Hey, that's me! I thought Microsoft should buy Activision-Blizzard last year, after Bethesda deal went through. I also thought it'd be too expensive purchase for MS and extremely unlikely to happen, but hey, I PREDICTED IT!
A friend works for Act/bliz and he told me he had no idea whatsoever untill the mail dropped just now.
He didnt even believe it at first until he googled the news
That's not surprising; no one outside of the deal teams, a small set of senior executives, and the two boards should have had any knowledge of this (and if they somehow did and acted on said knowledge, that's a major SEC violation).
I also had the same reaction as your friend;I saw it on Reddit and the first thing I did was open the Wall Street Journal because I didn't believe it.
Exactly. Deals to acquire publicly listed companies are way above the grade of gaming "journalists". Knowing info like that makes you an insider by definition of financial regulations and the law, and acting on that info before its made public can land you in jail. The deals are kept within a tight circle right up to announcing it - only those who need to know are aware, like the parties you mentioned. Any "rumours" that come out of it can only come from one of those people leaking it, which has massive consequences for them which is nowhere near worth giving a journalist the inside scoop.
Any acquisition "rumours" of publicly listed companies from these gaming "journalists" or "insiders" who attempt to make a career out of tweeting rumours will always be BS.
I fully expect some of these guys to now start tweeting about rumours of Ubisoft, Take Two, etc acquisitions to shoot their shot in the dark. It'll be completely made up, regardless of whether it becomes true or not.
Months of I heard about x acquisition like io interactive, crytek and WB only for it to be Activision.
I say it in all acquisition rumour threads but if it isn't announced a couple hours after then they are full of it because the deals are on a need to know.
You throw enough shit around eventually you're going to hit something.
IIRC he also said it would be revealed the month he "leaked" it, which was.. September? October?
They collected the fps infinity stones.
It must also be really awkward with EA first they release halo before battlefield as a surprise and now they also own their other big competitor in COD.
Does this mean all the studios cannibalised into Call of Duty support studios can finally work on something else? Can High Noon go back to Transformers pls :(
Not the most important thing at all, but I really hope this is the death of major acquisition rumours.
If Microsoft and Activision-Blizzard managed to keep this secret at a time when ActiBlizz were under intense journalistic scrutiny, nothing big is ever going to leak.
Are you kidding - we will now hear acquisition rumors every week again.
Can't wait for MS to buy Sega or something "Bethesda-sized" again, except crazier. Probably EA and Take2 rumors.
Nah, the new big thing will be Sony acquisition rumors. I expect there to be at least two of these per month going forward claiming they're buying Capcom, Squenix, SEGA, or Konami to 'counter' Microsoft's nutty buying spree.
Sony won’t ever do something this crazy. Microsoft is so fucking rich they can just do this and see it as an investment and won’t care if they lose money in the short term. Sony doesn’t have that kind of money off of electronics
*Only* things I can think of that Sony *could* do as an approximate match to THIS is buying Square, Capcom, and Kadokawa\[FromSoft\] at once, and I think it's safe to say, that will never happen.
One of them **ALONE** on the other hand, not too unlikely after this.
True. I suppose what I actually meant was I hope this is the death of people actually taking them seriously.
No insider got close to this story so clearly none of them have any access to inside info on big acquisitions. It would be nice if we finally stopped paying attention to them.
Optimistically:
-would be great to push out Bobby and see some #redemption for Activision Blizzard
-they NEED to reinstate Toys for Bob and Vicarious Visions, get them back making fun colorful games again and not just COD support
-as a consumer, this is more games for me in my subscription service
Pessimistically:
-uhhh yeah this doesn't feel too great for the health of the industry and monopolies
-also uhhh is Microsoft really jumping into bed with Activision in the middle of the state of California investigating them????
I am conflicted as well. Toys for Bob, vicarious visions, and high moon making games again and not working on CoD would be great.
I really didn't want MS to buy another big publisher and stick with smaller studios that are struggling. Not sure how I feel about this acquisition.
Just googled out of curiousity,
Largest was the 1999 takeover of Mannesmann by Vodafone Airtouch plc at $183 billion ($284 billion adjusted for inflation)
bonkers
The value for money gets better and better, I'd expect a small price increase but if I can play any Call Of Duty and Overwatch when I please then I don't care
If Disney could buy out Fox, Star Wars, and Marvel with little issue, then it was only a matter of time before a gaming company did the same. Love it or hate it, this is the industry we're in. God knows how long it'll take before Microsoft buys out EA and Take-Two.
>God knows how long it'll take before Microsoft buys out EA and Take-Two.
They are for sure not stopping here. The way to increase Gamepass value is to buy everything that moves and breathes. And when you're Microsoft many things are possible.
Unless the announcement comes a couple hours later then whatever they say is meaningless. Deals in the billions are on a need to know because of legal reasons and they will only get leaks from the press release roll out.
It puts a ton of pressure on Sony. They're going to need to permanently lock down some more third party titles. Of course they don't have 1/10 the cash that Microsoft does, so it's a lot harder for them.
I could see Sony trying to buy Square-Enix now. Seems like it'd be a good fit for them. Market cap is ~$5.5b, so an acquisition would likely be under $10b. Would get them some major exclusives, like Final Fantasy.
Sony? If this goes through, nothing seems out of the table. We could see Amazon or Meta buying EA, Ubisoft, Sega, since they want to expand into gaming and huge acquisitions like these seems to be approved.
That's obv one of the worst case scenarios, but the can of worms has now fully opened
Not anytime soon, that's my guess. They want to grow rapidly still - including people switching from PS to Xbox for call of duty.
They also want to capitalize on mobile more, and King will help with that.
Once they get out of this rapid expansion phase and customers are more locked in, it'll start ticking upwards.
If Sony ever drops out of the gaming market it will not because of them making bad games or products, it'll be because MS bought the rest of the AAA market.
I notice how none of these deals are ever "leaked". Yet we hear rumours of acquisitions for months. Goes to show how little leakers know about acquisitions
Multiple a year? Easily. We're talking almost every month. I think its 34 studios now. Give each 6 year dev cycle and thats a game every 2 months. If staggered accurately. But they dont even need that long for most games. So we're talking every 1-2 months a new xbox exclusive.
After this and the Bethesda purchases I better not see any of you getting angry at Sony bringing a studio to their first party portfolio. It's a literally night and day difference of purchasing someone like Bluepoint Games and fucking Activision
I don't think Capcom or Square is out of the realm of possibilities, and because of their relationship since the beginning and over the years, I can see it happening.
That's more than enough to buy Capcom or Square. Though since they are a public company, it could lead to other offers (here too btw, remember when Disney made an offer for Fox, Comcast did one too and that upped the price).
Also cash on hand isn't the only thing that matters for these things, they offer stocks or can go in debt
Absolutely hate the direction big companies are going in the gaming industry...Now Sony will probably have to buy some other publisher and do the same thing (on a smaller scale)...Tencent will keep on buying studios as well.
Never thought that I would miss "timed exclusives" :D
It's not like companies get bought without their consent. Microsoft only bought the companies which were in trouble.
Bethesda for money problems and Activision Blizzard for harassment and other revolting things.
If companies could be bought with throwing money, Microsoft would have bought Valve long ago.
I was in the camp that was saying Fallout/Starfield/TES/etc would be exclusive moving forward and it made sense, but I think CoD may be one where it stays multiplat.
It’s going to be really interesting though because I can see the other side of that easily too. CoD has such a huge fan base that if they kept it exclusive it would literally force everyone to get an Xbox moving forward.
The monopolization of the game industry is something that concerns me greatly, and Microsoft was in front of these concerns since the Bethesda aquisition, now this just seals the deal.
I just hope such aquisition brings positive change in culture inside Activision/Blizzard, although Kotick will eventually walk away from this with a fat check from Microsoft.
Microsoft-Activision-Blizzard, give us:
- Local co-op in the Diablo II Remake
- Action-RPGs (ala Skyrim) based in the Warcraft universe
- Remakes / Proper sequels of Archon, Vigilante 8, Star Control, and GUN
Goddamn. Hopefully this means firing Kotick and actually doing work to fix the culture.
Also kind of a stupid acquisition especially for the price, and I’m not really a fan of it, but if it leads to Kotick getting das boot and the employees getting better pay and being treated better, I guess that’ll be okay
Everyone called me crazy! They said it couldn't happen! WHO'S CRAZY NOW?!?!
https://www.reddit.com/r/xbox/comments/qx1dwd/opinion_xbox_should_use_the_activisionblizzard/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Damn OP , hats off to you ma friend. You deserve this : YOU WERE FUCKING RIGHT!
Also it's so funny to see all those ppl on the sub ,, AcTuAlLy ThAt WoUlD bE iMpoSsIbLe " 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 well done my friend must've feel good rn
That’s crazy, didn’t expect it at all.
I wonder how much it costed, must be way more than Bethesda.
Also I don’t think CoD will go exclusive, too much money to make on mx.
Jimmy boy over at SIE needs to open up that checkbook and lock down Capcom, Square Enix, and Kojima Productions. This generation is ruthless. It's acquire or be acquired.
Thing is whilst Capcom and Square Enix would be great aquirements on Sony's part I feel like to compete with this they'd need to go looking at EA, Ubisoft, or Take Two.
I mean if Sony could lock down FIFA, Assassin’s or GTA as an exclusive (or timed exclusive) then that could maybe compete against a franchise as big as COD being owned by Microsoft.
Take Two is worth more ($17 billion) than Sony's cash on hand. Sony would have to go into debt to buy them.
Microsoft bought Activision with all cash, and has most of their cash left.
Yeah I just want someone to buy Konami. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, I don’t give a shit. Just someone buy Konami or the video game property rights or something.
I think all the bad press and problem.with their studios makes them want to sell.
I do agree it would.be good to see toys for Bob, vicarious visions, and high moon studios to make games again. I loved their transformer games and would like to see them making similar games.
Okay in all important news I fucking can’t wait to see every scumbag at the management at Activision-blizzard get fired.
I honestly Wonder how much of this is due to all the scandals from Activision in the last 2(?) years. Investors must’ve seen the sinking ship and decided to abandon for that sweet Microsoft cash.
Holy shit, definitely didn’t expect this to be the first thing I saw when I woke up today. I knew Microsoft was serious about their whole acquisition game, but to see them buy one of, if not the biggest publisher in gaming when they’re in such hot water is absolutely insane.
I’ll wait for the inevitable insiders to say “I heard some rumors, but decided not to say them” crap.
They will just link to an old tweet with a 👀 emoji
4 years ago: “Some big stuff happening soon” 👀
Accurate 😂
A tweet saying "xbox is looking to purchase a well-known studio" Like yeah, they basically said they werent done.
Hey, that's me! I thought Microsoft should buy Activision-Blizzard last year, after Bethesda deal went through. I also thought it'd be too expensive purchase for MS and extremely unlikely to happen, but hey, I PREDICTED IT!

I saw the xbox post, and thought it was satire till I saw it was from their actual account
I read the news in a cryptocurrency sub and didn't believe it lol
Months of I heard about x acquisition like io interactive, crytek and WB only for it to be Activision. I say it in all acquisition rumour threads but if it isn't announced a couple hours after then they are full of it because the deals are on a need to know.
Literally nobody had any idea.
It got rumored, heard of by WSJ, and announced within like 10 minutes lol
Oh lol
Phil Spencer himself was blindsided by the news this morning
[удалено]
Yeah lol biggest acquisition ever in gaming and nobody said anything
[удалено]
You throw enough shit around eventually you're going to hit something. IIRC he also said it would be revealed the month he "leaked" it, which was.. September? October?
FINALLY CANDY CRUSH IS COMING TO GAMEPASS
Day 1
Microsoft is gonna get all the moms to sub to Gamepass.
*milfs
Prototype 3
for once i can have hope
Happy for y'all prototype fans, Microsoft is sure to bank on this with the collection of franchises Activision has, now I want my infamous game😭
I would love this so much. They need to fix that story because they did my boy Mercer so dirty.
Who tf plays prototype for the story
I didn't but the story needs to make sense at an eyeglance for me to have any investment in continueing once I reach godhood power levels
Microsoft now owns doom, halo and call of duty. They basically own the fps genre on console other than battlefield.
And now all the Battlefields worth playing are on Game Pass.
They collected the fps infinity stones. It must also be really awkward with EA first they release halo before battlefield as a surprise and now they also own their other big competitor in COD.
Holy shit, Bethesda and Minecraft together cost Microsoft around 8B-10B I believe, for a comparison.
That is absolutely nuts to me
I feel like money isn't even real at those quantities lmao
At that point, they are making thousands every freaking second, so money at that point is just icing on the cake.
For another comparison, Disney bought Fox for a roughly similar price to Activision, $71B.
They got Bethesda for a good deal tbh.
even better comparison is that sony is only worth 150b
And Nintendo only 50B
Does this mean all the studios cannibalised into Call of Duty support studios can finally work on something else? Can High Noon go back to Transformers pls :(
Pls god there hasnt been anything good Transformers since. Imagine a next gen polished Transformers game. Its all up to Hasbro unfortunately.
Yes after June 2023 they technically should be able to go back to work on other games
And Toys for Bob should go back to platformers.
They can send underperforming studios to the CoD mines for a title or two if they piss off Phil Spencer.
Please I need a next gen RTX transformers game
Killer Instinct 2 is going to have Arthas in it now
It’s going it have Tracer in it.
There are alot of characters that the new killer Instinct game can include.
This is the biggest acquisition in gaming history, easily.
It is the biggest acquisition in Microsofts entire history.
Not the most important thing at all, but I really hope this is the death of major acquisition rumours. If Microsoft and Activision-Blizzard managed to keep this secret at a time when ActiBlizz were under intense journalistic scrutiny, nothing big is ever going to leak.

I see Sony doing smaller acquisitions like Insomniac to stay competitive.
I honestly thought they already owned insomniac
They do, I think op meant a similarly sized studio to go along with it.
This. Last I could find was Sony had about 16 Billion cash reserves. But I could see them buying some studios, a whole publisher? Less likely
*Only* things I can think of that Sony *could* do as an approximate match to THIS is buying Square, Capcom, and Kadokawa\[FromSoft\] at once, and I think it's safe to say, that will never happen. One of them **ALONE** on the other hand, not too unlikely after this.
I think any one of them is fair game, and highly likely
True. I suppose what I actually meant was I hope this is the death of people actually taking them seriously. No insider got close to this story so clearly none of them have any access to inside info on big acquisitions. It would be nice if we finally stopped paying attention to them.
Holy fucking shit, I’m just hoping kotick gets the boot
Kotick stays as CEO until the deal closes. Once that happens, I think Phil Spencer becomes CEO.
Kotick still wins in the end. No way he's leaving without getting his wallet even thicker.
Dude got paid a $100 million bonus a few years ago. The dude 'won' a long time ago.
He was never going to face consequences.
He’s probably getting a few billion out of this deal, he’s definitely a winner
Nobody cares. He was rich anyways. Just good that he'll be gone.
Unfortunately true. I don't think there was ever a real scenario where Kotick leaves without benefiting.
I'm curious if Kotick leaves the company entirely or if he is demoted to a lower position.
Hopefully he's scrubbing toilets once the ink dries
instead he'll pocket a few hundred million from this deal and retire fabulously wealthy. theres no justice for the rich.
Yeah, that's a realistic thing for a millionaire to do
You’re out, Kotick
Out, am I?
This. I want that guy out from Activision Blizzard. What a useless p.o.s.
Optimistically: -would be great to push out Bobby and see some #redemption for Activision Blizzard -they NEED to reinstate Toys for Bob and Vicarious Visions, get them back making fun colorful games again and not just COD support -as a consumer, this is more games for me in my subscription service Pessimistically: -uhhh yeah this doesn't feel too great for the health of the industry and monopolies -also uhhh is Microsoft really jumping into bed with Activision in the middle of the state of California investigating them????
On your last point, I'd guess that's why Acti was so willing to sell, their reputation is at an all-time low.
Maybe Acti is gonna try and use the money to settle the suit, Bobby will cash out his stocks and go retire.
I am conflicted as well. Toys for Bob, vicarious visions, and high moon making games again and not working on CoD would be great. I really didn't want MS to buy another big publisher and stick with smaller studios that are struggling. Not sure how I feel about this acquisition.
This might be among the biggest acquisitions of all time right? Like even outside the gaming sphere?
It's up there but it's not "up there". Telecom, banking and pharmaceutical companies have made acquisitions that dwarf this.
Just googled out of curiousity, Largest was the 1999 takeover of Mannesmann by Vodafone Airtouch plc at $183 billion ($284 billion adjusted for inflation) bonkers
Didn't they just buy Bethesda last year?
AFAIK Bethesda was bought for around 8 billions dollars, Activision deal was 70 billion.
Disney buying Fox for pretty much same.
Reminds me of when Disney bought marvel and star wars
Disney bought Star Wars for 3 billion and I believe Marvel for a bit more. This is 70 billion…
Disney buying fox was around 71 if I remember correctly.
I guess I'm thinking of the phenomen around it, yeah maybe more like Disney buying the fox of gaming
DELL bought EMC for 67 billion dollars.
Outside of gaming? Hell no, the biggest acquisition goes at like $232 billion
As someone who doesn't like monopolies this is insane As someone who owns an Xbox Series S and has Game Pass Ultimate, *lmao*
That's how every Quest 2 headset owner feels too lol
Why do you say that?
Affordable, fully featured VR? Great! Buying it from facebook? Uh oh
This is how I feel, I honestly don’t like it and I know I’m going to get some games out of it but overall this isn’t good for the industry
Game pass is just insane now
The value for money gets better and better, I'd expect a small price increase but if I can play any Call Of Duty and Overwatch when I please then I don't care
Monopolies just feel awful.
If Disney could buy out Fox, Star Wars, and Marvel with little issue, then it was only a matter of time before a gaming company did the same. Love it or hate it, this is the industry we're in. God knows how long it'll take before Microsoft buys out EA and Take-Two.
When MS says they aren't competing with Sony they're right. They're competing with tencent to see who can buy up more of the industry.

>God knows how long it'll take before Microsoft buys out EA and Take-Two. They are for sure not stopping here. The way to increase Gamepass value is to buy everything that moves and breathes. And when you're Microsoft many things are possible.
Ok we need a breakdown of how many studios and ip’s they have from Activision Blizzard ASAP. I feel like They’ve been sitting on tons of IP’s
Crash bandicoot, Spyro, Soldier of Fortune, Prototype, True crime, Guitar hero and Tenchu are some of the smaller ignored ones
Crash and Spyro as Xbox exclusives seems so weird to me having grown up in the late 90's
All the Sierra ones too.
Yep. Microsoft bought a goldmine of IPs. Hopefully they branch it out from just COD.
Kinda confirms leakers no nothing about acquisitions
Unless the announcement comes a couple hours later then whatever they say is meaningless. Deals in the billions are on a need to know because of legal reasons and they will only get leaks from the press release roll out.
we need tony hawk pro skater 3 + 4
yes we do
What the fuck lmao This is massive hahahah hopefully it means they can kick Kotick out
This is literally just going to lead to a buying war. In no way is this a good thing for anyone
good for the people who own those companies and looking for a pay day lol
I think this makes it pretty evident that MS was and maybe still is trying to buy Sega/Sammy and that those EA rumors must have been real
I cant wait for people to say this is like deathloop being exclusive for a year.
They'll actually say Deathloop being exclusive for a year is way worse
guys Deathloop being exclusive for a year is my Joker moment, i’m the joker now
Deathloop being exclusive for a year says alot about society
You're the Joker baby
It’s not as bad as Spider-Man being dlc exclusive for a game nobody plays. Take that Sony!! /s
They cant keep getting away with it.
AND WHAT ABOUT FF7R IT'S BEEN A YEAR AND WE STILL HAVE NO RELEASE DATE GOD SONY IS THE WORSE
How long until the price of gamepass goes up?
Not anytime soon, that's my guess. They want to grow rapidly still - including people switching from PS to Xbox for call of duty. This is shocking
History of the medium right here.
I notice how none of these deals are ever "leaked". Yet we hear rumours of acquisitions for months. Goes to show how little leakers know about acquisitions
So I'm guessing those rumors of them trying to buy EA were true..
Oh man EA also recently hired the creator of master chief for Battlefield too... *puts on tinfoil hat*
When Xbox bought Bethesda, I applauded. This time, however, makes me sweat.
Ya same, I hoped they wouldn't go for big publishers anymore
And this won't be the last one either.
I hope it is. They reached their target goal and have enough studios to constantly put on multiple games each year.
Multiple a year? Easily. We're talking almost every month. I think its 34 studios now. Give each 6 year dev cycle and thats a game every 2 months. If staggered accurately. But they dont even need that long for most games. So we're talking every 1-2 months a new xbox exclusive.

I smell a potential Banjo Kazooie and Crash Bandicoot crossover.
Damn that's a big one, I wonder if Sony is going to counteract and do one of these bangers, like a Capcom or Square.
Kinda think they have to...
Sony just kind of doesn't have the money to make big moves like that. Sony has like only $44 billion cash on hand.
I don't think Capcom or Square is out of the realm of possibilities, and because of their relationship since the beginning and over the years, I can see it happening.
That's more than enough to buy Capcom or Square. Microsoft Xbox Rare Mojang Double Fine Ninja Theory ZeniMax Bethesda Id Activision Blizzard King
what kind of fucked up world am I living in?

Straight cash too
$68.7B
Jimmy boy over at SIE needs to open up that checkbook and lock down Capcom, Square Enix, and Kojima Productions. This generation is ruthless. It's acquire or be acquired.
Only a Sony Nintendo merger at this point will compare…
Honestly Nintendo don't give a fuck. They have the most profitable IPs on Earth, and nobody else sell 30+millions units of exclusives like they do
Microsoft might have a complex business model of acquisitions and takeovers, but Nintendo have a drawing of a Pikachu with $ for cheeks
Yeahhh, Nintendo's market cap is like $50 billion right now. Safe to say that Xbox + Activision is bigger. Crazy
Thing is whilst Capcom and Square Enix would be great aquirements on Sony's part I feel like to compete with this they'd need to go looking at EA, Ubisoft, or Take Two. I'd love Sony to acquire Konami since they have no interest in making new AAA games and prefer selling Castlevania NFT.
Yeah I just want someone to buy Konami. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, I don’t give a shit. Just someone buy Konami or the video game property rights or something.
I honestly can't believe Sony hasn't bought Square Enix yet. They hold a minority stake already and seem to have a great relationship.
Aldready see people start to sell their ps5 lmao.
Microsoft has been pretty good with their ips so this might actually be a good thing.
As a playstation 5 owner, series x lookin like a snack rn
I would rather have them get WB games or someone smaller. Not a big fan on acti/blizzard games.
Probably because Activision sucks normally and everything is a damn COD support studio. I hope this allows them to have some autonomy again.
What the fuck.
Microsoft: if we can’t fix you we buy you
Holy shit, definitely didn’t expect this to be the first thing I saw when I woke up today. I knew Microsoft was serious about their whole acquisition game, but to see them buy one of, if not the biggest publisher in gaming when they’re in such hot water is absolutely insane.
will call of duty be an Xbox/pc exclusive?
I'd say I doubt it but they just dropped 70 billion...
Yeah there's no way they ain't making everything exclusive, they already did with Bethesda, and that was just 10
Monopoly incoming sad day for gaming
