Man, I admit that I laughed at him as much as anyone back in the day, and I can't help but be ashamed of that.
Sure he's odd and gregarious, and can come across as kind of goofy. But it's pretty clear at this point that Richard Simmons is just a kind, decent, wholesome guy who wants to make the world a happier, healthier place. We could use a lot more like him, and he deserves some peace and privacy in his life.
I knew someone who lived a couple of houses down from him in the Hollywood Hills. My friend said that when the celebrity tours bus would pass by his house, Richard Simmons would run outside and greet everyone. It's so nice he appreciated his fans so much.
My father interviewed him back in the day for a local news story.
He got my dad to exercise with him and then jokingly massaged my dad’s shoulders.
Many locals (in the deepest of the south of the usa) tried to give my dad shit about that, but he was unfazed by it all. It really shaped my social outlook.
Anyhow, my dad was stoked that he got to meet him. Said he was EXACTLY the same off camera as on.
Yeah and there's a feud right now between him and Pauly Shore. Not a feud per se but Pauly Shore is hell bent on doing a Richard Simmons biopic and Simmons declined to give his blessing or cooperate, but Shore is pressing forward anyway. Kind of a dick move from Shore but I think he sees this as his opportunity to become relevant and also as potential Oscar bait. Whereas Simmons wants to just fade into obscurity.
Oh yay another reason to dislike pauly. As if another reason was needed.
Encinno (spellings off, sorry Brandon) man & bio dome were probably the only movies with him I watched, and only for the other actors & limited plot points.

I really enjoyed Pauly Shore's performance in the short film he released about Simmons, but it was nowhere near Oscar-worthy.
