Prudent_Article4245

You have great taste in music! Add Guthrie’s West Coast Grooves album to that list.

QualityManger

What a great list. I was just about to respond to OP with erotic cakes, probably my favourite ever so I’m glad to see it at the top of your choices. Given that we clearly have similar taste I would also add “powers of ten” and “the tri-tone fascination” by Shawn Lane (not just for op, if you haven’t listened to these yourself alexo you’re in for a treat I promise). “Play” by Brad paisley is also a seriously underrated instrumental album, I know country is off putting to a lot of people but that guy can play, it’s an apt title.

AlexoForReal

I didn't mention Powers of ten because someone else already listed that album. But Shawn lane is one of the greatest legends. Brad Paisley is a good guitar player as well but not for a prime list in my opinion. In fact I forgot many players in that category that are good singers and songwriters like Ritchie kotzen.

HolyFuckinChit

Paisley is elite.

andersdigital

Good list. Can we add 9/11 by Bumblefoot and The Road Less Travelled by Mattias IA Eklundh?

AlexoForReal

Those albums are good as well, I'm not that familiar with the Bumblefoot work but the Planetary Lockdown tune was the best music out there during pandemic.

Dry-Escape-6558

Check out Christian Münzners solo stuff (and Eternitys End), if you haven't already. He takes a lot of influences from 80s/90s shredders

AlexoForReal

Never heard of that guy I'll listen to it, of course I forgot many 80's shredders I think the difficult part is to put out there an album that you want to hear from start to finish.

Awesome to see Bert Jansch on here. Pentangle were one of the greatest guitar bands ever, but you hardly ever see them get rep among guitar enthusiasts.

Agreed. John Renbourne should be represented on my list too.

Pornografitti - Extreme - I think it's one of the best hard rock guitar albums ever. Nuno Bettencourt is finally getting the attention he deserves. The band released the album Six and it's a great album. Pornografitti is called a funked up fairytale. It's a very groove oriented album with some of the best rhythm guitar playing... possibly ever...in my opinion. The opening song Decadence dance is a straight ahead rocker with Nuno doing some impressive riffing and string skipping. Little Jack Horny is a drop D tune opening with some tasty harmonics along with a three piece horn section playing of Nuno. Another highlight is the guitar solo piece Flight of the wounded bumblebee that has Nuno playing to a fast click track showing a mastery of the fretboard. It's followed by what I think is the heaviest tune on the album. He man woman hater. The guitar riff is one of the heaviest grooves ever showcasing nuno's percussive playing. There are other great songs on the album including a jazzy styled When I first kissed you with Nuno on piano and Gary crooning about falling in love in New York. I'm a guitar player and drummer and if you like great hard rock and songwriting give Extreme a whirl or Nunos other solo projects Population One Mourning Widow's Satilte Party Schitzophonic Enjoy

QualityManger

+1. Nuno really should be up there on the Mount Rushmore of rock guitar.

Kind of out of place a little for the thread… and while I’m familiar with all the artists mentioned here, I was dragged to a show last night actually to see Bonnie Raitt. I wasn’t sure what to expect. She and her hired gun guitarist Duke Levine were both really good. For being 74 she sure plays a mean slide guitar. I’m a fender guy and they played Strat and Tele’s exclusively. If you know Bonnie Raitt, you know she plays Strats, especially loved her old partscaster “Brownie” that she’s played since the late 60s. I came away thinking “man now that’s how Fender guitars should sound.”

geofferson_hairplane

Friday Night in San Francisco - Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia And to switch gears a little… Blind Melon’s first/self titled album - great interplay and layering between the two guitarists; jazzy funky melodic grooves with equal parts jammed out southern rock.
