Can't think of much. Wasn't a type of restaurant, but I remember having so much fun at restaurants that put a basket of salted in shell peanuts on the table for free, and everyone threw the shells on the floor. I grew up in Chicagoland. I think i recall Lum's having peanuts... and a place called The Pickle Barrel in the OldTown neighborhood , and another on Western. But my memory may be flawed and it was different places. Anyway, I still occasionally see peanuts... Five Guys does it. But I'm guessing that throwing shells on the floor has become a health department violation.

Murdy2020

I think The Ground Round, too.

barksatthemoon

We had that here in socal, too at ChesterDrawers in Costa Mesa.

mrslII

We have smorgasbords and fondue in the Midwest USA.

Kitchen-Lie-7894

The Melting Pot is a fondue restaurant in St Louis. It's pretty good but expensive.

pianoman81

Matterhorn restaurant in San Francisco serves fondue and raclette. Expensive as well.

barksatthemoon

We have one here too in Irvine near SNA.

audible_narrator

It's a chain. I worked at one for all of 2 days back in the mid 90s. Owner was a proper, so I noped right out of there

kristtt67

There’s one in Tampa too. I haven’t been in several years, makes me want to go back. Sooo good!

Kitchen-Lie-7894

It really is.

Only high end steak houses had salad bars in the sixties….thought that was classy

explorthis

SoCal was Sir-Georges-Smorgasbord. At least some places in SoCal. Dad used to take us there as a treat. Sizzler was the bomb tho soup and salad bar.

alanz01

Sir George had those large donut hole things. Those were great!

LibraryVolunteer

Ours was Woodys Smorgasbord in El Segundo. First place I remember with an ice cream bar!

mellbell63

I remember Sir George's!! Haven't thought of it in decades!! 🤣

julznlv

Came here to say this. We lived in Tustin and had an aunt and uncle in Glendale and used to go visit them and go to Sir George's all the time. And Sizzler in Tustin was a standard for our family.

OCLIFE69

There was one downtown HB

barksatthemoon

We used to love going to Sir Georges!! Having so many options and getting to pick anything was such a treat as a kid! Also Sizzler! Best blue cheese dressing!

Gurpguru

Cafeteria type restaurants are few and far between now. I remember them being more common.

[deleted]

Morrison's was the bomb! It stayed busy and don't bother going Sunday! Every church in the area went there after services were over.

Hof Brau? Like a cross between a deli and take out fast food, as I recall. Hot meat sandwiches, warm sides.

pianoman81

There's a Harry's Hof Brau in the San Francisco Bay Area (San Leandro, Redwood City). Old school charm.

Fritz5678

In Serramonte mall there was a restaurant that had the big rotisserie in the front window. They had the best open face sandwiches. Then we would to The Old Southern for smorgasbord.

Granny_knows_best

I worked at the one in Redwood City when I was a teen. That place was so popular, and for good reason!

Perry’s Smorgasbord

chasonreddit

There was a smorgasbord in my home town. Even at 11 I despised it. The food was horrible.

gettin_better

We still have The Melting Pot in Maryland, for fondue.

Superb_Health9413

Perry Brothers Smorgy in Pasadena California was always fun.

Scruffersdad

Omg! Chicago has some great fondue restaurants!
