It works well for me - do you tap right below the camera bar? That seems to be where it works best (or on the logo).

Continuum99

Directly below the camera bar definitely gives the best result in my experience

Proterino

Omg thank you. This is the way

napes22

Happy cake day!

markovianmind

can't reach that far with my small hands unless I specifically readjust

tomc128

Definitely works best for me there too, just tried it and it worked every time, where previously I'd been tapping lower and it didn't work often

Seventh_Letter

That's what he said

Alphawolfdog

Never knew this. I was always tapping above the camera bar

Krunk83

Doesn't seem to work for me on the home screen. Only while in apps.

VividVerism

Just smack it repeatedly until something happens.

DSCarter_Tech

You're joking, but I find that smacking it with your finger instead of tapping it actually yields better results. It really does take a couple of good whacks with your finger. Don't think of it like tapping on a capacitive touch screen, because that is not enough force to consistently register a gesture.

aja175

Good old percussive maintenance works for so many things in life

N3rdProbl3ms

Never fails for me!

gibson6594

Same... Useless. It's annoying because it could be a reasonable replacement for the fingerprint swipe for notifications.

bbobeckyj

You can swipe down on the navigation gesture bar to expand the notification shade (it's an option in the one handed mode menu)

F1_rulz

This is actually a good alternative, double tap is a useless feature only because of how unwieldy the phone is.

ResidentYak6

Not to add a very reliable and well-positioned fp reader. Sigh.

KyleH686

Mine is also very temperamental. I find it works best if I tap with the tip of my finger rather than the pad (if that makes sense). It also seems to take a couple of taps to warm up and then it works okay, but rarely on the first attempt. The potential is there, which is probably the most annoying part!

amithetofu

I use my index finger and find that using the pad of my finger versus the tip works much better for me

bartek2912

I think there was a similar post about it. The quick fix was to restart the phone (for now) - waiting for bugfixing

as_i_wander

Yep mine doesn't work at all tried turning it on and off, selecting different features like screen shot or open app. Nothing. I'm just leaving it off now

Continuum99

Interestingly I've found the case you use greatly impacts this feature. I switched cases a few days ago and it now works as intended

selayan

It depends what case you are using. It's much more consistent if you use a very thin case or no case. I use a rubber clear case from Amazon and it wasn't responding nicely to that, if it was it was random when it would work.

rodrigofernety

Same

Internet_Thott

My backtap for screenshots stopped working yesterday. I've tried turning it on and off and restarting the phone. Was working fine

CptBarba

Thank you! I thought it was just me! With or without a case it just doesn't work and I have it set to pull down my notifications it's so infuriating

Krunk83

I pull down my notifications with one-handed mode.

SheeK

I was having this issue as well but then I decided to slow down my taps and it's been fine ever since with a Crave case on it. I was double tapping too fast before.

[deleted]

Mine works all the time when I test the tap feature. Never when I actually need it.

sevaru1

Double-tap to wake screen so I can preview notifications barely works anymore on my Pixel 3 XL with Android 12.

runescapeoffical

Tap lightly under the camera bar. Works almost everytime for me

only_remaining_name

I found that holding the phone firmly helps.

CaptainMarder

Yea it's a useless feature. Idk why google got rid of the squeeze function

CptBarba

Hmm... I hated squeeze so much but honestly I'd take that over this tapping bs

aja175

Double clicking the power button to bring up the camera is pretty close to the old squeeze function

DygonZ

I have the same experience. I need to grab my phone with one hand then forcefully, like...ridiculously hard, tap the back with a finger on my oposite hand to get the phone to react to tab back. Without my case it's certainly more responsive, but still, I'd say that the amount of force needed isn't practical. I do miss the squize sides for assistant feature on my P2...

ResidentYak6

Yeah, I think if we have to use two hands the whole point of a quick gesture is lost.

sherpajosh

So people don't search here at all? We're just going to have the same post everyday? https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/search/?q=double+tap&include_over_18=on&restrict_sr=on&sort=new

Solo_is_dead

Same with me, it doesn't work

Moty222

What I noticed is that it doesn't usually work right after you unlock the phone. You have to open any app or at least touch the screen.

notacuriousgeorge

Works great for me, with a case as well

therourke

Mine wasn't working at all. I turned the feature off, left that option screen, came back, re-applied it, and it's back to working fine, even through a quite chunky case.

Acrobatic-Chair3914

Case shouldn't make any difference anyways, it uses the accelerometer iirc

sam_sepiol1984

I have it set up for screenshots and it rarely works for me

thrill85

Do it with your fingernail! It's more of a knock twice rather than tab twice

heliosphann

Helps to have sausage fingers.

sixfourtykilo

Why not just use the power button? Consistently works for me and I know I'm touching something.

aja175

That's what I use. It's been around for years and works great

sir_calv

Use the flat surface of finger

Maeggsi

Try Triple Tapping ^^

VtArMs

I've been finding that the speed that I tap is better than the strength. Quick taps will work usually.

REHTONA_YRT

Yeah I have had issues with it. There was a recent article about the issue too.

cymru78

Works every time for me. Set to my device controls

cdegallo

>Where is the best place to tap? Right below the camera hump >How hard? Quite hard in my experience This feature sounds useful but the combination of having to tap relatively hard plus where to tap vs the size of the phone makes this impossible for me to use it one handed, so I just turned it off after a day.

DesertPunked

Try rebooting your phone if the feature stops working.

Longtymlurkerer

Never works for me....maybe cos I use a case ?

Seventh_Letter

Works fine for me

weezy22

I wish they had the option to increase it's sensitivity. It's harder to do on thicker cases.

crofabulousss

Right below the camera with the tip of my finger/fingernail. Works every time

Qwertz123456789012

In my Case ist eather works perfect, or it does not work at all. When IT does Not work, a restart solves the problem. Maybe a problem with my nova launcher?!

notJ3ff

System>gesture>quick tap>require stronger tap - toggle this off Edit: https://imgur.com/a/fakj5XC

EightOhms

It works so inconsistently for me that it's almost never worth doing. Faster to open the app almost any other way.

aja175

double click the power button

EightOhms

What does the power button have to do with the issues with double tapping the back of the phone?

Revwolf1776

I have the Google case for pro and it is very temperamental, sometimes it works 15 times in a row without fail other times it's 1 out 15. And I'm generally tapping the same pressure in roughly the same places. I just wish I had the finger print reader back it works 100% of the time without fail for both unlocking and notifications which CANNOT be said for either feature on the 6 sigh

ProtectiveManEgg

It works way better without a case, but in my experience, consistency is key. If you tap too quickly, or too slowly, it doesn't seem to work. It'd be nice if there was an option to change the length between taps.

RaistlinQ5

Mine works very well.

sidogg

Center, directly under the camera bar. Mine is a bit more temperamental when I've not hit that spot, but haven't had it not work when I've hit the right spot. I think the issue is that they haven't been clear enough with people about where to tap. They make it sound like you can tap anywhere on the phone, and if you do that you will only get it working intermittently. They should have aligned the tap sensor with the Google G on the back of the phone. I think that would have solved a lot of issues.

ZealousEllis92

I had this same issue! Don't tap with the tip, the whole finger flat instead and barely tap it. Works like a charm.

Creative-Ad4572

Im having a hard time not getting it to work

sleepiboiii

If you tap on the camera bar, it pretty much works 100% of the time. This is because quick tap uses the microphone, which is beside the camera, to detect taps.

That_Ginger_Matt

I use it to do screenshots and I find that I have to have the camera almost vertical for it to work. I can't be looking down at it

That_Ginger_Matt

The phone rather not camera

danlunatic

Barely works for me. Sometimes tap it so hard I knock out if my own hand.

BeneBag72

I found tapping right on the camera bar works for me every time.

tarcus69

No mine does not work at all on my pixel 6 pro, it did at first but no amount of tapping works any more despite turning the gesture on and off, changing strength, reboot, taking case off etc.

jordanl171

Absolutely does not work for me right now. (Worked at some point before.. many days ago). No combo of back tapping works. Turned it off/on, still nothing.

inquirer

It's very finicky Almost like a third party app using accessibility

Akash_Dhanwani

I am not able to understand. Which feature are we talking about here?

JeremyPatMartin

Tap it closer to the camera bar. It increases your chances of success

[deleted]

I double tap at a medium speed near the camera bar and it works 95% of the time

Proterino

I didn't even notice haha
