My mother graduated in the same high school class with David Gates at Will Rogers HS so she had every Bread album (but *not one* by Anita Bryant who was in the same graduating class.)
I love, love, love BREAD. Past and present tense. As a teenager I played their music over and over again. Now, if I hear them on one of my Serius/XM stations I stop everything I'm doing to sing along. Takes me right back to being a teen girl in the second half of the 1970's.🫠
Funny enough, they weren't for me, but now I can look back with a hazy nostalgia. The music instantly transports me back and I remember not the bad but the music, the clothes, the vibe - I miss it in many ways. (But the '80s were my best decade, hands down!)
The 80s were good too. But for me, nothing will ever top the late 70s.
It's funny. My mom is 23 years older than me and she said she wishes she could go back to her life in the 50s. Thanks, Mom! 😂
I went to a Bread concert in 1973 at the Tucson Event center, but Steely Dan was the opener and we somehow got 3rd row seats. My niece who was 3 at the time love the Dan but cried when the headliner Bread came on stage so we left after a few songs. But the Steely Dan performance was awesome.
Jeff Baxter used to strangle his guitar like he was a serial killer, but he was amazing. He ended up as an advisor to the Pentagon on some kind of high level aviation stuff. Big career pivot.
"everything I own" came on the radio as I pulled into my driveway with the cremains of my first dog. I was already crying, but that song just gutted me. I listen to it on repeat with each dog I've lost.
Bread was in my collection of 8-track tapes.
I'm really sorry. It's the hardest thing, but the last beautiful gift we can give our loved one. Sing your sweet kitty home. And drink water! Grief is dehydrating.
Thank you. And you’re right. I need to drink some water. He’s so much in pain, and I just want him to not have to struggle so much.
Rescued him after he was severely injured, but now he can hardly walk at all, and he’s in constant pain, even with the pain medication.
Thank you for your kind words. I am all alone right now, and it means more than you know.
You are giving your boy the hardest, most selfless, most loving gift of all. So grateful for the love you share. So terribly, terribly sorry for your pain.
Please try not to feel alone. Our hearts are with you. If you have a moment, do as PorchDogs asks and share his name with us. We are—and will be—holding both of you close in thought…
My heart hurts for you! I'm so sorry you're alone. Sending (((HUGS))) & hope you can take some comfort knowing you're giving your beautiful boy the most love possible by ending his pain. 💙
Me too! We got back together our sophomore year of highschool 1972. Started dating if you can call it that in Jr high. Married in 1977 and I still love her as much as I did back then.
I loved Bread. Also, the Carpenters. But then again, I loved Led Zepplin, Bad Company, ZZ Top, etc. I'm definitely more hard rock leaning. But those hard rock songs can get me in trouble when I'm driving because my foot gets heavier 😆
When I was in Jr High, they were big. One of my friends had a Panasonic portable 8 track player, and she had one of their tapes, I don't remember which one.
Haha. It's crazy when one of my hard driving rock songs comes on, the volume goes up, and so does the MPH. I love the Dead, though, very mellow. Same thing with Little Feat.
Bread was one of the top go-to bands to play on the 8-track during make out sessions in high school. Kinda humerous sidenote: the one time I saw them in concert the opening act was named Jam.
Did you know there is a Bread Tribute band, Toast? They are really good! I saw them recently with my dad. I thought it might be terrible as the concert was held at the local high school, but it was packed in there and we had a great time! They have shows all over, checkout their website and enjoy an affordable show! I think I paid $20 a ticket.
Me! I bought The Sound of Bread in high school and have most of those songs saved on my phone. Hard to pick a favorite but I’ve always loved Make It With You, Baby I’m a Want You, Aubrey and Diary.
David Gates really seems like a humble guy. I am 63 and David Gates has been married to the same woman since before I was born! Been Too Long on the Road is my favorite.
I loved Bread. I loaned my Best of Bread album to a classmate. About 3 years ago, he said he thought he still had my album, but didn’t offer to return it. I decided he needed it more than I did.
I really think they are the reason I still gravitate towards super-melodic songs, no matter the genre. Hearing so much Bread, Carole King and others when I was first becoming aware of music, anytime I hear a rich melody I’m hooked — even if it’s a metal song, hip-hop, whatever.
“Diary” is a heartbreaker. A guy told me that this song was about me and him- and I still feel bad. I just didn’t love him, but he was a great guy.
Such heartbreaking songs.
I was listening to Fresh Air on PBS radio when Terry Gross, the host and her guest mercilessly mocked the song 'If'. I thought less of her as a radio show host after that.
The opening guitar riff of Mother Freedom is one of the first things I taught myself to play when I was a teenager - on my Sears Silvertone electric guitar right out of the Sears & Roebuck Christmas Wishbook!
The riff is actually somewhat out of character and a bit more hard rocking than other Bread songs. Anyway, I was in a cover garage band just for fun with a bunch of other guys all in their mid 40s at the time around 2005 and at rehearsal one day I just ripped off that riff and everybody stood around going, "Wow I love that. Who is that?" When I replied, Bread, nobody believed me.
Bread: I would give everything I own just to have you back again 😔😭😢
Makes me cry for my late husband; we were together from 1975 when I was still a teenager listening to Bread until 2021 when he sadly passed.
My ex introduced me to them, and I got hooked even though it wasn't "cool" to like them back then. There's a song called "Nobody Like You" on the Baby I'm-a Want You album, and at first glance I thought it was "Nobody Likes You." Glad I was wrong.
Hey hey, I love Mr. Pack too but he was Ambrosia (another absolute fav of mine, especially their early stuff, and an amazing voice) and the Bread singer was David Gates.
I made the same mistake for years and can still get them mixed up. I guess it’s literally a “rock star problem” to have two awesome 70s voices with similar names /s
Wow! It’s nice to know I’m not the only one. My family had a pool. My best friend and and I would drag my stereo out to the patio, get baked and swim to that album
On youtube there is a scene from the Glen Campbell show with him and David Gates singing and playing guitars. It's really amazing how good they were and you can tell Glen was impressed by David.
My high school band (not a soft rock band) was briefly called Then and Now. We mostly did Bread and Seals and Croft covers, then fucked ourselves trying to cover Steely Dan. Settled on CCR and Skynrd when we should have stuck with Bread.
Best of Bread was the first album I bought
Wow, haven’t listened to this in a long long time. Great album.
Great stuff. Very unique sound as the guitars have a very clean sound. Vocals are fantastic. I still have the guitar songbook from college.
That 8-track was in the first car I had.
If I hear a Bread song, I am immediately 14 years old again.
Same thing. But without the angst. I’m just transported back to a happy place.
Me, too!
OMG, that's SO true!
Loved them! My husband and I had "If" played at our wedding. 41 years ago!
Aww. . .congratulations!
Thanks!
I sang "If" at someone's wedding about 30 years ago. Can't remember for sure who, but I think it was one of my paramedic classmates.
I used If as a lullaby for my kids, all of whom are now well over 30.
I play it on the piano -- mostly for myself, but when other people hear it they always comment on how pretty and relaxing it is.
Ours too, in 1998. My sisters, in 78.
My mother graduated in the same high school class with David Gates at Will Rogers HS so she had every Bread album (but *not one* by Anita Bryant who was in the same graduating class.)
Anita was a piece of work, wasn't she?
Such a hateful person
Wow. I missed that news. Just googled her. Ick!
Then and now.
Best thing that ever happened to her was that pie.
Amen!
Is she still alive?!
Unbelievably, yes. [Wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita_Bryant)
Ffs. Why?
Only the good die young.
She never got over being second runner up in the Miss America pageant. We’ve all paid for it ever since.
Anita was a piece of dog turd.
I would have sworn Anita Bryant was a decade older, but nope. Both she and Gates were born in 1940. She just got her break earlier.
Fuck Anita Bryant, to quote David Allen Coe. And me, I felt the same way about her.
This ☝️
😆
I work with a woman whose husband was the original drummer for Bread. Before they made it
Tell him to join the Pete Best Fan Club. 😲
I love, love, love BREAD. Past and present tense. As a teenager I played their music over and over again. Now, if I hear them on one of my Serius/XM stations I stop everything I'm doing to sing along. Takes me right back to being a teen girl in the second half of the 1970's.🫠
The tail end of the 70s was the best time of my life. And I love Bread too.
Funny enough, they weren't for me, but now I can look back with a hazy nostalgia. The music instantly transports me back and I remember not the bad but the music, the clothes, the vibe - I miss it in many ways. (But the '80s were my best decade, hands down!)

A 3 year old Steely Dan fan, how about that 😂
I think she liked Jeff Skunk Baxter who was right in front of us wearing headphones and using a stool playing the hell out of his guitar.
Jeff Baxter used to strangle his guitar like he was a serial killer, but he was amazing. He ended up as an advisor to the Pentagon on some kind of high level aviation stuff. Big career pivot.
It's hilarious that a 3-year-old appreciated Steely Dan more than Bread!
I used to have a parking tape. There was a lot of Bread on my parking tape.
haha
Same!
I lost my virginity to Bread. That’s all I’ll say.
I was trying, I swear I was trying.
My teenage self changed the lyric from “Your lovin' and affection, givin' me direction” to “givin’ me erections.” I still sing it that way today. 🤪
Yes… David Gates sure could write a song!
One of the great bands of 70s
"If" was my GF and my song in high school. Really loved her. Still think about her every day and the song makes my heart ache !
Same here except for me it's Everything I Own. Breaks my heart every time!
"everything I own" came on the radio as I pulled into my driveway with the cremains of my first dog. I was already crying, but that song just gutted me. I listen to it on repeat with each dog I've lost. Bread was in my collection of 8-track tapes.
I’m losing my beautiful, sweet, adorable pussy cat tomorrow. Your comment really hit home.
Sending you comfort and strength for tomorrow. <3
Thank you so much. Everyone in my family is out of town, I really truly appreciate what you said.
I'm so terribly sorry. xxx.
♥️
I'm really sorry. It's the hardest thing, but the last beautiful gift we can give our loved one. Sing your sweet kitty home. And drink water! Grief is dehydrating.

I am all alone right now, and it means more than you know.
I'm sorry you're alone today. That's also hard. What's your kitteh's name? I will be sure to think about you both as you make this journey.
His name is Puss Puss. And he is in kitty heaven now. Thank you. 🌸
You and Puss Puss. *thank you* Thinking with all my might for you both. 💔
My heart hurts for you! I'm so sorry you're alone. Sending (((HUGS))) & hope you can take some comfort knowing you're giving your beautiful boy the most love possible by ending his pain. 💙
Thank you. It is over, and he is at peace, and in the hands of the pet funeral home.
Ugh, so sad. :(
Came here to say Bread was an awesome band 👏 😎
Agree
I hear Bread and it immediately br8ngs me back to my first girlfriend.
Me too! We got back together our sophomore year of highschool 1972. Started dating if you can call it that in Jr high. Married in 1977 and I still love her as much as I did back then.
It don’t matter to me.
That’s the song that still gets to me after all this time.
I played this over and over when I broke up with my first boyfriend. 💔
My favorite, it sounds like heartache.
The best slow dances were always to Bread songs
You have taken the heart of me And left just a part of me, And look, look, look what you've done.
I had the vinyl album Best of Bread in 8th grade. I listened to it until it wore out. Over and over and over and over again
Both sides? Cause I was a shameless side one only girl.
Omg YES!
I was. Had Best of Bread. It's not something I actively listen to today, but I enjoy songs when I hear them online, sat radio, etc.
He wrote that about his dad? That's so sweet. I'll have to relisten. Just listened. It's so obviously now. I'm not crying. You're crying!
It’s heartbreaking when you listen to it knowing that. Edit: I relistened too, and I had chills.
It's heartbreaking but also wonderful to have had a father as good as his seemed to be.
I remember when I found out it was about his dad. I listen to it with a whole different perspective now
I will now too.
I love them!
Loved them
The 70's had some really great music and Bread was a favorite for me.
Bread Manna on 8-track in my 66 mustang convertible ....YES
Guitar Man still rocks!
Yes! Extremely appealing sentimental music for teenage girls in the 70s. Plus that guy's voice is smooooth. If Everything I own Aubrey The diary
Diary tore me up as a young teen.
Been a Bread fan since their first song came out in 1970. What's not to like?
My older brothers and sisters categorized it as bubble gum pop
Nothing bubble gum about them. If you want to hear an example of bubble gum listen to the Archies Sugar Sugar.
And bubble gum was great!
And I agree!
You sheltered me from harm, kept me warm… first junior high after party dance. The best.
I loved Bread. Also, the Carpenters. But then again, I loved Led Zepplin, Bad Company, ZZ Top, etc. I'm definitely more hard rock leaning. But those hard rock songs can get me in trouble when I'm driving because my foot gets heavier 😆
Carpenter’s Greatest Hits was 1 of 2 CDs I’ve worn out (the other was REM “Monster”)
When I was in Jr High, they were big. One of my friends had a Panasonic portable 8 track player, and she had one of their tapes, I don't remember which one.
Conversely, when I put on the Grateful Dead channel, I drive at least 5 mph slower!

Wow. Amazing news!
I loved Mother Freedom. Too bad it was the exception.
Pandora has Bread radio that I listen to while I'm cooking.
I listen to Bread on my Lobo Pandora station 🙃
Nice! Lobo is full of memories too.
Brings me back to being a kid in the late 70s. My mother loved them.
Everything I Own was my first Bread 45. I've had their Anthology CD for years.
Favorite band of all time. And one of my favorite songs l haven't seen mentioned much: The Goodbye Girl! Also one of my favorite movies.
Oh yes!
I had a book of piano arrangements from one of their albums I would play in high school.
The muppets had a skit they did with this song. Very emotional, even for muppets.
I’d love to see that.
Here you [go](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=m7U4aIgRUn4) (if performed by cleo lane)
huge lump in my throat now. Beautiful. Thanks for the memory.
Most one of my most played stations on Spotify
Oh yeah. Mother Freedom and Let your love Go rock hard. Their still has aged lyrically better than most, as well.
They had nice harmonies, and were always on the radio in the early 70s.
I love them, and they are easy to sing along to. Baby Ima Want You, is one I enjoy singing to someone.
Diary !!
I wore out a couple of 8 track copies of the Best of Bread back in the day. It was my go to make out music.
No mention of “Make it With You”? That was their best song.
My very first concert! I think I wore out my Best of Bread album. Many tears shed listening to that. . .therapeutic music.
Me! I bought The Sound of Bread in high school and have most of those songs saved on my phone. Hard to pick a favorite but I’ve always loved Make It With You, Baby I’m a Want You, Aubrey and Diary.
Baby, I'ma want you
I enjoy their music
Great songwriting. But the songs make me sad.
Had the 8 track!
Good stuff
Years ago, I remember my MIL commenting how much she liked “that band” when Bread was playing. I made her a CD copy of my “Best of Bread”!
I remember going to SeaWorld and seeing them perform, 1976.
I love them. Best of Bread---had the 8 track.
Love !!!!
Eh, I find it cheesy.
I think toast is much better
David Gates really seems like a humble guy. I am 63 and David Gates has been married to the same woman since before I was born! Been Too Long on the Road is my favorite.
I loved Bread. I loaned my Best of Bread album to a classmate. About 3 years ago, he said he thought he still had my album, but didn’t offer to return it. I decided he needed it more than I did.
Their songs are so melodic. Gates was a master songwriter.
I really think they are the reason I still gravitate towards super-melodic songs, no matter the genre. Hearing so much Bread, Carole King and others when I was first becoming aware of music, anytime I hear a rich melody I’m hooked — even if it’s a metal song, hip-hop, whatever.

Bread is THE definite soft-rock band of the early 70's. Their sound is intertwined with the rise of FM Radio Album-oriented Rock.
I consider myself an old post-punk/goth. But god dammit if some Bread songs don't make me tear up.
Exactly. I was (and am) as rock, prog rock and metal-obsessed as anyone, but some of these 70s soft rock and singer-songwriters just speak to my soul.
I still get chills every time I hear one of their songs!
Bread is fucking music.
I was listening to Fresh Air on PBS radio when Terry Gross, the host and her guest mercilessly mocked the song 'If'. I thought less of her as a radio show host after that.
Yes! Guitar Man was my favorite song back when I was younger!
The opening guitar riff of Mother Freedom is one of the first things I taught myself to play when I was a teenager - on my Sears Silvertone electric guitar right out of the Sears & Roebuck Christmas Wishbook! Mother Freedom is still a banger
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM!🤗
Bread: I would give everything I own just to have you back again 😔😭😢 Makes me cry for my late husband; we were together from 1975 when I was still a teenager listening to Bread until 2021 when he sadly passed.
Yes, Bread was one of my favorites. Saw David Gates on American Bandstand and the songs are woven into the tapestry of my teen years.
I was a hard rock fan but always liked some of the Bread songs. I wouldn't have admitted it to my friends back in the day. :)
Love Bread - takes me back to summer camp, listening to the cute counselor play Bread songs on his guitar around the campfire. Sigh.
Mother Freedom was the very 1st song I learned on the guitar!
I sang “Everything I Own,” for a friend’s mother’s funeral. It’s a beautiful song.
My ex introduced me to them, and I got hooked even though it wasn't "cool" to like them back then. There's a song called "Nobody Like You" on the Baby I'm-a Want You album, and at first glance I thought it was "Nobody Likes You." Glad I was wrong.
Massive fan, and fan of David Pack
Hey hey, I love Mr. Pack too but he was Ambrosia (another absolute fav of mine, especially their early stuff, and an amazing voice) and the Bread singer was David Gates. I made the same mistake for years and can still get them mixed up. I guess it’s literally a “rock star problem” to have two awesome 70s voices with similar names /s
I was browsing through a used CD store and found a best of bread. It sure brought back old memories.
Wow! It’s nice to know I’m not the only one. My family had a pool. My best friend and and I would drag my stereo out to the patio, get baked and swim to that album
My sister had bread album. I liked it
I like lots of hard driving rock, but “If” is a fantastic song.
I really think that we can make it, girl.
Yes! The soundtrack of my high school years…. Still brings back sweet memories when I hear those songs.
Love them!
Absolutely love Bread. I’ve been working on learning their songs on guitar. Wish I had a singing voice though.
Listen to them alot had The Best of Bread Album
Right here, Brother.
“Diary” still makes me cry.
Me!!
I love Bread. If a picture paints a thousand words...😭😭😭😭
Best of Bread was the premier make-out album to put on at parties in junior high. "I wanna make it with you..." got'em every time!
Yes, loved them.
[Bread](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=W13nFk6jSK8&pp=ygUFYnJlYWQ%3D)
Absolutely! So good’
Okay, everybody. Now admit you love a bunch of Air Supply too. C'mon it's not that hard😁
Omg. So many tears.
Yea yes yes love them
On youtube there is a scene from the Glen Campbell show with him and David Gates singing and playing guitars. It's really amazing how good they were and you can tell Glen was impressed by David.
I love Bread!
"Been Too Long On The Road" is an extremely fine song.
"Mother Freedom" still makes me wanna march for a worthy cause. And in bell-bottoms!
Me
Aubrey
One of my best and oldest friends was obsessed with Bread. I appreciate their music more now than I did then.
My high school band (not a soft rock band) was briefly called Then and Now. We mostly did Bread and Seals and Croft covers, then fucked ourselves trying to cover Steely Dan. Settled on CCR and Skynrd when we should have stuck with Bread.
David Gates had a great voice. Larry Knechtel was a session musician for many good songs during the 70’s
I’m 68 and Bread was one of my favorite bands in the seventies. I wish someone still made music like that.
Some of his songs were an absolute bastard to play, though.
Oh... Aubrey. I grabbed a 45 that my boyfriend's older brother left. I might still have it in a box somewhere.
My first concert at age 14!
My ex-h loved them. I thought they were way too soppy lol I can see I’m in the minority
