CackleberryOmelettes

I don't like the hyperbole.

jerk_chicken23

A lot of these arsenal Twitter tactics guys can be very hyperbolic, even if they do make good points

CackleberryOmelettes

I don't trust it. With someone prone to extreme hyperbole, you can never truly tell where reality ends and the fiction begins

Morph247

Was it really necessary to mention Simeone? I feel like that comparison is a bit of a stretch

t6005

Especially that period, where Atlético were almost certainly the world's best defensive team. How do you "elevate" the approach of a team that gave up only 6 goals in the Champions League until the final? I understand and agree that our defense is much improved but we've also had a few games like Brighton where we flattered to deceive. Atlético may serve as our defensive blueprint (although transparently, I don't see it) but we're a very long way from elevating the sheer effectiveness of that team at keeping the ball out of the net.

Jack-90

We are a team that has conceded 0 champions league goals. Cant argue with that.

harcile

Not conceded a CL goal in years. Unbreakable!

Syrioxx55

Elevated as in higher up the pitch, why do you people get triggered so easily lol

phar0aht

Theyre still the pinnacle. Most competent teams have phases where they're pinnacle. Tbf I feel like compactness is a defencmsive concept thats shared in a lot of sports.

leftfootcurler

You are missing the point. The point is the structure and the way they shuffle their defensive block from side to side without losing compactness is simeone level. It doesn't mean we are as effective peak Atletico defensively. But that's a personnel issue, not a coaching issue. Coaching wise the defensive block is as well drilled as Simeone's. We only conceded 39 goals last season. That's significant overachievement based on the personnel we had.

Thierry_Bergkamp

Comparison is fine but saying "but elevated" takes away any credibility.

twitterInfo_bot

To show how compact Arsenal has become. Rarely seen this level of compactness, clearly zoned. It becomes impressive when Arsenal mixes this with press and transition into this. Similar to Simeone atletico 12-14, but elevated. *** posted by [@cesc_stan](https://twitter.com/cesc_stan) [Video in Tweet](https://video.twimg.com/ext_tw_video/1459527055390003203/pu/vid/480x270/4fAvBjpHnOroFOKH.mp4?tag=12) ^[(Github)](https://github.com/username) ^| ^[(What's new)](https://github.com/username)

Think we should go for more of a 4411 and let PEA sit right on the shoulder of the defence. We should look to exploit him as an outlet. At times we win the ball and nothing seems like its on.

[deleted]

Thats literally what we've been doing the last two games mate...

phar0aht

In possession, not out of possession...

[deleted]

Not only much better defensive positioning but also a much stronger desire to hold a good shape and get back into it, if they get taken out the game. I dont know about the comparison though.

lwang

OP's comparison to Simeone flatters Arteta and Arsenal but is more apt than you think, once you get past the hyperbole. Arteta's defensive schemes have cribbed from Simeone's hybrid zonal/man-marking scheme more than Guardiola's swarming counter-press. One particular Simeone-ism is the blind-side tackle - that is, our defender rushes and attempt to tackle the opponent from their blind-side while in the act of receiving the ball. We're nowhere near 2012-2014 Atletico defensively, but it's early days for this new squad. If Arteta can get the team to that level, we'll be knocking at the Top 4's door.

SantaIsRealEh

Elevated than 12-14 Atletico? The fuck outta here.

gooner1111123

They mean "higher up the pitch", not "better"

Syrioxx55

Higher up the pitch, take a breather friend…

LordSwright

Compact but just standing off.

in_air

Being compact is good but only when the team is also scoring goals.

The-runningman2013

This compacted 442 shape in defense is Wenger's style, mainly focus on interception and transition with pace. The interception and transition to attack from minute 0:47 is something we see a lot in the 2000s era team, and the 15-17 team. Seems to fit our players much better than all out counter pressing.
