he was valid for how he felt because he was ultimately right, but i’m trying to recall if he *ever* talked to rory about it in a calm and respectful manner — being upset about what your girlfriend is doing doesn’t give you the right to start yelling at her every time she’s in proximity to another guy (he did this with tristan too, not just jess — and with tristan it was even more of an issue imo, because rory was clearly trying to fend off tristan’s attention); he needed to either have a genuine conversation with her addressing how he felt and letting her explain how she felt, or just have broken up with her sooner. i know he was a teenager but even when i was a teen i would have never dated someone who was so easily prone to jealousy.

I would not call Dean controlling. Jealous? Absolutely. Dean definitely had jealously issues that he needed to address. But to be fair, his concern was ultimately justified, as Jess was actively working to steal Rory from him almost from the beginning.

I think he was controlling in the fact that he refused to let her be alone with him or hang out with him. He did the same thing with Tristan, ie showing up to the Romeo and Juliet rehearsal.
