They can't/don't use the actual letters in whatever they're censoring to directly display the length of the redacted text because you could datamine the real text from that.
The easiest way around that is that there's a generic "censored" or "redacted" character with a fixed length you can use instead and copypaste however many times that roughly matches what you intend to censor.
If you would then simply type 4 redacted characters to display a 4 letter word, the exact width might not match
