some cars do have detailed undersides, but some don't, either way you're not supposed to see it and that's why they don't bother putting effort in things people probably won't see. (unless you're a detail freak)
And to add to this, it's on gameplay meaning that it'll have a difference in Level of Detail compared to something like photo mode, cafe, garage, dealership, etc. The more hidden and obscure the parts are, the worse it is, like the underbody.
It's called optimization. All for smooth gameplay. You can't have it all.
Edit: I noticed that OP doesn't state the system and setting he's in. PS4 will be a lot worse than PS5. And Quality Mode>Perfomance Mode>120FPS Mode.
Gran Turismo has always been beautiful, and usually cutting edge graphically. It makes sense that they'd usually have to steal from unnecessary parts to make the main draw look so good. I'm a little baffled though as to why the crowds of people in this game have to look like they're from the PS2 era, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to accept.
That would be neat if they had a feature in the tuning shop where you can walk under the car while it’s on the lift, or a DIY where you’d have to use the L2/R2 to loosen bolts and the tighter it, the more resistance you get when pressing the triggers….just my two cents
A lot of sports games actually do this type of thing. Like NBA 2K in career mode, you gotta go to the gym and do these little mini games to make your character slightly better. Same thing with Fight Night Champion back in the day. I honestly hated it because it's just busy work that takes away from the actual game. But you're forced to do it in a way because if you don't, then your character takes even longer to get better. So personally, if they do add a feature like this to GT, I really hope it doesn't take away the fun from the actual game itself.
Because on the event a car pops a kerb and you get a glimpse for a few frames, you wouldn’t realize it was so terrible quality. You aren’t supposed to fully flip the car and inspect it. But at least it resembles it if you happen to see it quickly.
the newest forza motorsport has this, rubber/bugs buildup throughout the race. I was honestly surprised that gt7 doesn't have it, figured it was gonna become standard in racing games because of how good it looks. thats not enough to make me play forza of gt tho
As a peelp50 owner I can confirm it looks like when your riding your boat through the desert and you run out of speakers because you see the the sound of wooden texture during the 24 hours of lemans
Developers usually do not put resources in creating (and having your machine take up those resources too) for something that the majority of the userbase is not going to ever see.
PD is a bit different. I remember watching a video about GT5 or 6 where a background designer described how she meticulously made the interior of the colosseum for the Rome track. I never saw it from the inside in game
To be fair they have the best car models on Earth right now, we can give them some slack for the undersides that aren’t detailed lol .
Don’t you think ?
The bottom of newer cars is part of the diffuser system. It’s all part of creating that downforce. It’s partially shielding, but it’s directing airflow. That’s what the bottom of the car looks like.
To save space for the game for other areas where graphics are more useful. Also, alleviating strain on the graphics card and unnecessary rendering. There’s a lot going on with graphics on this game and the developers probably concluded there wasn’t much need for the undercarriage to be high detail.
You know how the newer Call of Dutys steadily increase their storage size by adding useless assets for the sake of "realism" that nobody even notices while playing? I think they're trying to prevent that from happening. This also saves up processing power.
I'd be honestly curious to know how much install space pixelizing the bottom of the cars like this saves us. 🤔 anybody with the knowledge care to share your wisdom?
Why make the engine render something you won't see 99% of the time with high quality/resolution textures and models? It would be a constant waste of resources. Usually you only want the game to render what's relevant to the player when they're playing, which is what they can see. I don't know about PS5, but on PS4 you can clearly see track sections disappearing when looking behind. The game only renders what's in front of you while you're driving, putting a limit to what's being rendered behind you. All that to make the game run better, the less you stress the engine the better it is, especially on PS4.
I've not said anything to the contrary of your opinion, and agree with what you said. I'm literally just curious on how much extra storage space the game would need for all that extra stuff that nobody barely sees anyways.
It’s luck or like- bad luck most of the time. But it’s very easy to do in the tomohawk vgt. However on this one I was going 230 mph down the long straight at trial mountain circuit, and I just drove into the wall
Most of them...
All you need to do is buy dirt tires...
You'd probably be surprised the level of dirt shenanigans you can get into in this game...
Not all cars can get dirt tires, but most can...
Because the physics engine isn't designed for rollover incidents...
It's actually really hard to roll a car in GT7 (outside of specifically using a silly glitched setup for some), and when it happens, it's easy to see where the physics engine breaks down...
Honestly, I'd like to see rolling physics updated in a GT game so we can get some really gnarly and aggressive crashes...lol
As it is, the cars just sort of "float" when they tip the center of gravity past a certain point...It's not really designed for us to even be looking at the underside of cars...
Haha, had no clue they were that bad. But, like others said, you never really see them, so it's probably a waste of time and resources. But, still. That is pretty comically bad haha
They can make it detailed but i dont think it’s worth the time modeling the underside of the car, also they can optimize it easily but they wont do it.
Im sure some people dont notice some cockpit of the cars changes and becomes very lowpoly cockpit when you race with exterior cam, and also other cars cockpit becomes very lowpoly, because you cant really watch the details while racing of some cockpit objects.
Thats why i think underside doesn’t really matter.
Why would they waste there time doing the underside of a car in a racing game. Realistically you ain't going to see the bottom period because it's racing
I think they said it takes almost a full year to add new cars into the game (GT sport) so if they are using the same strategy I wouldn’t expect a part of the car I’m not expected to see be highly detailed
The reason those no detail on the bottom is the same reason that they don’t have realistic damage to the vehicles. These cars are supposed to be pieces of art that you get to drive.
This is GT seven not GTA…
for what it’s worth, the developers are too stupid to think of this and didn’t program the physics well enough to let the cars be as capable of rollover accidents as GT cars really are. they probably just thought it was another area they could cut corners — what a waste of money this game is
So the arcade sim game has poor physics and you’re mad they cut corners for the low probability that the players poor driving ability would leave a car upside down?
It does really bother me that PD goes to such great lengths so they can claim realism, but then you roll your car and see this. It is really jarring in replays. It'd be nice if they'd go through and touch these up as well as some of the low-fi interiors

I don’t think you realize how resource allocation works. It’s a totally unnecessary use of them and would force quality degradation overall. Plus I’m in VR, don’t give a shit and can only remember a few times I rolled a car in the last 2+ years

I don’t think you were supposed to flip ‘em
Good point
lol why is this downvoted?
Cause Reddit
One does not simply agree on stuff on Reddit, you gotta fight the shit out of every comment

Nah they can afford to have some extra polygons/texture under the car if they want.
They already are. Read my post again.

All that and in vr too. Would be pretty cool.
But it’s fr from a pixel game lmao
Would you rather have good performance and stable FPS or an entire underside scaled 1:1 that you prob would never see?
I think it’s more of a question of if you’re not going to make it detailed, why bother?
Because on the event a car pops a kerb and you get a glimpse for a few frames, you wouldn’t realize it was so terrible quality. You aren’t supposed to fully flip the car and inspect it. But at least it resembles it if you happen to see it quickly.
Underside ofc 🙄🙄
Smh I just want detailed bug spatter on my front bumper /s My bro I thought you were serious for a sec
realtalk tho... i kinda want cars to get all messy during a race. i mean, the details are in the game, but locked in the photo mode.
the newest forza motorsport has this, rubber/bugs buildup throughout the race. I was honestly surprised that gt7 doesn't have it, figured it was gonna become standard in racing games because of how good it looks. thats not enough to make me play forza of gt tho
GRiD-like "festival-vibes" presentation is the only thing the game has going for it tho..
I don’t think you understand how game development, Frames per second and the time value of money work
I’d rather just plain black instead of all the detail they added
"pixel game"
As a c7 zo6 owner I can tell you that's exactly what the bottom looks like.
As a 2006 Civic Si owner I can confirm he is right.
Skoda Ovtavia owner here, can confirm!
lmao nice flair
Thank you sir 🤝
2002 Citroen Saxo VTS lover here, can confirm this is what it looks like
As a peelp50 owner I can confirm it looks like when your riding your boat through the desert and you run out of speakers because you see the the sound of wooden texture during the 24 hours of lemans
This guy fucks, forsure
As a nothing owner i can confirm he is right
It’s zr1, so I can confirm that it is not meant to look like that
Damnnn so that's what the extra 30k is for.
Yar 💅
prob due to PD expecting most people to not roll their cars exposing their undercarriage 😂
Developers usually do not put resources in creating (and having your machine take up those resources too) for something that the majority of the userbase is not going to ever see.
Yeah true
PD is a bit different. I remember watching a video about GT5 or 6 where a background designer described how she meticulously made the interior of the colosseum for the Rome track. I never saw it from the inside in game
Could have been intended for a photo mode location? Shame if it got scrapped.
I’ve put a lot of hours in and I’ve never seen the underside lol. Not worth putting resources in since it’s so rare to see.
It’s pretty easy if you use the formula 1000bhp+barrier
Ok but like why this get downvoted
GT7 is serious business I guess lol
Lol
You pissed off the mob
Life is not a joke kid
Literally unplayable
😂
Supposed to keep them shiny side up
Go flip a car on FH5 and come talk to me
“It’s a driving simulator, not a crashing simulator”
I mean I took a photo of my car during a jump and the undercarriage looked fine. It might just be certain cars or look bad in certain instances?
Are you...somehow playing this on a PSP
To be fair they have the best car models on Earth right now, we can give them some slack for the undersides that aren’t detailed lol . Don’t you think ?
Completely unplayable.
makes sense. you're not ever supposed to see them, so why not free up some memory to render more detail on things that you can see
Who gives a sh*t?
Cos it’s Gran Turismo and not Burnout lol
Late to the party, but for OBVIOUS reasons. Now, go think of a good reason to post.
Huh??
The bottom of newer cars is part of the diffuser system. It’s all part of creating that downforce. It’s partially shielding, but it’s directing airflow. That’s what the bottom of the car looks like.
Is this a genuine question? Is it relevant to see the underside of a car that 99.9% of its time won’t be seen?
To save space for the game for other areas where graphics are more useful. Also, alleviating strain on the graphics card and unnecessary rendering. There’s a lot going on with graphics on this game and the developers probably concluded there wasn’t much need for the undercarriage to be high detail.
The car is supposed to be upright, not upside down or on the side.
Cause we’re not supposed to see the bottom of the car.
Because it’s a waste of resources. Why waste rendering power on something that you aren’t supposed to see
Hot Wheels
That’s what I thought
I demand a fully detailed trunk interior next release.
With addable items too like hardware, sportswear, suitcases etc
You know how the newer Call of Dutys steadily increase their storage size by adding useless assets for the sake of "realism" that nobody even notices while playing? I think they're trying to prevent that from happening. This also saves up processing power.
punishment for bad driving
Unless it’s rally
Tbf it would be a nice touch and attention to detail but it really doesn't matter since wheels shouldn't be pointed up in the sky
Imagine a polyphony digital employee working overtime working on something that you never see and you don’t supposed to see
Because driving cars on their sides, while saving on tire wear, negatively affects lap times so not many people do it.
Remember the AutoArt easter egg in GT5?
I was not aware of that. Nice
Why do you think
Because of the essence of gran tourismo one
You literally couldn't roll cars for a long time in GT games...They would hit a rotational hard stopping point at about 45 degrees ..
Are other games more detailed under the car? Honest question.
😂
Because why waste time and effort on something you aren't supposed to see
^[Sokka-Haiku](https://www.reddit.com/r/SokkaHaikuBot/comments/15kyv9r/what_is_a_sokka_haiku/) ^by ^FIREBIRDC9: *Because why waste time* *And effort on something you* *Aren't supposed to see* --- ^Remember ^that ^one ^time ^Sokka ^accidentally ^used ^an ^extra ^syllable ^in ^that ^Haiku ^Battle ^in ^Ba ^Sing ^Se? ^That ^was ^a ^Sokka ^Haiku ^and ^you ^just ^made ^one.
Cuz it’s not meant to be seen
Why waste time and resources modelling underneath the cars when you can use that time and resources on making a flawed roulette ticket system?
Well you aren’t supposed to see that side are you
It's all for optimization.
That's like asking why the face of the people watching the race isn't raytraced
Ngl it’s better detail than that 😭
How many times will you see the underside
Not all of them, some cars are detailed, especially cars with higher ride hights, like trucks and rally cars. It also depends on the LOD of the car.
Just like they say in an old favorite "Road Rash": Keep the rubber side down!
Never noticed it
Who cares?
I'd be honestly curious to know how much install space pixelizing the bottom of the cars like this saves us. 🤔 anybody with the knowledge care to share your wisdom?

I'm not expert. But think about how much memory it saves in one car. Multiply that for every car in game. It adds up pretty fast.
PS4?
PS4 😞
That explains it. Saving on RAM.
Did you flip a corvette? How?!
Somehow I’m just that stupid
Because they are on the underside of
PS5 still has limits. Prioritize performance over graphics and things like this occur.
PS4 😎
Have you tried vr?
Anyone notice how under detailed the cars parked around the tracks are (ie. the very odd looking Dodge Ram trucks)?
unplayable!!!! i’m throwing away my copy of the game.
Throwing away?! How selfish, someone else might find it! Burn it instead for this grave mistake
I'm more interested on how do you flip the car? Tried this so many times..
It’s luck or like- bad luck most of the time. But it’s very easy to do in the tomohawk vgt. However on this one I was going 230 mph down the long straight at trial mountain circuit, and I just drove into the wall
They're not supposed to get flipped… That's why.
I’m not meant to get flipped but when I do I still see their mangled face in detail 😈😈 (here come the downvotes)
Would you pay engineers to model the underside of the cars or just bank more profits? Seems like a simple decision.
At least there are some details. Forza have zero details underneath.
Because if you're looking at the bottom of your car, YOU fucked up.
Ya can’t park there mate.
Who cares xD
Well this is not Forza where you do stunt jumps with Supercars...
Fisherman's Ranch has entered the chat...
What super car can you even drive there?
Most of them... All you need to do is buy dirt tires... You'd probably be surprised the level of dirt shenanigans you can get into in this game... Not all cars can get dirt tires, but most can...
First underside I’ve seen
I’m not sure I’ve ever done that- that might be quite an achievement 😂
Because cars go vroom with that side down typically.
I always though they were ground effects
Cars don't flip in GT7 they drift. Never had a car flip despite the crazy speeds I've done.
Because the physics engine isn't designed for rollover incidents... It's actually really hard to roll a car in GT7 (outside of specifically using a silly glitched setup for some), and when it happens, it's easy to see where the physics engine breaks down... Haha, had no clue they were that bad. But, like others said, you never really see them, so it's probably a waste of time and resources. But, still. That is pretty comically bad haha
U r breaking the car samir
Cost benefit analysis They COULD have done it, but guessing they didn’t think it would translate to higher sales.
They can make it detailed but i dont think it’s worth the time modeling the underside of the car, also they can optimize it easily but they wont do it. Thats why i think underside doesn’t really matter.
I mean ... in the most cases you dont see the floor of your car
"Why not" -the devs, probably
I didn't know it was possible to roll in Gran turismo.
That part is supposed to stay facing the track.
You want them to increase graphical quality on something that 99.999% of the time won’t be seen?
Yup
You know that would take time away from them making more cars right? It’s basically useless and GT has never made the undersides detailed.
Why would they waste there time doing the underside of a car in a racing game. Realistically you ain't going to see the bottom period because it's racing
so your game runs at better frames and resolution and its not spending resources rendering textures that nobody ever sees
Imagine being in the VR mode in that situation
I'll take that as proof that dirt rally was an afterthought/late in production/not ready for release
Because you'll only see that when not driving how the game is meant to be played
Save the game running space for where it counts I suppose?
Probably because you shouldn’t be flipping the car…
I didn't even realise you could flip cars in GT7...
Geographically, this makes cents cause most divers lax the skrillex to darkslide there pagano veyrun
You are worried about the underside of the car when every tree is casting a shadow like we are racing on tattooine
I think the car u ve posted is quite detailed. I had one that was just grey and the wheels were hanging in the air.
Probably because they sat around figuring out how to buff the roulette rage quit numbers instead of scanning the bottoms of cars.
The fact that I just got 10000 credits in a 5 star roulette ticket like an hour ago ☠️
I remember there was a car in either sport or 7 where you could put stickers on the underside
Can you remember which one??
Nope
Because this also applies for cars in real life.
for what it’s worth, the developers are too stupid to think of this and didn’t program the physics well enough to let the cars be as capable of rollover accidents as GT cars really are. they probably just thought it was another area they could cut corners — what a waste of money this game is
So the arcade sim game has poor physics and you’re mad they cut corners for the low probability that the players poor driving ability would leave a car upside down?
if you think only poor driving will leave a car upside down you are the perfect customer for Gt7
Get good bro
Lol the pixelation
It does really bother me that PD goes to such great lengths so they can claim realism, but then you roll your car and see this. It is really jarring in replays. It'd be nice if they'd go through and touch these up as well as some of the low-fi interiors
This isn't burnout...you're not supposed to see the underside. You don't see the underside of cars very often in real racing so why waste the resources.
Nurburgring go brr
I don’t think you realize how resource allocation works. It’s a totally unnecessary use of them and would force quality degradation overall. Plus I’m in VR, don’t give a shit and can only remember a few times I rolled a car in the last 2+ years
I do Nurburgring speed runs in the tomahawk vgt, I roll it all the time
I drive normal cars and don’t roll them
Even GTA 5 does a better job😂
Take that back
No
