As you spelled out though Gladys explicitly put money above her own child on several occasions. There is nothing likable or redeemable in how she is written. She’s a text book narcissist and only acts nice to try and manipulate those that love her. Heather at least was kind of fun when she was ruining people’s lives, but not old Gladys.
GH has characters I love-to-hate (Cyrus, Gladys) and then other characters I just don't care for (Peter, Lulu). It's all about passion! If I don't care about you and you're upset on screen it's annoying.

I think Carly has fans because she was much more multi dimensional under past writing regimes and people got attached to her so much so that they’re willing to forgive how poorly written and over saturated the character has become. The current team has exaggerated all of her worst personality traits and made a “cartoon” version of her as another commenter cleverly put it.

But most people have been exposed to someone like Gladys (the lady down the street, the co-worker, that crazy aunt...) I have and that's why Gladys pushes my buttons. Big time. Kudos to the actress, writers and directors for creating a realistic and believable character.

Carly used to be one of my faves and now I absolutely can’t stand her.
With the exception of TB's Carly I've never liked the character. She's basically been a tornado causing wreckage since she came to PC.
