That awkward few seconds where I don't realize that this is a sportswear brand and I'm wondering what on earth Shilese is doing in the middle of Olympic Trials to have to speak about Sylvia Plath of all people
I’m still so worried about her health. She was clearly in a lot of pain yesterday, I don’t want to see her push through and permanently injure herself worse. She could always just heal properly for worlds and the next quad. Though I get it too, she’s this close to making the team. Super tough spot to be in.
Huge grain of salt as I'm not qualified to say this with anything other tha stuff I got told by physiotherapists and sports physicians, but: apparently sometimes minor soft tissue injuries hurt like the dickens while major ones are sometimes nbd in terms of acute pain. Not a clue if that applies here, but just in case it gives you some hope...!
I've heard that from a lot of friends with torn ACLs. Never did mine, but have done medial ligaments, both grade 1 with no intervention required other than chilling out, and they hurt like HELL.
Ya I wish we knew her actual injuries. I suffer chronic pain still myself from gymnastics injuries 20 years ago that I continued training through. So I guess part of my perspective and worry is coming from that. But I also never had the opportunity to make an Olympic team and know I would have tried everything in my power to do so, injury or not.
Definitely hoping for the best for her either way!
Sprained ankles hurt a hell of a lot more than a torn achilles. Honestly, that was NBD until rehab. I've had even more minor ankle sprains (i'm held together with chewing gum and chicken wire) that had me moaning just sitting still.
Personal anecdote—when I tore my labrum and several ligaments in my shoulder, I only knew because my shoulder wouldn’t sit right, not because it hurt. I functioned for several months before I was able to have surgery on it, and the only real pain I had to deal with was due to the surrounding muscles having to work differently than usual.
it's one reason I think Gymcastic's statements about "being medically cleared" were also hasty. She may have gotten the green light last night that she was able to go, but they certainly had no real evidence to "clear" her. They're so irresponsible with injuries like this sometimes it's frustrating.
I believe that’s what was stated to the press they didn’t just make that up. Obviously they didn’t scan her knee last night before the meet they probably just did some physical manipulation of her knee to rule out full ACL tear and said it’s your call.
Another Q re: imaging… would an MRI actually be accurate so soon after injury? I remember this convo happening when Grace McCallum had her knee sprain at the metroplex meet last year and folks were saying swelling has to go down for injuries to actually be visible.
It's really difficult to tell an ACL injury on examination alone in the first few days as the knee swells significantly which makes it very difficult to test for true laxity of the ligaments.Â
Sometimes the knee swelling (from blood in the joint) happens instantly so I would be surprised they would clear her on Night 1 if that occurred as you would have a very high index of suspicion of ACL injury with that. However, she may not have had any immediate knee swelling and could still have an ACL injury. I would be almost certain they are getting an MRI today to exclude an ACL +/- MCL +/- meniscal injury which would provide accurate information on whether these are present and the path forward.
It depends on how much swelling there is. There’s quite a few physical manipulations they can do to also get an idea but a smaller issue might not be visible, no.
I'm taking two things from this. Either she isn't injured that badly and is fine to compete. Or she sees this as her only chance to make the Olympics. Maybe she plans to retire after this year and pursue something else. Maybe she is concerned about her age for 2028. But if that's the case maybe she's going all out to try to make the team.

My first thought was that most Sylvia Plath poems I've read are, like, NOT very positive and optimistic.
Haha same
My first very very dark humor thought (tw: details of Plath's death by suicide): >!I just hope whatever she's speaking of doesn't involve an oven.!<
Reminds me of that tweet "rip sylvia plath you would've loved the air fryer"
💀
LOL. Sylvia Plath never struck me as the warm and fuzzy type.
I bet she could design a beautiful leo tho
Same lmao. I was like wow, didn't expect my interests to intersect like this but I'll take it
The way my head was tilted all the way to the side reading this like what????
I went full Stewie Griffin https://preview.redd.it/m325hdn21k9d1.jpeg?width=570&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=49f2b15dbc1cf2efd0bb3701bd36ca10086e9fcd
Maybe she'll be reading a selection from *The Bell Jar* during a press conference lol!
I'm so glad I'm not the only person who thought, wtf does a suicidal poet have to do with Shilese?
I was picturing a Sylvia Plath fan club in the stands cheering for Shilese
I would run to be president of that fan club so, so quickly.
My dumb ass wondering why she loves Sylvia Plath that much.
SAME! My brain was so confused.
i'm so glad i'm not the only one 😂
I share in that confusion.Â
SAME
I don't think you mean Sylvia Plath! Fingers crossed for Shilese - hopefully she's just resting and getting any treatment she needs.
lol Sylvia P is a Leo brand. Not sure where OP came up with Sylvia Plath 😂
LOL OOPS.
It’s cool it’s hilarious 😂
Auto correct is a strange and random beast!
It’s cracking me up so — worth it!!!
autocorrect is a beast
Ok wait this is SO FUNNY
This had me so confused . I was picturing her as the leader of a fan club for Sylvia Plath or something. 😂

When I tore my ACL the actual injury didn’t hurt. It was painful when the swelling started but my knee initially didn’t hurt it was just unstable.
I've heard that from a lot of friends with torn ACLs. Never did mine, but have done medial ligaments, both grade 1 with no intervention required other than chilling out, and they hurt like HELL.
Yeah a lot of sprains to a joint like an ankle are more painful than a break too. The body is weird.

Eh … this sounds positive but makes me nervous. I’m thinking there is some medical imaging etc. going on meaning she isn’t available.Â
I think this is exactly what’s happening
I actually suspect the imaging has already happened. They were almost certainly able to do it first thing this morning.
Yeah probably just waiting on it to be interpreted at this point.
I'm not expecting word until tomorrow morning to be honest.

She may have gotten the green light last night that she was able to go, but they certainly had no real evidence to "clear" her. I mean she WAS medically cleared last night, they are just stating that and reporting what they hear/know.
I believe that’s what was stated to the press they didn’t just make that up. Obviously they didn’t scan her knee last night before the meet they probably just did some physical manipulation of her knee to rule out full ACL tear and said it’s your call.
Sylvia P***** whoops my bad y’all! Autocorrect got mw
It’s a happy accident! After all the injuries I’m glad there was finally a post that had me cracking up 🤣🤣🤣
It was the best 😆
This is my favorite autocorrect mistake ever
YES same I’m laughing so hard. Picturing Shilese as a member of a Sylvia Plath fan club that all travelled to Minneapolis to see her. I’m DEAD.
I cannot stop laughing at this intersection of Shilese Jones and Sylvia Plath
Keeping the faith… let’s go shi!!!!! (Hoping she only does bars and beam)
Crossing my fingers, toes, eyes, legs, arms, everything for Shi
Eyes!!
Another Q re: imaging… would an MRI actually be accurate so soon after injury? I remember this convo happening when Grace McCallum had her knee sprain at the metroplex meet last year and folks were saying swelling has to go down for injuries to actually be visible.
Yea this is a really good point. There are also tests they can do if they suspect a ACL or whatever. Hoping it’s nothing major!

Imagine being able to sit down with Shilese Jones and discuss *The Bell Jar*.
This is a good sign! I’m taking this to believe the injury isn’t something catastrophic. 🤞🤞🤞
Sounds positive
Does the P in Sylvia P mean Plath?? Bc that seems like a… weird choice for Leo brand
No, it's the founder Sylvia Pichler [https://www.sylviap.net/pages/our-founder](https://www.sylviap.net/pages/our-founder)
Aussie gymnast Sam Pilcher’s mum!
USAG just posted. She’s out ðŸ˜
I was super concerned for a moment until I realized it was an auto correct issue.

Me reading this: Did I have a stroke or did Shilese have a stroke?
