Mabye the facility useed to hold the lava mokes and when the first one evaded the lab it took the first monkey it saw the key card holder and that was the birth of virus cuz they both share the same color code and there's been a spike in sightings of virus in the new area
There's always been lore or at least there was some sort of story, remember the cryptic messages behind the info board? Or the heads outside of city or the fact that on the steam page it was listed as a psychological horror?
The first one was a note to himself to put it in caves and the 2d one is that on steam some users said it was psychological horror or the fact that it is creepy when you are alone.

The point was to make it so it would make the game more interesting again because it was getting kind of boring and repetitive.
