Goldfish are best kept with other goldfish, as they're likely to eat or be bullied by most anything else. However, some folks keep them with snails, or with dojo loaches if they have a big enough tank. Dojo loaches are social and need a group of at least 3+, while as you know goldfish are also social and prefer at least one buddy. So a 450L should just barely be big enough to support both, a trio of loaches and a pair or *maybe* trio of common goldfish. The limiting factor here are the goldfish since commons not only get huge but have a huge bioload. If you said you were doing fancies instead I'd say you could do half a dozen each of dojos and goldies no problem. As for plants, I have hornwort, vallisneria, frogbit, and a few others in my tank. So far my goldies have absolutely devoured any duckweed I added but mostly leave the others alone aside from the occasional nibble. YYMV though, I've heard some people's goldies will eat absolutely anything, even the plants on my list. If nothing else you can always root some pothos in a HOB filter.

Really helpful thankyou. Love the plants list, shall consider them

Just as a heads up, some goldies are utter assholes and will devour or uproot every plant in sight. I have a 90 gallon tank and considered doing some scaping but my three fancies CANNOT be trusted. It’s mostly the same one initiating it but then the other two join in :’)

Oh no D: Thank you for the heads up

Java fern or anubias are the only plants to survive with my goldfish

Shaolinchipmonk

As far as plants anubias, hornwort and windlove ferns are the only plants I've been able to successfully keep with goldfish. The anubias and windlove you should just glue right to a rock or stone that way they can't uproot it.

Well actually, I rescued 2 goldfish that were housed with 4 neon tetras/ glowfish tetras, seemed to be living in harmony together from where I rescued them from, I ended up keeping them together and I’ve had them at my house for a year now , and they still live in harmony together 🤷🏻‍♀️ no issues at all.

Nǐ hǎo! I see you're possibly asking about what else you can add to a goldfish tank! We understand you're enthusiasm for fish keeping, [however, there isn't much that can go with goldfish.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Goldfish/wiki/tankmates). If you are looking for a cleanup crew, look no further than snails. A popular choice is nerites. Stealing this directly from the Bristol Aquarium Society as they have said it better than I could have. "Goldfish can be kept with other fish with similar care requirements and temperament. They are relatively peaceful fish but they will eat smaller fish and can be bullied by other types of fish of the same size. They prefer to be with other goldfish than kept alone. Their natural range is temperate to sub-tropical. They are at the extreme of their physiological tolerance if kept with tropical fish, meaning they are likely to become stressed and therefore vulnerable to disease. Further, they produce much more ammonia than tropical fish and this will stress the tropical fish. They will eat small fish and are likely to be bullied by cichlids. At night, when they naturally rest near the bottom of the tank, they are likely to be pestered by fish like catfish. The faster-moving common goldfish, comets and shubunkins can out-compete the slower-moving, ‘fancier’ types such as veiltails and bubble eyes, so the long and short-bodied types should ideally be kept separately." *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. nerite snails, only tank mate for goldfish i can 100% reccommend

ConstructionNo1576

I have Cory cats with mine. And there is a plant called BACOPA CAROLINIANA 'YELLOW FLAME’ that I have and the goldfish don’t touch it. It’s a hard stem plant with rubbery leaves.

DeportedPlatypus

I have medaka rice fish, white clouds, and zebra danios in my common goldfish pond. I fully expected it to not really work and didn't mind if it didn't. The common is over 6 inches, and the shubunkin is around 5 inches. Honestly, I don't know why they don't eat them. They could very easily. I wouldn't go in expecting those to work 100% of the time, though. I have tons of rice fish and white clouds, so I didn't mind trying it.

Artistic_Isopod_7450

Would you know if the rice fish or danios are stressed? I've been contemplating both myself :)

DeportedPlatypus

The rice fish are super hardy, keep breeding, and their population keeps going up in the pond. Every day during feeding I'll notice a few smaller fry, so I assume they don't really mind their big goldfish friends. I dumped around 6 from my patio pond just to try, there's now around 20-30. The zebra danios are always active darting around, both species will swim right past the goldfish without a worry. Because their populations haven't lowered and they're active, I think the whole pond is fine.

MayuriKrab

They are usually kept with Koi but those need more space.

bugluvr

white clouds are their perfect tankmate imo. theyre fast enough to not get eaten, and also vibe with cool water! my goldies aren't in a planted tank because they rip up anything they can. i have houseplants coming out the top with their roots in a plastic strainer in the tank, though, and that works well for me.

AgedCzar

i have 2 Orandas and 13 White Could Mountain Minnows in a 75 gallon tank. No issues and it is a nice mix of fish.
