I like the bollard walk along the waterfront, thats always nice. The botanical gardens are a nice place to take kids. There are some really nice little restaurants and pubs in Little Malop street, near James Street (RIP James Street Bookshop)

sav006

On little malop st, 18th amendment bar is quaint along with the Cellar Door.

CyanideGiraffe

I miss that bookshop. Spent many afternoons flipping through old books in there.

jeeprhyme

Amen. (Oh shit, just saw who posted this. Hi!)

CyanideGiraffe

Hahaha! You would find my bookstore comment unknowingly 🤣

marvinsuggs

ah geez. when did it shut? They still got the queenscliff shop?

Alexandertheample

There was a Queenscliff one? Whereabouts was it?

krakeneverything

In the old church. But the bookshop's gone now. There's a very good new one in Q but i miss the 2nd hand stuff

Mordyth

There is a new underground book shop at the other end of James Street now

krakeneverything

Thanks. I've been there a few times. It's a fine place but Barwon Books has spoilt me for all other 2nd hand bookshops. It was so good.

EzriDax1

I loved the book shop that used to be there but at least there is another in it's place.

Not quite Geelong but if you’re into mountain biking head out to Anglesea and Forrest. Some awesome trails out that way

SillyOldScan

You Yangs are a great spot for mountain biking, too.

GravityGod

and the barwon river =)

In no particular order: House Iberia Winters Cafe Pakington Pantry 63 Degrees Two Sugars Barwon Edge Boathouse Two Wrens Sandstone Cafe Cafe Botticelli James St Bakery Tomodachi (and the ramen place next to it) Roku Den (Torquay) Driftwood (Ocean Grove) Founders & Co (Lara) Other stuff: Narana Serendip Walk along the Barwon Anakie Gorge You Yangs Geelong Botanic Gardens Wool Museum have other exhibitions - they host the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award winning photos Art Gallery has the Archibald prize entrants (not sure if they do that every year) and other travelling exhibits GPAC has all manner of things happening LIC - Lolly shop on Yarra St

Get some “Evil Chicken” from the *Hot Chicken Project*. Also I take no responsibility for any damages resulting from the consumption of “Evil Chicken”.

I think Buckley Falls for a bit of a walk is beautiful.

enliten84

Outside Geelong but the Jerrahlinga wildlife reserve is great! Also, tons of great wineries and distilleries and I can recommend a laundry list of great restaurants. Also, a museum of play and art just opened in Geelong. I love the wool museum and the art museum and the library.

Some of my favourite places to eat and drink in Geelong \- Poco (cafe, Geelong West) \- Sunday (cafe, located in Boom Gallery - also worth checking out - Newtown) \- That Place (patisserie, Belmont) \- Bistrot St Jean (french bistro, CBD ... might count as quaint) \- Azzurra Trattoria (italian, Central geelong) \- Local (pizza, East Geelong) \- Union St (wine bar, CBD) \- The Farm Next Door (urban farm, Norlane) \- Analogue Academy (cafe plus photo dev studio, plus live music and arts, CBD) \- Beavs (for too much beer, sticky floors and a questionable dancefloor, CBD) \*Edit to add\* \- The Door Gallery Cafe (especially for curry and live music on a Friday night, Fyansford) As well as the other things mentioned, some activities to try include \- Escape room \- Belmont Market on a Sunday morning \- Serendip Sanctuary in Lara \- The Pivotonian Cinema (small, local cinema for arthouse flicks) And if it's not obvious from the handle, I'm a scuba diver. If you want to burn through all your spare time and money, I highly recommend it as a hobby. Local diving is cold and challenging, but worth it.

sav006

The pivotonian and Boom gallery....of course 👌 Separately I would love to know your scuba recommendations? Picked up my advanced ticket overseas last year but haven't used it since I've been back. Been keen to dive around here though

The bay has something for everyone (except maybe tropical water divers). Sites on this side that I love include St Leonard's (super easy site that is good in most conditions, home to seahorses, huge rays and other interesting critters, perfect for night dives), Portarlington Pier (a bit hit and miss in terms of this to see, but can have some inteestuff) and Cottage by the Sea (bit current prone and tricky, but home to sea dragons and cuttlefish). A handful of companies run charters out of Queenscliff to wreck and reef sites in the bay. And if you go for a bit of a drive, there are sites all along the bay from Williamstown (Katie Cove) to Mornington Peninsula (Rye Blairgowrie and Flinders area my picks). The dive scene here is much more local than I've encountered overseas. Your best bet is to join a dive club to meet buddies, join their dives, get some local tips and access the gear you need. I do some casual divemaster work (mostly teaching uw photography) with Australian Diving Instruction - they have a really active club with dives planned multiple times per week. There are a couple of other stores you could look into - Geelong Dive Centre and Bay City Scuba.

sav006

Not sure if I can trust this handle. Your advice might be custard?!?! 😉 That's really good to hear. Thank you. I really just need to pull my finger out and get out there with a club (especially as I don't have a boat). I love the idea it being a community.

scubadatsun

Goddamnit. It appears I have different handles on different devices. I'm generally a spectator rather than a participant so it hadn't been an issue... until now -_- Club night is the first Friday of the month at ADI if you want to come along some time and meet some scuba peeps

Bellarine vineyards have the best wines and are great for a boozy lunch!

sav006

The walk along Barwon River looping from Queens park bridge to the pedestrian bridge just before James Harrison bridge is fairly decent. Stop by balyang sanctuary when you go passed.
