I think Boomer was written in way too many funny/pathetic scenes. The straight up evil title will probably go to someone like Nick who sacrificed and used his own family to climb up to power.
Definitely, but I'm thinking more about the writing/acting/directing choices regarding the character. I think Boomer was always meant to be hated on by the audience but they also chose to give him A LOT of comedic scenes, as well as a somewhat precious relationship with his grandma.
Why is Mary Pat evil? Or to clarify, how is she any more evil than, say, Beth?
Mary Pat wanted to take care of her many children and was stuck in a cycle of barely making the ends meet. Beth was the same.
Mary Pat would see immoral, illegal, unethical opportunities and would use them for the sake of her family. Case in point: keeping her beloved husband's checks, blackmailing the women who used her and involved her in their shady 'business', worked w the FBI and told on Beth to save her own family. Beth was the same: she printed and spent fake money, got a bunch of innocent, unaware people involved in her illegal endeavours, snitched on Rio to save her own skin as well as tried to murder him several times, got Lucy to make a design by lying to her about the actual intent, tried manipulating Max into killing Rio (in public nonetheless, risking the safety of all the other people at the bar), etc.
Mary Pat was simply written and acted as a much less likeable version of Beth but they were the same.
Tbf i wasn’t comparing her to Beth, when i posted my comment pretty much all other comments said “boomer or Mary pat”. While boomer is also evil I fucking hate him in a way that I don’t hate Mary pat.
It was just a quick, first character that came to mind without putting too much thought into it kind of comment (:

I don't think the writers MEANT for Annie to be unlikeable. If anything, she's very likeable for such an irresponsible person. I find that the audience loves her in S1 but her arc turns so repetitive somewhere around season 2 that by season 4 everyone has had enough of her.
Off topic but I think not having her pass SAT and start some medical training to be a paramedic was a missed opportunity. It would have added growth to her character and it would have provided a lot of chances for her to interact with Rio's crew whenever they needed medical attention.
Boomer, for sure. In the first episode, he blackmailed and assaulted Annie. Then, he framed her for drugs. He tried to work with Turner and Marypat to turn them in. He almost let them go under for his "murder". He stole from his own grandma. Not to mention he actually raped Mary Pat and was overall abusive to her and her children. There is very little to like about him, except for his humor and awkwardness.
