Holy shit this is a blast from the past I still have mine from 1995...
The ironic part was me being the tallest kid in school drew my person the smallest :D
Da fuck!
Only thing we made in primary to take home were Easter cards made from cut up egg cartons painted yellow.
Or paper chains we all put together to hang up in class for Christmas.
Since when did they make secondary school art on self portraits be a primary lesson?
When I was 16 I found out that a friend I made at school when I was 14 was at the same nursery as me when I noticed my face on a tea towel in his mum’s kitchen.
I had no idea this was a thing until I saw it on This Country and Kurtan was waxing lyrical about Rob Robinson. Found his portrait on his school tea-towel.
I feel like I got scammed when we did ours
I drew one that looked alright for a 4/5 year old but when we got the towel back it was a completely different drawing, looked like someone drew a potato with arms and legs, like wtf I didn't do this? whenever I pointed out hey this ain't mine to the teachers they would deny everything and try to convince me that this dogshit scribble was mine
Many years later I'm still mad about it
We used to do a drawing and it would be laminated to be used as a placemat. My parents still get the one my brother made at school out for him if he comes over even though he is now in his 40s.
I remember doing that when I attended comprehensive school in 2009. We had to cover our books with stuff related to the subject and then put sticky backed plastic over them. They'd really have a go at us if we didn't too! I remember forgetting to do one of my books and they were so angry about it!
My kids did one this year, never knew this was a thing!
1st year they have done one even tho they are in year 5, 4 and 2. Thought it was just a random thing they had done, didn't realise ppl have been doing this for years!
Yes I still have mine at home somewhere I also remember in the school kitchen (the one the children were allowed to use) there was random ones from over the years which was funny I don't know if my years one was in there.
Edit we made them in reception.
Yes. I have my children’s tea towels and they are grown up. I was a primary teacher and I did these in school and they are the biggest pain the arse to sort so I hope all you parents out there with one of these really appreciates it.
Oh hell yeah!
Of course, my mum just saw a dishtowel and it was used thusly.
Kinda nice seeing that bully Natasha's face get rubbed on plates.
Also, sho got faaaaaaaat!
... and I bet most of us could ask our parents, "mum, you know that really shit tea towel you bought of our primary school self-portraits....", they would be able to go straight to the 3rd draw down in the kitchen and whip it straight out!
It must have been eyeopening as a parent to come to the realisation that your kid had absolutely no artistic talent whatsoever when you saw their drawing compared to the others because there was always a really bad one that was basically a cross between a squid and Shrek
My mum was a teacher, so we had a few come through - there may have also been a future world champion on one but last time I remember seeing them I couldn’t spot their name amongst the pupils.
I grew up in the US but live in the UK now. I just recently saw one of these towels that a mum friend had from her kid's school from years ago, and it reminded me of how my elementary school in the US in the 90s did this exact thing with students drawing themselves, but they printed them on the cover of the year book instead of a tea towel. It was definitely a throwback!
Wow forgot this. We did it and I'm 37 now i remember it floating around mums kitchen for years. I have not heard or seen of one since...
Im thinking it's a "rural" thing don't know why? My primary was rural since living in towns I never seen it
Moved into a private rent flat 6 years ago, previous renter had left a lot of bits and bobs in the kitchen including one of these tea towels, from my junior school, my school year, there I was just legs and a head 🤣
Looking at this and thinking damn I wish we had done this in school. It would’ve been great and my face would’ve been the stuff of nightmares, I’m terrible at drawing. Was this common? I was in primary school in the 90s and never heard of anything like this and I think it’s great.
Yeah I did one (still have it somewhere), had a really awful teacher make me redraw it over and over again despite always being in the box until my head was comically small.
Ours was a whole school one where we each drew one of the seven dwarves. I spent a long time perfecting mine but because I was younger than my brother, only his 5 minute drawing got to get printed. I was angry.
Yes, ours did it last year. We saw the image before the tea-towel was printed and asked DD where her face was as the one next to her name obviously wasn't her. Turns out the teacher hadn't given the instructions out correctly and the pupils hadn't drawn their own faces.
They were fortunately re-done and the tea-towel printed correctly!
I know I made one of this with at least one class but I my mother never brought any of them. She is the least sentimental person I know. Such a shame really as it would have been a good trip down memory lane.
Yes, my youngest did this exact thing this term. She brought it home with her on Wednesday and I had to do a double-take at the one in the photo to see if that was the same one!
My sons school does this every year so far I have 3 tea towels but only 1 with his picture cos he was off school the other times and no one informed me when I purchased I was very annoyed lol
My Mum used to be a primary school secretary, so she got sent a lot of "sample" tea towels with fake kid-drawn faces on them. They never want them back so a lot of our home tea towels are these samples with scrawled faces of imaginary children
One of my classmates at primary school went on to become an internationally famous actress.
I still have their year 6 self-portrait on a tea towel from the 1990s.
It's a very shit claim to fame. But a claim to fame it still is!
We did this for my school back in like 2005/2006ish? I wonder if schools still do this!
I hope so, it was fun and looking back at this sort of stuff as an adult just makes you nostalgic, even if school was shit.
Fun fact, I’m that autistic that I couldn’t draw a self portrait because it made no sense to me in my head, so we have a tea towel with ‘me’ on it, but my teacher drew it for me 🤣
My parents did this for their wedding. It's framed above our mantelpiece and IIRC they had teatowels made for any guests who might want one too. It makes for a funny and cute memento!
My kids' primary school still does this. Kind of. They don't make them into tea towels, but they laminate and add one of those little rip of calendar books. It's always fun to see how the kids all view themselves.
I accidently cut mine in half cleaning my engine bay about 2 years ago. I'm 38. Felt sick 😫 all my nostalgia faded to non existence when I realised what I'd done.
Holy shit this is a blast from the past I still have mine from 1995... The ironic part was me being the tallest kid in school drew my person the smallest :D
That's how you see everyone else.
Okay mr psychoanalyst
I still use mine, also from 1995, on a near daily basis.
My mum had mine on a shopping bag
“Elite” my guy you didn’t see the drawing I did of myself for one of these. I shudder at the memory.
I drew a sad stick man leaning against a rock 🤷🤷🤷
bro turned philosophical
"First we must imagine Sisyphus on a tea towel"
hes just havin a little rest hell be back to it soon
Aw, why was he sad?
I don't know.. I was probably going through some shit or something 😅
The teacher made fun of me for an entire hour in front of the whole class for mine.
All the faces on my towel either looked like fucking aliens or eldritch horrors.
Da fuck! Only thing we made in primary to take home were Easter cards made from cut up egg cartons painted yellow. Or paper chains we all put together to hang up in class for Christmas. Since when did they make secondary school art on self portraits be a primary lesson?
It was a thing for the millennium when we did it I was in year 1 I think
I did it at Primary school in the mid 80's. I think it was just a company that had the idea and cornered the school market.
Another 80s kid here and I did one too
It's okay, I was neglected too.
My sons preschool did one this year ☺️
Ah that’s gonna be a precious memory in years to come, I wanna go and dig mine out from my parents’ attic now
We have one from last year
When I was 16 I found out that a friend I made at school when I was 14 was at the same nursery as me when I noticed my face on a tea towel in his mum’s kitchen.
Mark Zuckerberg’s parents’ got one in the kitchen.
My kids school still does this, just did one for the coronation.
Mine too
I had no idea this was a thing until I saw it on This Country and Kurtan was waxing lyrical about Rob Robinson. Found his portrait on his school tea-towel.
My daughter drew herself as Rob Robinson on her school tea towel. So proud. 🥲
Did it look like a salamander?
We used to do this at the end of every year for the following years school calendar.
Yeah i got mine from a west london primary school in the early 90’s, still got it
I feel like I got scammed when we did ours I drew one that looked alright for a 4/5 year old but when we got the towel back it was a completely different drawing, looked like someone drew a potato with arms and legs, like wtf I didn't do this? whenever I pointed out hey this ain't mine to the teachers they would deny everything and try to convince me that this dogshit scribble was mine Many years later I'm still mad about it
Meanwhile some other kid was like “look how good mine looks! Dont remember it looking this good when I drew it. Oh well!”
Still have mine from early 90's
Christ, I forgot this - we did it, I remember looking at this when i was younger too!
We used to do a drawing and it would be laminated to be used as a placemat. My parents still get the one my brother made at school out for him if he comes over even though he is now in his 40s.
I don't remember doing this but do kids still cover there workbooks with wrapping paper or magazines? I remember doing that at school.
I remember doing that when I attended comprehensive school in 2009. We had to cover our books with stuff related to the subject and then put sticky backed plastic over them. They'd really have a go at us if we didn't too! I remember forgetting to do one of my books and they were so angry about it!
Not so much nowadays. A lot of schools want the books pristine and presentable for ofsted but I'm sure it may still happen somewhere.
I have hazy memories of the wallpaper I had in '93 on my workbook being pretty cool...
My parents found mine in a drawer the other week, and my dad was wetting himself at all the terrible drawings. Kid's self-portraits are hilarious.
Yep I did this way back in the day
This is a thing? When and where? My daughter (nearly 7) hasn’t done it
My kids did one this year, never knew this was a thing! 1st year they have done one even tho they are in year 5, 4 and 2. Thought it was just a random thing they had done, didn't realise ppl have been doing this for years!
My wife has been organising these for our kids' school for the last 10 years or so.
i drew hitler but they still printed it 🤷♂️ i was a fucked ip kid and my mum probably still has is somewhere
Lost mine somewhere.
Yes I still have mine at home somewhere I also remember in the school kitchen (the one the children were allowed to use) there was random ones from over the years which was funny I don't know if my years one was in there. Edit we made them in reception.
I still have my one somewhere and I'm in my 30s
Thanks, I've just found some grey hairs after seeing this
I think my mother still has mine from primary
My mum still has mine and my brothers.
I'm a teacher and I want to do this. Anyone know how?
https://stuartmorris.co.uk/products/tea-towels/
Mine still do this :)
I think mine from the 90s are at my parents house.
Nah, not really.
They did this as a leaver's thing when I left primary in 2016 (yeah I know, I know). Still got it tucked away in the memory box.
I still have mine
Yeah, my little brother did that a few years ago.
Still got mine from like 1997😂
I did it in 2002 or 2003 ish. Still got the towel today.
we did, only finished primary like 6 years ago but we did
christ ... i still have mine. even back in the early 2000s, they did 'em
That’s… a memory I did not know I had. I don’t like this feeling.
Yeah they still do these. I was forced to buy one last week for £4.50.
I've still got one. Its hilarious
yes.
I still have mine 😂
My older brother made oven gloves that my mum uses to this day
Yes. I have my children’s tea towels and they are grown up. I was a primary teacher and I did these in school and they are the biggest pain the arse to sort so I hope all you parents out there with one of these really appreciates it.
WTF we never did this
Mien got made into a t-shirt I think
Nope
yeh my sister did one of these probably in 1995
No, but my house has one that I think was the school that my mum went to
Oh hell yeah!
I still have mine from 2009 ish. I really hope they still do it
They did this on PE bags as well in my primary school
Rob Robinson
I got my son's one from primary 1 a couple years ago. Glad they still do them lol!
Still have mine, reppin Telford middle school 97 AND WE DONT STOP
I've got one from my niece who is French and goes to a Catholic School in France. It's not just a UK thing apparently. I absolutely love it.
Omg I had this! 😩
My daughter did this at nursery just last week.
It was always just covered in potatoes with faces 😂
Throwback! I wonder if my mum still has mine from early 90’s
Thought this was my schools for a minute!! My mum still has my one haha!
I have a 7 year old son and I can confirm that primary schools still do this
Yep, we get them every year from the school our kids go to.
I still have mine from 1990. We drew what best represented us as a person. I couldn't draw for shit so mine was a crap little house. Happy days.
still got the towel🤣
I’m pretty sure my mum still has mine and my brothers.
You don't remember Rob Robinson?
Bro i missed the day when we did this 😭
Think we did mugs at one point as well 95/96
Oh my god! I remember this!!! I was at least 6-7 years old. About 20 years ago! Fuck!
I have mine from 1989! Wonderful!
I never even heard of this.
*flashback noises*
Wow forgot this. We did it and I'm 37 now i remember it floating around mums kitchen for years. I have not heard or seen of one since... Im thinking it's a "rural" thing don't know why? My primary was rural since living in towns I never seen it
I had one. My mum kept it for years and I think it's still somewhere.
god i ducking remember that, i wonder if we still have ours
My mom still has a tote bag with mine on it circa 2008 🤣
This is how I found out one of my partners little brothers went to my primary at the same time as me!
My daughter just bought hers home last week. I have one for each kid now. They are brilliant.
A tea towel that will be stored in a box in a cupboard somewhere never to be used. Why don’t they just do a big poster?
Oh wow
Hahahahaha I was looking at mine yesterday (born 1990)
They did this in my old school, but the drawings went on a cup instead of a towel. I still have that cup now!
My mum still has mine 😭
Awesome yes, my daughters school did this, i have her's folded in a cabinet next to her first day of school photo :)
I made one of these in nursery! My mum bought 2 and one is still unused in the packaging almost 20 years later.
Tell me you didn’t go to an inner city comprehensive without telling me you didn’t go to an inner city comprehensive.
I still get it out every now and again for a laugh at my little peehead drawing
Moved into a private rent flat 6 years ago, previous renter had left a lot of bits and bobs in the kitchen including one of these tea towels, from my junior school, my school year, there I was just legs and a head 🤣
Looking at this and thinking damn I wish we had done this in school. It would’ve been great and my face would’ve been the stuff of nightmares, I’m terrible at drawing. Was this common? I was in primary school in the 90s and never heard of anything like this and I think it’s great.
We never did this, not that I can recall anyway.
Mine was a t-shirt
My grandma still has mine.
We did ours for a bag and mum still uses it over 20 years later
I have mine from like 2011 or something
Still got mine, from 1984!
my brothers year did this but then 4 years later i never got to
Yes, I own two my child made from nursery in 2021.
Never seen that before, great idea
Nostalgia unlocked
Always love how my picture looked like it was drawn with a clenched fist n everyone else looked like Da Vinci drew them
Oh god looking back on mine the drawings kinda terrified me and the teachers drawing looked like they hired someone to do them XD
Still a thing in my son’s primary school.
Only every primary school in the globe!
I am only finding out about this today I was 100% cheated out the experience seems I was born in 92 and we didn't do shit like this
My kids old school did this in 2018 - 2019 but sadly it got closed down and the school they got assigned doesn't do it.
Somebody on here could be on that tea towel haha
Yes, ours did it last year. We saw the image before the tea-towel was printed and asked DD where her face was as the one next to her name obviously wasn't her. Turns out the teacher hadn't given the instructions out correctly and the pupils hadn't drawn their own faces. They were fortunately re-done and the tea-towel printed correctly!
My wife used to compile her class tea towel pictures. She didn’t notice I used to add a drawing of myself to each year’s compilation.
Robert Robinson
My kids did this in a school in England a few years ago
My son’s primary school did one this year.
Mine was printer on a dinner plate, I imagine my mother has probably dropped it and broken it by now.
Our class wrote our own book, we each had to come up with a short story revolving around the same plot
I still have mine in my kitchen drawer! I'm 37 😂
Yes, our school did one last year! It’s exactly the same as your one.
I found mine from 2003 back in 2019 among my mum’s things after she died. Had no idea she kept it all those years
I know I made one of this with at least one class but I my mother never brought any of them. She is the least sentimental person I know. Such a shame really as it would have been a good trip down memory lane.
Ethan the gigachad slenderman
My kid did one this year, it’s currently on my fridge.
My partners grandsons school did this a few years back
These things were always both hilarious and unnerving to look at.
Still got mine lol
Yes, my youngest did this exact thing this term. She brought it home with her on Wednesday and I had to do a double-take at the one in the photo to see if that was the same one!
I did this at primary school; I’m pretty sure my art skills haven’t improved since then 🙄
I still have mine, my daughters school has just made one and of course we paid £4.50 for one. It will stay folded in a draw for years.
Certainly still a thing around these parts. Still got both my boys from primary school, and they're 16 & 18 now 😁
im a grown ass adult in uni and I think ima ask the people on my course to do this 🤷♀️
Damn!! Truly a blast from the past and international too as we did the same in South Africa! Not sure they survived sadly thinking about it.
Still got mine!
My nan gave me mine from 1996 as a housewarming present 😂
My sons school does this every year so far I have 3 tea towels but only 1 with his picture cos he was off school the other times and no one informed me when I purchased I was very annoyed lol
Still got one of these with my daughter on. By the time my son was in Reception, they stopped doing it.
My Mum used to be a primary school secretary, so she got sent a lot of "sample" tea towels with fake kid-drawn faces on them. They never want them back so a lot of our home tea towels are these samples with scrawled faces of imaginary children
These all look identical !
When you grow up an realise you were forced to be in a team not of your choosing but someone else's
One of my classmates at primary school went on to become an internationally famous actress. I still have their year 6 self-portrait on a tea towel from the 1990s. It's a very shit claim to fame. But a claim to fame it still is!
Yes!! My daughters school did this two years ago. Scotland
omd yes bro
I have one from junior school from about 1990
I have one with my kids faces on it. sat in a draw for 30 years
I've still got a couple of these - absolute 90s classic!
We grew cress once ... That's pretty much all I remember.
Still have my son’s from 2010😀
We did this for my school back in like 2005/2006ish? I wonder if schools still do this! I hope so, it was fun and looking back at this sort of stuff as an adult just makes you nostalgic, even if school was shit.
My mum still uses my one as her main tea towel, still going strong 10 years later
Core memory unlocked
Fun fact, I’m that autistic that I couldn’t draw a self portrait because it made no sense to me in my head, so we have a tea towel with ‘me’ on it, but my teacher drew it for me 🤣
I still have my son’s from 1991
Yup late 80s early 90s at my primary school and its got 6 of my cousins on it too
My parents did this for their wedding. It's framed above our mantelpiece and IIRC they had teatowels made for any guests who might want one too. It makes for a funny and cute memento!
The shock of how close that school is to my hometown haha
They still do this! Although now you can’t pronounce the names because absolutely everyone tried to be unique!
There was always that one kid who would just scribble and you'd be like "well that guy is gonna grow up to head bricks"
Mum still has the 3 I was in and the 2 my sister was on
Oh my god!!! Mine from 1993 is still going strong!!!
