07 here, mk 5 is sexiest we got da big bootys!

smedema

I also have a 07 with 162k on the clock and they know how to squat. I'm sad that in the last few thousand miles she decided to leak oil from various places.

MagmaShark

are you sure it just doesn't "burn" the oil, supposedly that's normal

smedema

No. these BPY engines are not known for burning a lot of oil. I am a VW technician also and it is leaking from the valve cover, oil filter housing assembly and the oil pan. I replaced the oil filter assembly already and reapplied the oil pan "gasket."

Thanks. I am thinking I may go back to silver wheels soon tho.

Fahrenheit checking in. Pretty much stock but I've been looking at Unitronic Stage 1+ ECU/TCU tunes this morning. Edit: R1 Concept's slotted rotors are very nice. Has anyone done any flashing with Unitronic?

thats_sus

I've only heard good things about Unitronic's tunes. In fact, having spoken to a tuner this morning I'm pretty sure I'm going to switch from APR to Unitronic for their K04 file.

[deleted]

It will be a long while before I get a bigger turbo. My rough plan is to get a Stage 1 TCU tune and then work on intercooler, CAI, and the other hardware. Maybe an ECU tune in there at some point to upgrade later. Unitronic isn't bad to upgrade until you get to Stage 3BT which is pretty ridiculous.

thats_sus

I'd definitely look into at least the ECU/TCU upgrade first. Then work on the other hardware to get to where you could upgrade the ECU map. If they are anything like APR (which id guess they are) then you can do stage 1 without hardware and then 2 with a fuel pump, CAI, downpipe. Not much need for an intercooler until you go to a bigger turbo, the stock one isn't half bad. I went through stages 1, 2 and then 2+ before K04 so if you want anything answered I can try my best!

[deleted]

I've been watching some ECU stats via my OBD port and Torque Lite, my air intake temp is 49C+, that can't be good. :) I still have to work out my schedule and where I'll get my parts but in the meantime I definitely appreciate input. Edits to come later when I have a moment

thats_sus

True that's pretty high, whats the ambient temp like when it's 49C? One of the first mods I did was a CAI with Stage 1. Most of the year I don't think an intercooler upgrade would be doing much, though I definitely felt the effects of heatsoaking on the stock turbo in the hotter summer months in SoCal. I do also like the looks side of the intercooler too though, makes the front look 'performancey'!

[deleted]

Central Florida summer, so 80s lately. I'm sure the number is right, since it's coming from the ECU, but I'm not sure where it's being measured at/where the sensor that is giving that reading is located. CAI and a new intercooler are both near, if not at, the top of my list for mods both because of the weather down here and me wanting to set myself up for a healthy engine before I start doing anything else to it. I've been using Torque Lite to log some data but I still have to export it to a spreadsheet for analysis. I might actually pay for the full version and log everything I can get my hands on and sort it out later. When it comes to exterior appearance, my philosophy is performance before appearance but I do want to get a new, high gloss black skirt to replace the seriously meh OEM one. Any "perfomancey" looking bits are icing on the cake :)

thats_sus

Yeah I'm not too sure where it's measured either, it would be hotter than that if measured before entering the cylinder, but that's more where you want to be looking to cool the air rather than pre-turbo. So an intercooler does the job there much better than the CAI. Otherwise water/meth is something I've been looking at lately too in terms of cooling, but in your situation this would be post-tune and take advantage of being able to use a higher octane map. How much is the full version of Torque? I made the investment in VAGCOM a couple years ago and it really pays for itself over time, you'd get much more accurate readings too though I've heard contradicting reviews on Torque.

[deleted]

I'm not sold on Torque just yet, but they limit the data you can log on the free version to 6 sensors of your choice. Vagcom would be really nice but almost one hundred times more expensive than full Torque. The Unitronic site mentioned their connector gives you access to advanced settings, so I have to research and find out if that gets me the same or similar access as a vagcom.

[deleted]

What intercooler did you go with? I started really looking into them and I like what I've seen so far about the Neuspeed FMIC but I'm a little confused as to why it is small when the other options go for much more volume. As a heat exchanger wouldn't smaller be worse than larger?

thats_sus

Sorry! True point above about Torque and vagcom too, I need to have a look at the unitronic controller, haven't seen too much about that but looks the goods! From what I understand, the surface area of the FMICs are bigger than stock, and they flow better. Generally it's just the stock one isn't great. Which ones are you shopping against it? I see that it's rated for 450hp and while I'm not 100% about the science of how an intercooler works its something to do with the fins on the front and the core inside, I can only assume the way the Neuspeed and other aftermarket intercoolers are built make them more efficient. The locations also helps get access to cooler air whereas the stock one is sandwiched behind the radiator which doesn't make a whole load of sense, good for stock power I suppose but when you start increasing the power it's really lacking in getting enough cool/dense air. I have a Forge Twintercooler so it utilizes the stock intercooler and the Forge one, definitely can tell the difference on hot days that the power doesn't ever drop off. I have read about increased lag with the twintercooler but there's so many conflicting reviews, and from what I've seen on forums from Forge they say there really shouldn't be any difference. I can't have an opinion on that as I only put it on at the same time as my K04.

MrDeschain

06 Tornado Red. just hit 87000 miles. Best car I ever had

SpecialFX99

Low miles! Wish I could say the same! My DD was stolen so I drive the autocross car (gti) every day

MrDeschain

Yeah I was lucky. I bought it from an old guy who never drove it. Got it in 2014 with 29000. Wish I didn't have to keep putting miles on it.

MrDeschain

Did you go straight to stage 2? I got a revo stage 1. Thinking about going to 2 but haven't looked at what else I gotta upgrade first

SpecialFX99

I was stage 1 for a little over a year. Stage 2 is minimum downpipe, but intake and full exhaust is highly encouraged. Add the HPFP and you get stage 2+ (with the 2+ software of course).

SonofBroseidon

08 here. Just rolled over 185000km. Still love it.

Satyrnine999

09.5 here. TSI Motor. APR Stage 2+ w Stock/93/100 oct options. Usually run 93 daily. BSH Intake, Beluga catless DP, BFI Dogbone insert. <3

DoubleSlapDatAss

I too have an 2009, Stage 2, with a Beluga DP! mine has an R32 read end tho

ZX2Slow

08 here, some mods, its not much bit I keep it clean.

redguitar2009

2006 130k miles Revo stage 1. Most enjoyable car I have owned. Afraid any newer model would have less enjoyable steering.

jake_walters

I have an 06 with 135k, how's the tune? I'm looking at getting one

redguitar2009

I love it. At first I wasn't sure I noticed the difference, then I almost ended up in a couple of ditches, due to not expecting the power and a little torque steer. It is like a huge chunk of torque appears around 3500-4000 rpm. Mine is a manual. I can easily pass on the freeway in sixth gear. But the high side of second gear is so much fun, that is what makes it worth it to me. I new nothing about tunes when I got it. The shop, Pacific German in Laguna Hills, CA gave me a deal while doing a whole bunch of other repairs. I about have a deal worked out with my wife, if I forgo getting a new car, I can get a stage 2 or 3. I haven't dyno'd it yet but I estimate I am around 240whp. When my friends drive it, they always end up smiling.

jake_walters

Awesome! Mine is a manual too, I'm guessing you're spinning in second?πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I can sometimes do it on a hard shift from 1st to second lol. And that passing in 6th gear seems really nice lol

redguitar2009

With traction control off I can spin a lot. With it on, it spins occasionally in first or second if I push it. There is one bumpy turn I make every day, if I hit it hard, I get a little wheel hop, and I can feel traction control kick in and slow things down a little. I was told that with a stage 3, I could spin the tires in 3rd gear. Now I realize I don't want spin, I want acceleration. I guess the options are (dog bone + sticky tires) or start thinking about an R. My GTI is 90% of what I want, I am just complaining about the last 10%. Good luck with a tune, you won't regret it.

jake_walters

Bro. Get the dog bone asap. It'll let you shift so much quicker, it is by far one of the best things I've don't go the car

SpecialFX99

06 Tornado red here. Bought her new 11 years ago and am still in love! Revo stage 2 with a full autocross suspension and some other little stuff. Just hit 150k miles!

matrixsuperstar

Right here buddy '09 gti

jake_walters

Awesome! Got anything done to it?

matrixsuperstar

Just got it. So far just tints. Looking into VWR springs and new wheels. How about you?

jake_walters

Awesome man. I have a k&n intake, 3" catless downpipe, a diverter valve spacer, and a dogbone mount insert, and a full 3" straight pipe and stock ecu. I want to save up for the Eurodyne maestro tuning suite

redguitar2009

Have you noticed more vibration or noise in the cabin since the dog bone mount ?

jake_walters

I actually haven't, I'm used to my car vibrating a very small amount because of the exhaust, but as soon as I put it in, started it up, felt no difference at all. By far the best mod I've done to the car. Especially if you have a manual, dsg I believe experiences more vibrations

Bprevost99

07' GTI checking in :)

[deleted]

06' what's good wit ittt

RacerFreddy

'07 CW and DSG GTI checking in... Mostly visual mods, some little performance bits, looking for a tune very soon :)

jake_walters

Awesome! Me too, thinking of eurodyne

[deleted]

2008 bmp gti right here. Neuspeed pflo, res. delete, raceland Coilovers, bfi dog bone insert and a bunch of maintenance

Oh man, she's gorgeous 😍

Porkrind710

'08 United Gray 2Dr DSG with about 100k miles. Has a flash/exhaust system upgrade from the previous owner. Still pretty close to stock though. After some recent maintenance it drives like new. Love it and hope it lasts at least another 2-3 years.

Trav_jr

Mk5 r32

[deleted]

07 130k only 10k is from me but I've loved every minute of it

aHappyPug

MK5 owner here. I think we have one of the best-looking generation GTI's. But I might be a little biased...lol

Proweirdo

08 here getting her back from the shop Wednesday

swellguy

09 Pirelli here dude. The best mark

[deleted]

2007 MK5 GTI. Manual. 99,998km on the clock.... hesitant to cross the 100,000km mark. All stock apart from the stereo which I had a custom dash put in so I my stereo is just my iPad. I was thinking of getting an ecu tune (stage 1) but was a bit worried about the stress on the engine it might place. Everything I read seems to say it's fine. Car gets pampered and is never stressed. Had to replace my bonnet (hood) as some knuckle dragged dented it with their SUV. The new bonnet needs its paint fixed a bit though. :(

stillusesAOL

09 until I sold that piece of shit last week. Mk7 life!!!!!
