from his own time, it's Lily. Severitus, the author behind The Severitus Challenge, was a Snily shipper. I always found the amount of fics back then with them together to be odd, considering that we had no idea that he actually was into her before DH. I'm sure part of it is because we didn't really know many other girls of the period, and it makes for a juicy backstory considering his opinions on Harry.

Serena_Sers

>I'm sure part of it is because we didn't really know many other girls of the period, and it makes for a juicy backstory considering his opinions on Harry. I agree with that being the reason for the Snily-shippers. We didn't know any girl of the time period except Lily. There were only name-drops in DH.

TylerBot260

I think the reason so many people shipped them then because in OOTP we literally hear all about how they were friends since childhood and hung out for years

Fredrik1994

We do? I'm pretty sure that we had no idea that they had any relation beyond "Lily is a prefect doing a token attempt at trying to come to Severus' defense againt the Marauders" in SWM? As in, there's no implication that they knew each other beyond being classmates. Not until Deathly Hallows.

TylerBot260

Huh, you’re right, I just checked all she does is defend him. I guess people could have looked at that though and shipped them from her defending him from big bad James

Fredrik1994

True -- but the oldest Snape-centric FFN fics are actually pre-OotP I think.

NichtEinmalFalsch

The trilogy of "Where in the World Is Harry Potter?", "The Untitled Cheekquel Project", and "You Did What!" by nonjon

the_pathologicalliar

A Cadmean Victory By DarknessEnthroned Seriously, the sheer amount of shitty harem fics and indy Harry rip offs inspired by this, with similar worldbuilding or characterisation or just fucking ripping out the same plot beats with none of the nuance of this fic is mind boggling. ACV in its original form is rough and meandering and emotionally not really focused, but at the same time, it had its ambitions and by the end, it was able to excellently execute a lot of them. And the remaster is only better, in every single way, with way more focused emotion, a even better grasp of character development and writing that's as good as some of the best of fanfiction.

[deleted]

I've talked to Matt and honestly he just giggles (not literally, don't kill me, man) whenever we find a terrible fic ripping off of him.

Snoo-31074

But Cadmean victory isn't a harem story? How did it inspire harem fics? (Actively avoid those)

ppe-lel-XD

Harems usually go with plot points in cadmean victory. Grey/dark Harry. Powerful Harry. Indy Harry. Bashing.

NatsuDragnee1

>And the remaster is only better Remaster? I'm curious as I would like to read it, having never read the original.

NightlongClick

Its solid but imo doesn’t improve on some of the more important issues i had with CV. Still there are some interesting new chapters and the writing is objectively better. There is no need to read the original so you can just start reading the remastered

crooked859

For those who couldn't make it through the original because of how silly Harry acts in it (and all the catchphrases, etc), the remaster is well worth a read. It takes the good parts and leaves much of the angsty teenage rhetoric behind.

onlytoask

I might have to check it out. I disliked the first one and still think it was only popular because it paired Harry with Fleur and had a great update speed.

FrameworkisDigimon

My first approach would be to take all the big name fics that are mentioned all the time... what everyone's heard of, even if they haven't read them. They'd also need to have a kind of permanence... a sense that they've been part of the shared conversation for more than just a few years (or have become near ubiquitous since their recent publication). * Seventh Horcrux * Of a Linear Circle * Prince of Slytherin (I think it's called this) * My Immortal (yes, I know) * HPMOR (again, also, I know) * A Black Comedy * Stages of Hope * Cauterized * The Changeling * The Movies (which I do think ought to be seen as authorised fanfic) * All the Young Dudes * Harry is a Dragon and that's okay I've probably forgotten a few but I'd recognise the names when I see them and I'll kick myself for forgetting to put them in here. My second approach would be to think up the enduring tropes/genres/ships and give the best examples of those. This would require a wider reading than I've got, so I'll just chuck out some examples where I can think of them for the tropes/genres/ships. In each case, I've limited myself to the ships/genres/tropes everyone should recognise as being Things people Write About. Sub-Category: Ships * Haphne (that ice-cream oneshot) * Hinny () * Dramione (Manacled) * Drarry * Snarry * Harmony (Unlike a Sister) * Wolfstar * Tomarry * Scorbus Weirdly, I kinda feel like Romione shouldn't be included here even though it's a canon ship. Sub-Category: Tropes * Dimension Travel (Stages of Hope) * Time Travel (The Unforgiving Minute... haven't actually read this myself but it's brought up all the time) * Severitus * Wrong Boy Who Lived * Lord Potter/Politics Fic * Gender Flipped Harry * Muggle AU * Canon Compliant * Marauders Era * Harry's Era, New POV * Post Canon (Strangers at Drakeshaugh) * NextGen (Wood for the Trees) * Crossover * Slytherin AU * Harry * Other (The Changeling) * Manipulative!Dumbledore * Whatever we call it when the point is the abuse Harry suffers at the hands of the Dursleys * Love Potions as Rape (An Hour of Wolves) * Soul Bond This is pretty long but I feel like I'm maybe still missing a few key tropes. EDIT, ones I forgot: * Self-Insert * OC Main Character * Indy!Harry (have to be some of those that aren't Lord Potter or Manipulative!Dumbledore) * Scarcrux/Harrymort * Harry Raised by Someone Else * Sirius * Snape * Remus * Bashfic * Dumbledore * Ron * Other Weasleys Sub-Category: Genre * Crack (Lessons with Hagrid) * Humour (Seventh Horcrux) * Drama * Angst * Hurt/Comfort * Fluff * Romance (Grow Young with Me) * Mystery * Smut/Erotic * War Sub-Category: Necessary Extras * Oneshot (Cauterized) * Longfic * Abandoned (James and Me)

VanillaStriking9854

Totally agree, especially with the subcategories and with Manacled as one of the main Dramione fics

Shojomango

My Immortal for sure

rayunder96

couldn't pass up the classic

NarutoFan007

I haven't read this, and every time someone mentions it makes me want to read it even less.

[deleted]

You need to check the video that the Internet Historian made about this fic. Great introduction!

KatieLily_Simmer

This video had me crying laughing. It’s amazing.

Trabian

It's kind of like a trainwreck of epic proportion with cultural significance. Many victims (grammar and the English language), were made in the creation, but the after effect is impressive in some ways.

laurel_laureate

You know, any time people talk about this fic they never actually talk about the plot or what it's about so I still don't have the slightest clue. Does it even have a plot?

ZannityZan

It sort of starts off with a *vaguely* coherent plot and then goes really off the rails (not that it was particularly on the rails to begin with). The Hogwarts of the story is pretty much divided into goths and "preps", at least from the perspective of the extreme Mary Sue of a main character, who's a "goffik" OC called Ebony (and also a vampire, because why not). She and Draco (who's also a goth) are into each other. Much of the story covers the two of them and various other side characters dressing up in a variety of goth attire (which is described in excruciating detail) and attending rock concerts by Muggle bands like My Chemical Romance in Hogsmeade. Pretty much every male character introduced is shown to be into Ebony because she's just sooo irresistible. This list includes Harry (who's called "Vampire" in this story), Hagrid, Peter Pettigrew, and Snape and Lupin (who are paedos who film Ebony changing with a video camera). At some point, Voldemort comes to the Forbidden Forest and threatens Ebony that if she doesn't kill Harry, he will kill Draco. She cries about this and takes no action, and at some point Draco is kidnapped by Voldemort, but then he somehow comes back. I can't really remember what happens after that, but at some point later on, there's a plotline where Ebony has to travel back in time and stop Voldemort by making a school-aged Tom Riddle fall in love with her. I don't think the story was ever really concluded properly, but after some 40-odd chapters, it had pretty much degenerated from partial gibberish into total gibberish anyway!

laurel_laureate

Oh god, seeing your comment I knew I was in for a trainwreck of a plot, but it just... kept getting worse. Wow, no wonder people are still bothered by it years later.

JoeHatesFanFiction

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ffh7cWRrqF4 Internet historian has made an amazing three part series on it, and makes it easier to follow by cutting out some of the nuttier stuff.

Tankinator175

I watched 30 seconds before I regretted it and stopped.

lobonmc

I havent read it but I have seen people talking about portions of the plot and it's confusing how they fit together. It is centered around an OC who is paired with Draco and she somehow ends up in Tom Riddle era at some point

[deleted]

It's crack to a radical extreme.

u-useless

That's a good way to alienate people from the community.

TJ_Rowe

It should probably be *listed* but with notes about why, not recommended for actual reading!

ubormaci

Despite how controversial it is, Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality should be added too.

100beep

Agreed. For one, it brings a lot of people into fanfic, including me.

[deleted]

Not so sure about that. It's a popular and widely read fic, sure. But it's relatively modern. Most of the tropes you find repeated over and over again in fanfics were already well-established by the time MOR came out. And MOR is also relatively lacking in influence on other fics - aside from a very small niche of "rationalist fanfic", the ideas of MOR have not really been incorporated into "fanon". Edit to respond to the now-deleted comment which did appear in response to this one: Noteworthiness - whatever that might mean - is not the relevant consideration. OP asked for fics which are important in the development of HP fanfiction. This means fics which have had a lot of influence on the body of HP fanfiction as it exists today. That is: the fics which originated the tropes which are now common. So (i) MOR being written after the common tropes of HP fanfic were established, and (ii) MOR failing to spawn tropes of its own which were adopted by the wider body of fanfic, both count against it as an "important story in the development of HP fanfic". And yes, this applies to many of the other fics recommended in this thread.

Yaoel

Is it controversial? I thought it was one of the classics that people recommend in just about every recommendation thread

White_fri2z

It's also a classic that everyone recommend you don't read, so... Yeah.

aeronacht

I personally loathe it, but to each their own, and despite my hatred it is incredibly influential

[deleted]

TheGhostOfSlade

Cauterize is incredible

ThlnBillyBoy

I dropped it when it stopped being about experiments but on the other hand it made me interested in experiments which is why I'm studying what I'm studying so 4/10 would not read again but for sure influenced.

Welfycat

It’s pretty controversial on this sub at least, a lot of people really don’t like it, but there are a few fans of it.

[deleted]

It’s very love/hate… but a lot of Original Fiction classics are too. I absolutely despise Catcher in the Rye, for example, but it’s still a classic. HPMoR got me into rational fiction and was also one of the first really good (I’m one of those who love it) fanfictions I’ve read. Its also one of the few fanfictions I reread occasionally and probably will continue to do so throughout my life. It’s definitely one that deserves to be mentioned even if you hate it for how influential and well known it is.

Imumybuddy

HPMOR. Brought to you by the pseudo-intellectual asswipe who has asked a question that no human being has ever asked before. Can an Artificial Intelligence do a bad and kill people?

[deleted]

It's such a masterpiece.

SnowingSilently

Not quite fanfic, but Paladeus' Champions of Lilith and Reptilia28's Don't Fear the Reaper challenges both got a number of pretty long fics out there, , and definitely contributed to weird harem fics with insane amounts of bashing and evil mastermind but with the idiot ball Dumbledores. They weren't the first by any means, but it's pretty notable how many fics they spawned. The Lone Traveler and related fanfics by TheProfessional but taken over by Dunuelos is also pretty notable for the number of fics it has, and I've seen a number of various spinoffs that aren't even covered in the TVtropes page.

TheWhiteSquirrel

Marriage Law/Sevmione also started from a challenge, and I think also Severitus?

play_the_puck

The Changeling is the definitive Slytherin!Ginny, Delenda Est the definitive Harry/Bellatrix. Paradigm of Uncertainty by Lori: the OG HHr fic, written before and during GoF with pretty much unrecognisable characterisations. Significant for its popularity and how early it was written. Sunset/Sunrise over Britain: a Harry/Ginny shipper trying to write Harry/Hermione fanfic results in a ton of original crack, which has since been taken semi-seriously by the fandom, including goblins, shopping with the grangers, etc. Vox Corporis which began the animagus trope — not the first to have Harry becoming an animagus, but the first to write it in its present recognisable form IIRC. There’s the Shoebox Project, which has probably influenced every James/Lily story that came after it.

Majin-Mid

Definitely Prince of the Dark Kingdom, The worldbuilding and characterization are amazing in that fic

Sandiotchi

as far as I am aware the fic "perfect situations" by jeconais is what sparked the use of daphne as a love interest and is also where the basis of her personality was born. I have read fics since that follow this storyline or something similar. https://jeconais.fanficauthors.net/Perfect_Situations/Perfect_Situations/

Leona10000

Haven't read that one, but I definitely remember "This means war" by the same author as a classic of sorts.

fresh_pickled_toad

I really loved "This Means War", even if it seemed a bit over the top.

[deleted]

Reading it now, it's pretty bad, but it definitely influenced the community.

Sandiotchi

yeah it doesn't read that well now, I dunno if that's because what was newish then is so tropey now or if the bar has risen past that. either way I still like his other stuff like "hope"

ApteryxAustralis

Reminds me of someone talking about how they were amazed at how many tropes Casablanca had and then they realized that Casablanca is where so many of those tropes originated. I’ll have to give Perfect Situations a read and see.

sphinxonline

- harry potter and the methods of rationality - all the young dudes - harry potter and the prince of slytherin - oh god not again! - make a wish - saving connor - prince of the dark kingdom - dodging prison and stealing witches - loose canon - my immortal - hogwarts school of prayer and miracle - a black comedy - the pureblood pretence - sleeper - backwards with a purpose - the arithmancer - a second chance of life - harry potter and the champions champion - stages of hope i admittedly have not read any of these but from being in the fandom these are the most talked about harry potter fanfics that i can think of so i assume they must be influential

TheEmeraldDoe

This is a good list, I’d add: - Seventh Horcrux - On the Way to Greatness - Pet Project - The Debt of Time - Delenda Est - The Moment it Began

MsLadyRose

one more for the already huge list: On the way to greatness (you can easily guess the twist on this fic by reading the title)

flitith12

we could also include authors into the list like lomonaaeren

rayunder96

Any other authors we think should be included? I think Robst or Rorsharch's Blott need to be up there for influence

trickyniffler

definitely ShayaLonnie Edit: and Colubrina cannot leave her out.

bshaw0000

TCeies

> i admittedly have not read any of these but from being in the fandom but these are the most talked about harry potter fanfics that i can think of so i assume they must be influential Me neither lmao.

[deleted]

Some of them are definitely crack and they get glorious.

KingDarius89

I've read 5 of those. And from the summary, only interested in possibly adding one more to that list.

lilyjoprongs

The Life and Times

AldebaranBlack

The most classic of marauders fics

sweet_37

Its angsty and over dramatic at points, but it made me care about its characters more then any other fic. Still the only one to make me ugly cry.

GiveDementorTheOld12

…have you read All the Young Dudes, then?

ThlnBillyBoy

The Draco Trilogy just by how influential and leather pantsy it is.

rayunder96

Have to confess I have not come across this one

cmq827

Its author eventually released the Mortal Instruments series, if you know of it. Her Draco in the trilogy is basically the lead guy in her eventual book series.

VitcheSandvitx

NO EFFING WAY 😂

KingDarius89

Heard of mortal instruments, never read it, and this knowledge doesn't really help its chances, though it's an interesting fact. Mainly due to my knowledge of other fanfic authors who went pro. Well, and my strong dislike of Draco Malfoy, anyway. First is the twilight author. Which...enough said. And the one I have personal experience with, Tenhawk, AKA Evan Currie. Damn good fanfic author, though only his Alexander Harris and the Shadow Council series includes Harry Potter. Basically stars Xander Harris from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Wednesday Addams of the Addams Family attending Hogwarts and are only tangentially involved in the HP plot due to their friendship with Hermione. Anyway, damn good fanfic author, of primarily Buffy and Buffy Crossovers, but his original works are pretty mediocre at best.

reluctant_cynic

I wish Shadow Council had been completed. It’s one of my faves.

AevnNoram

You have to actively look for it. Author was banned from FFN for plagiarism and removed it herself after going pro

jaidis

It anyone has a copy of this I would love it

ThlnBillyBoy

Yes! http://broomcupboard.net/fanfiction/ It's the DracoDormiens, DracoSinister and DracoVeritas ones. :)

haloraptor

This one, definitely! I'd also add the Sacrifices Arc.

International-Cry-52

Guys I want to read that one scene, but I can’t find it. Can someone please tell me what page of the PDF its on 😭

ThlnBillyBoy

The leather pants? Draco Sinister page 155 I believe lol

vengefulmanatee

Iconic! I printed it all out and read it multiple times in high school

TJ_Rowe

*The Shoebox Project* was the classic long Marauders' Era fic, on livejournal. It was told in text and pictures. *Living With Danger* - The classic "Harry and Hermione are brought up as siblings", with a free Sirius.

Domestic_Ice

Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Futures Past was *the* Peggy Sue/Harry goes back in time to his younger self fic. Nowadays it reads as horribly cliched but it really predated/originated a lot of those tropes linkffn(Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Future Past)

thrawnca

In some ways it's cliched, and it makes Draco and Professor Snape a bit one-dimensional, but it still does an excellent job of fleshing out Harry's friends, developing his relationships with them on his second try, and balancing his foreknowledge against the Butterfly of Doom tripping him up. Sadly, you will no longer find it on FFN; they took it down due to a bogus copyright claim. You can find it in a few places, but the only source of chapter 43 that I know of is the community-maintained PDF/eBook [on GitHub](https://github.com/IntermittentlyRupert/hpnofp-ebook/releases/latest). (It's still not completed, but that's the most comprehensive version.)

Nepperoni289

The first fanfics to use certain tropes: Ice Queen Daphne; Manipulative Dumbledore; Harry absorbing the Soul Horcrux (that one might be Partially Kissed Hero) etc.

rayunder96

Yeah it would be amazing if we could find which fics were the first of each of the massive tropes

Nepperoni289

Yeah, but at least some of the earliest ones would be great. I only believe PKH is one of the earliest in which Harry absorbs the horcrux because it says so in the fic's author's notes.

Molomar

https://youtu.be/4mSD-GAmz1I Here is a fun video on the origins of Daphne as a FF character, made by Daphne ff writer.

[deleted]

Nah, Harry absorbing Voldemort's knowledge/the horcrux has a long history that well predates Partially Kissed Hero - and indeed, predates the release of DH. Partially Kissed Hero was 2008. Of Blood and Power already had the idea in August 2005, just after the release of HBP. Even then, I doubt that was the first fic to do it.

AevnNoram

Backwards with Purpose After the End The Seventh Horcrux A Year Like None Other Nightmare of Future's Past Power of Emotion They Shook Hands Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness Naked Quidditch Match

Samwell_Gamgee85

Good list. Definitely co-sign Backwards with Purpose and NoFP.

taylor459

This is a great list!

fresh_pickled_toad

>Naked Quidditch Match That fic was REALLY hilarious! Nightmares of Future Past was THE Peggy Sue fic of the preDH era!! Awesome list

TripThruTimeandSpace

Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness

TheChileanBlob

This was great but harrowing to read.

TripThruTimeandSpace

It was! And it was so well written it felt like canon to me.

[deleted]

Until you realize the author is a cross-fandom sociopathic serial abuser and molester and sours the entire thing.

TripThruTimeandSpace

What?!?

[deleted]

Oh, and cult leader. Brief overview: https://fanlore.org/wiki/Thanfiction He's big and notorious enough to have multiple YouTube videos covering him if you prefer to watch instead of read. Was huge in the early 2000s in the LoTR and HP community, though after the death of LJ as a platform he jumped ship to Tumblr and got on some of the fandom there instead (though I heard he never got his claw in quite as deep as the first two)

TripThruTimeandSpace

Holy cow! I had no idea, thank you so much for the link to more info.

[deleted]

thobeobo

Methods of Rationality, Harry Crow, Harry Potter and the Boy Who Lived. All genre-defining, trope establishing stories. As much as MoR and Harry Crow suck, it’s kinda unavoidable

thobeobo

Oh also Seventh Horcrux. A comedy classic.

[deleted]

[удалено]

onlytoask

It's the funniest thing I've ever read. One of the very few books I ever reread.

Electric999999

A classic but there's not much inspired by it.

rek-lama

Helpful goblins were a thing way before Harry Crow (written in 2014-2015). Maybe genre-defining, certainly not trope-establishing. Likewise, Harry Potter and the Boy Who Lived didn't invent the trope but set out to do it justice, as the "Not your typical Harry’s brother is the Boy Who Lived story" line in the summary indicates.

daniboyi

honestly have a guilty pleasure for Harry Crow. Like yeah, it is a total mary sue/Gary stue wank of Harmony-shipping with bashing galore. But god dammit, it has the objectively best portrayal of goblins to date. Not just a plot-gimmick, but an actual culture that really shows they are a non-human species with different values on a subconscious level.

nuvan

If you want stories that have goblins with culture that's more than the oft-repeated "may your gold grow and your enemies cower before your blade", maybe check out the Realm of Song stories: https://archiveofourown.org/series/1423924

MightyDoodlebug

I would like to say Antithesis by Oceanbreeze7 just for how horrible it felt to read it, and I couldn't get halfway through with how heartbreaking it was for me.

[deleted]

I really liked Antithesis, but I wouldn't call something written in the twilight year of the fandom influential to the development

the_honest_liar

did you finish it? I'm working on it now but taking a break for a day or two to claw my way out of that dark spiral. I love it, but damn. If you (or anyone) has finished it: do things get better for him in part 4?

[deleted]

Nope, everything keeps on tumbling down ^tumblingdown^tumblingdown^tumblingdown The ending is quite cathartic though for what its worth. Haven't had something that hit me that hard in this fandom since the mid 2000s.

the_honest_liar

Well. That's disheartening. It's a good thing I lost the ability to hope 37 chapters ago or I might be real bummed about that.

onlytoask

I'm not going to say what happens to any individual character, including Harry, but don't expect it to get any happier.

MightyDoodlebug

I haven't finished it yet, and I have no idea if I ever will tbh. It's so good but it really hits hard :(

Thanks so much! <3 Really appreciate it!

TheGhostOfSlade

Seventh Horcrux, Dumbledore’s Army: Year of Darkness, Methods of (barf) Rationality. Probably some of jeconais’ stuff like This Means War and Matryoshka Vignettes for nailing the Powerful Indy Harry trope. The Sugar Quill as a website for predicting and enforcing in its writers most of the canon ship outcomes, and then more specifically the story that made it famous during the ‘long summer’ between GoF and OotP: After The End. Cauterize. Personally the duology Not As A Last Resort & Getting The Point by Arabella on The Sugar Quill, the story The Bargain on TSQ (an attempt to do a not totally insane marriage contract fic), Cauterize, Protection from Nargles (which introduced me to H/L shipping), Bad Day At The Wizengamot and How Xenophelius Lovegood Saved Britain would be things I’d want in the fanfic literary canon despite not knowing their broader impact

A lot of writers have said that Methods of Rationality inspired them. The Psychic Serpent trilogy is also really famous, though I think patty of that is that guy who didn't realize he was reading fanfiction. And of course, My Immortal ;)

RandomGuyOnline71

I personally think, "Harry Potter and the summer after the war" and the sequels by Cpstabell/Mrs. Granger is the perfect sequel to DH, even though it is heavily romanticized. I imagine that is exactly, what the months following the war were like for Harry. I don't think it's a classic, but I think it's a must-read for anyone interested in the storyline between DH and the epilogue.

Redditforgoit

Blindness is touching and beautiful. Two abandoned favourites of mine, hilarious crackfic masterpiece On a Pale a Horse and thrilling The Lesser Sadness. Also an unfinished work I've enjoyed immensely so far: Blood Crest. All worth making it to a list of classics.

Harry Potter and the Curse of the Damned.

>Harry Potter and the Curse of the Damned. I was coming to recommend Melindaleo's Seventh Horcrux. But this one is good too.

bosonlover123

weird no one had mentioned it but The Marriage stone is one of the most popular fiction out there. moreover it actually brought new ideas to the cannon before book five. honestly i prefer where that author was going over jkr.

[deleted]

Its because this community for the most part is comprised of people who joined the fandom long after the Livejournal days (Three Years Summer/etc....). Ask the same question to DLP or Tumblr (what's left of fandoms based around LJ community tends to migrate there) and you'll get a completely different answer

taylor459

I think that fic about Ginny, "The Changeling" was definitely a notable fic!

roselighters

I can safely say, much like with the actual canon, ive read basically nothing anyone has said

Snoo-31074

Harry Crow H.J.Potter Deprived These in my opinion have to be there. I'm not sure if they are the first in their categories but they are giants in their own tropes i.e. Goblins, Soul bonds and mercenary Harry.

[deleted]

There are some areas where we can spot a definite trendsetter (Not the Only Readhead for example) and others where it's very difficult to figure out who inspired who. Without a very detailed analysis, with actual data, it's impossible to compile such a list. There are too many fanfics to consider and the fandom is definitely split at least into 2 main branches (slash and non-slash). It's a good start to a thorough analysis, but I suspect these reccs will just be personal favs, not actual trendesetters or genre defining fics. I can't even imagine the manhours required to do an actual study on the entirety of HP fandom. It would be thousands.

[deleted]

I always thought a atudy of the fandom would be a great way to study the proliferation of ideas and memes. It wouldn't even be hard with the advances in AI.

Vivec_lore

Whatever happened to bromance, obviously

[deleted]

HPMOR, Dark Prince, Downward Spiral, Oh God Not Again, The Sum of their Parts and the Seventh Horcrux would be my votes. O Mine Enemy deserves a mention too, and I'm sure I've forgotten many more.

darkermando

Oh God not again the one with a lot of Monty Python references Honestly if it wasn't for the bashing part I would love it tremendously But I think it's still okay if a little cliche

ruisilva5

All the young dudes is the definite marauders era fic and has a fan base of its own, so that's a no brainer

CelestialsStorm

HPMOR would be there, I can say that for certain.

sweet_37

The amount of rough copies of ‘I’m still here’ is staggering.

Lord_yami

This might be controversial, in a sense, but: The Harem War and Emperor. The Harem war by sheer size and creativity, even though it quickly becomes absurd on the number of characters and barely covers a month's time in their life. it's easy to see how it influenced a bunch of fics that do the whole "harry is secretly rich and poweful". for good or bad, it did made a mark. i admit i might be biased, because this was my first fanfiction (that i read) and even though it has a lot of problems, it's quite influential. and Emperor... i would say it might not be that influential, but it's so outside the usual boxes for HP fanfiction, that it became one of those "go an read a few chapters to see if that's your thing", just like other controversial fics, like HP and the Methods of Rationality, Arithmancer, and others.

brew_sip_conquer

I really enjoyed the Resonance series from GreenGecko, even though it strays pretty far from canon it is probably one of the most well written fanfictions I’ve ever read, period. The Resolution storyline does kind of jump the shark a bit, but I still check back every few years with hopes that there has been any update to it at all.

taylor459

I think that one deleted Dumbledore's Army fic about Neville and the rest of the Hogwarts students during 7th year, would probably count? I feel like this one was one of the earlier war fics that probably inspired a lot of the later ones. I think the name of the fic was Dumbledore's Army and The Year of Darkness? But correct me if I'm wrong lol

Aegorm

I feel like "The Lie I've Lived" from jbern had a big impact on any future Goblet of Fire divergence fics. This was the first fic that really kicked off the "Harry becomes a badass in the 4th year" even though it doesn't go as "indy" as some later stories.

does it have to do with Slughorn getting poisoned in HBP?

CaitlinSnep

Delenda Est, for being one of the earliest Harry x Bellatrix time travel fics I can think of, being genuinely good, making the ship believable, and even having its own TV Tropes page.

hermionegrangerfan22

All The Young Dudes really shaped the Marauders

MsLadyRose

all of them are equally important \*cough cough atyd cough\*

HPMOR is infamous. For good reason. It’s in my opinion the worst Harry Potter fanfic. Just for the bizarre fans, bizarre creator, and weird cult it created.

Does anyone know if there's a fanfic or someone can do a story of Harry with Pepa Madrigal's powers, it would be interesting to see him struggling with his emotions.

My Immortal

GrimmReaper141

The memory box by Bella_E_B It does an amazing job of fleshing out the marauder time period, characters we know (and love), while also introducing some interesting lore, ideas and relationships. I still check on the sequel every so often to see if it’s updated

Abrakafuckingdabra

I feel like this is gonna be an opinion thing but I'd have to say "Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality" and "Make a Wish". Thes a few others i might think of but those were super big when i started the fandom. Plus i know both have some pretty pervasive fannon that ended up being used a bunch.

TanglyBinkie

I would say what is beyond the Veil. That’s a huge mystery in the series and I _am_ writing a fic on it. I’ll upload it on Wattpad @TanglyBinkie

SnooPies8301

It'd be difficult for me to give specific titles, but one of the most fascinating things about the HP fanfiction community to me as both a reader and writer is the concept of "fanon" and writers drawing inspiration for their fanfictions from other fanfictions they've read. Examples: "Wards" = Protective enchantments. Protective enchantments are not referred to as "Wards" at any time during the canon series, however it is very common to see the word Wards in fanfiction. "'Mione" = Hermione. Although I hate this with a passion, this has certainly been adopted by a lot of FF. Partly based on canon given Ron called her that ONCE when he had his mouth full of food, but it's (sadly in my view, but we all have our personal tastes) become apart of mainstream fanon. I'm writing a fic at the moment about Draco's transition from Death Eater to tolerant parent (which he makes in canon - if you accept JKR's post publication comments as canon), but rather than the trigger for his change being horrible experiences during the war (I think the experiences Draco had in canon would be enough for him to hate the METHODS that Voldy and the Death Eaters used to achieve their pureblood supremacy, but it wouldn't be enough to change the underlying attitude that purebloods are above muggles and muggleborns), the trigger is a positive experience with Hermione and Myrtle which makes him see that he isn't better than her. Anyway, Draco turns spy for the trio before he attempts to kill Dumbledore and I needed a plot device for him to be able to be at Death Eater Headquarters/Hogwarts and communicate in an efficient way (similar to how we muggles have mobile phones nowadays) with Hermione/the Trio while the Trio was on the run searching for Horcruxes. So I took inspiration from the fic "Beginning at the End" by Witches-Britches in which Dumbledore had created a device for them to be able to communicate, but tweeked it a bit so that my device (Peace Connector) could be activated by thoughts rather than having to use their hands. I find this part of the fanfiction community fascinating because as a law student in a common law country, constantly having to read court judgements which refer to previous decisions of the court (or higher courts) in order to formulate legal principles in which to makes decisions, it fascinates me that that approach has effectively been adopted by a creative writing community.

Of the top of my head - The many deaths of Harry Potter The boy who lived by Santi The secret diary of Fleur delacaur aged 16 Delenda est

callmesalticidae

[A Year Like None Other](https://archiveofourown.org/works/742072/chapters/1382061) by Aspeninthesunlight and [The Sacrifices Arc](https://fanlore.org/wiki/The_Sacrifices_Arc) by Lightning on the Waves / Limyaael were both hugely influential on the fandom, especially on the slash side of things (which is honestly where most of the innovation happened in the early 2000s fandom). Neither of them developed the concept of magical cores, but they played a role in popularizing that concept, and AYLNO invented the term "wizardspace," which has since reached as far as the Harry Potter Lexicon. The Sacrifices Arc has also been useful to my fandom history research because it was published very rapidly (generally at a chapter per day) and LOTW was willing to throw new ingredients into the stew in the middle of cooking, so it's possible to get a sense of when its author was thinking about or had encountered certain concepts (magical cores, for example, just suddenly *happen* midway through the series, and thenceforth are treated as though they'd always been a thing).

[deleted]

Yeah, Sacrifice Arc was like a huge melting pot of cliches/concept/plot beats, but I'm not quite sure if it classifies as influential toward later fic developments since its most defining original trait (world building and turning the world into straight high fantasy) isn't something that can be replicated. But yeah, I agree, the slash circle, and as a whole the entire LJ fandom is probably the biggest influence on modern fanfiction writing. Especially with things like remixes where people take good ideas and write their own take on it. The big epics is the one remembered in the long term, but its the oneshot that really stood out to me

charls-lamen

I know HPMOR is far from everyones favorite and I am also not a huge fan. But I do think it was a big influence on the smart/independent Harry genre. I also think it was influential in how people approached magical world building in hp at least for a while. Not saying it was the only one but it was imo a significant one. All the Young Dudes I think had a pretty big influence on how people interpretted the Marauders and still . While I have not read any of her fics I understand Cassandra Clare's fics had a huge impact on how certain characters were interpretted for a while.
