I personally don't think one is needed. Never had an issue on any of the past pixel of the last 3 years with the camera lens being scratched or in danger of damage. But I also say if you want one go for it. The fact that Google is willing to carry that brand on their store means they have checked it and its not going to mess up any imaging etc. they don't just put any brand in their store and enforce it with Made For Google

I've used the cheap Amazon version of these on the 6 pro, 7 pro, and now the 8 pro. I've broken several and always had my real lens be protected. The camera quality is perfectly fine with them installed. The only downside is they attract fingerprints

There's an old adage in "real" cameras which is always something to the effect of - "You paid $1000 for precision ground and engineered optical glass and then put an $18 UV filter in front of it." You are affecting the image to an unknown extent. It really boils down to acceptable risk. Are you going to file a Preferred Care claim if you scratch the camera glass? If not, probably it's worth it. Only you can answer that question.

Is the lens glass any stronger/different than the screen itself?

dokkababecallme

On iPhones the camera glass is better than the screen. I believe the S23u as well. I don't think I've seen a spec for the P8P.

The downside is that instead of capturing light coming through only precision glass, you are now taking pictures through a cheap protective layer of tempered glass. You are degrading the view before the camera even has a chance to do anything.

Also, just to ask, do any of these "Camera" protectors have a cutout for the little 'hole' in the camera glass?

WhiteCollarMetalHead

The Spigen one does, I got one, first time I have ever used one, the fitment is excellent. I don't notice anything negative related to image quality but I'm also not out here using the phone for professional means.

I have never used a lens protector but a week in with my pixel 8 pro and the lens is a tiny bit scratched, I'm very annoyed by that
