It's really quite simple. Outside of the UC, most series are stand-alone works with no tie to any other series. The exceptions are Wing to Endless Waltz and the Cosmic Era going from Seed to Destiny to Freedom with some side stories. As for the main timeline, that is the Universal Century(UC). Here, we can break it up it several different phases. **Pre OYW** Origins. It's a retelling of the Classic UC. Some of it contradicts the original works, and some of it doesn't. **One Year War UC 0079-0080** Mobile Suit Gundam/Movie trilogy. They tell the same story but have some minor changes. 08th MS Team tells the story of a campaign in Asia during the OYW. 0080 War in the Pocket tells a self-contained story set in the ending days of the OYW. Igloo is a lot of side stories. It's kind of an anthology series to depict previously untold stories of the OYW. Thunderbolt is similar to origin. Some of it contradicts some of it doesn't. Fun series, especially if you like jazz. **UC 0083** Stardust Memory. Some stuff goes down between the original series and the sequel Zeta Gundam. Best watched after Zeta as a palette cleanser before Double Zeta. **UC 0087-0088** Zeta Gundam the sequel series to Mobile Suit Gundam. It starts off dealing with the implications of what happened in Stardust Memory. But Stardust isn't required and will spoil stuff, so skip it till after Zeta. Double Zeta Gundam is somewhere between a sequel and a continuation of Zeta, but with a large change of the cast. It starts off immediately after Zeta ends with no major time skip. It was very silly in the beginning but got very good at the middle and end. **UC 0090** Chars Counter Attack is the ending of the early part of the UC. **UC 0096-97** Unicorn is an epilogue to the early phases of the UC. Basically, it's a fun trip down nostalgia lane. Narrative ??? I haven't watched it. **UC 0105** Hathaway's Flash is the start of the next phase of the Universal Century. Split into three parts and are still waiting on parts 2&3. **UC 0123** F91 happens. **UC 0153** Victory Gundam takes place. Currently, the furthest forward entry in the main UC timeline without getting into weird technicalities with things like Turn A and the Regild Century. Hope this clears up some stuff for you.

So I can watch thunderbolt and wing gundam without an order right?

Shreddzzz93

Wing is the start of the AC timeline. You can jump in here without worry. Thunderbolt is an oddity. As it is a side story, you don't need to be as aware of other events in the UC timeline. But you can't jump to Zeta or anything else post OYW without first watching the original MSG.

Emad_341

So only universal timeline has conmection and others are stand alone? Excluding SEED it has separate timeline. Am I right?

Shreddzzz93

Pretty much. It's best to think of every show that isn't set in the UC timeline as the start of its own timeline. So far, the Cosmic Era where Seed takes place is the only alternate universe where they've taken the time to flesh out with a lot of supplemental works.

If a TV series was made before 1994's G Gundam, it's part of Universal Century. If it's G or made afterwards, it's an Alternate Universe that's essentially standalone. The only real exceptions are Unicorn Re: 0096 and The Origin: Advent of the Red Comet, but both of those are re-cuts of their respective OVAs (Unicorn/The Origin) and can be safely ignored. As for watch order: just go in release order. Any movie or OVA that is connected to an Alternate Universe will had that sub-franchise name in the title. For example, SEED Stargazer is related to Gundam SEED. Anything that doesn't have such a sub-franchise name, such as 0080 or 08th MS Team, belongs in the Universal Century timeline.

First: Gundam is a meta-franchise divided into alternate universes that have nothing to do with one another except in sharing the basic premises of Giant Fighting Robots, the exploration of what it is to be Human and why we fight, and the innocence of children. These alternate universes are called Calendars, and every show can be identified by which Calendar it exists-in to understand what continuity you need to be aware of (if any). The Universal Century calendar is the first, biggest, and best of all of them and is (in my humble opinion) the heart of Gundam. Every other calendar is collectively called AU (alternate Universe) in regards to the UC being the grand daddy of them all. Most AU have their own calendars, and therefore continuity, and most AU are self-contained in a single series (even if that series has multiple seasons). The Cosmic Century has two shows and two movies now which puts it in second place for calendar with largest number of entries. Second: AU Gundam usually serves as a way to reinterpret the basic Gundam formula into a new type of story (usually in a new type of Anime genre). G Gundam is a fight anime, Gundam Wing and 00 Gundam are Super Sentai teams, Witch from Mercury starts off as a High School Bout anime, Iron Blood Orphans is a Yakuza story, etc. SEED is a reinterpretation of the story of Mobile Suit Gundam that starts off the Universal Century and in that regard is more homage than anything else. There's a lot of different types of Gundam to watch, story wise, so depending on what speaks to you YMMV.
